Wanna fly standby? think again

I think American just joined the others. US air has been doing this for a while now. Just this past weekend we asked to take an earlier flight b/c our flight got in very early. They had plenty of seats but wanterd $50pp. So we waited for our flight.

To be fair they are not charging for standby. Either way this is nothing new.

"Everyone else switching flights on their day of travel will have to pay $50 to get a confirmed seat."

The difference is before they charged you $50 if there was a seat they could confirm. If there were no seats available, you could roll the dice and head to the gate and wait to see if you could get on, no additional charge. Now, it sounds like you have to pay the $50 just to take the chance and there's no guarantee you will get on.
