I don't think most people actually play with their Harry Potter wands.

Really no different than collecting pins or vinylmations.

Yes collecting is understandable but what I didn't understand was the amount of little kids with them. I guess I'm just being cheap and old fashioned.

I don't think they were ever really intended to be toys for little kids. They are just made of resin. However, if people want to spend $30 on them for their little ones, Universal isn't about to complain!!!

They say on them that they are collectors items.Yes, they are expensive, but it was the ONLY thing Dd wanted on our trip, and I wasn't about to say no.She used her own money too.It is no different then people spending a ton of money on Disney pins or the cheap Disney toys that break just as easily.

My DS's wand hasn't been out of the box - he did try to take it out once but I made him put it back in :rotfl2:

I knew my 9 year old would want one, but I never dreamed that my 5 year old would REALLY want one. I agreed to it because they are cool to have, but I was not happy that he wanted to carry it around with him. He was not tall enough to ride FJ (not that I'm sure I'd want him to), he couldn't have any of the sweets (packaged or out of the case) at Honeydukes because of a peanut allergy, but having the wand made him feel special and part of the whole thing, so even though I was worried that he'd break it, it made him happy while there, he did not break it and he now has it displayed (in the case) on his dresser -- he's played with it a few times, but he realizes now that they're just more to have/look at.

The only thing that bothered me was that both kids (even my Gryffindor-loving one) wanted dark wizards' wands -- they just felt 'right' to them. :confused3

My sons saved all their allowance for nearly 8 months before our trip, and they bought 3 wands each. Totally fun trying to fit those suckers in the suitcase for the return trip! They now sit on our sons' respective bookshelves and no one is so much as allowed to breathe on them. They are very much treasured, and each kid plans on buying at least one more on our next trip.

So yeah, not the smartest use of money I am sure, but we are just the sort of rabid HP fans that Universal is very successfully marketing the wands to... :rolleyes1

I think it would be better if the wands had some kind of fiber optics or LED light effects, but that's just the technology geek talking

All souvenirs seem silly to *someone*!

And playing with a wand doesn't (shouldn't) involve the same sort of things as, say, a lightsaber or sword. It's just waving it around and saying things. So unless it's dropped, it's not in danger from acting like it's a wizard's wand. (obviously my son and husband both "play" with theirs)

We used our AP discount so they were under $20, it's just about all they wanted at Universal, so why not?

Now, if DH wanted Lucius's cane/wand*, then we'd have to talk more about it, since that's $100... But it's seriously stinkin' cool.

I'm not one that wants a wand (my weird collecting thing is keychains, some of which I won't use for any key-involving purpose, they are just to own), but if someone MADE me get a wand, it would be Narcissa's. And hers is slightly disturbing. (and when you catch a glimpse of Lucius's and realize that they are similar, you get a little glimpse into their relationship that I'm not sure I wanted!)

*the wand is inside the cane, the cane is very tall, the whole thing is extremely cool, and is kept behind the counters so you have to ask to see it.
