He lived a great life, doing what he loved. RIP, the "most trusted man in America". I find it notable that he passed away so close to the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11's moon walk.

(CBS) The "most trusted man in America" is gone.

Walter Cronkite, who personified television journalism for more than a generation as anchor and managing editor of the "CBS Evening News," has died. CBS vice president Linda Mason says Cronkite died at 7:42 p.m. Friday with his family by his side at his home in New York after a long illness. He was 92.

Known for his steady and straightforward delivery, his trim moustache, and his iconic sign-off line -"That’s the way it is" - Cronkite dominated the television news industry during one of the most volatile periods of American history. He broke the news of the Kennedy assassination, reported extensively on Vietnam and Civil Rights and Watergate, and seemed to be the very embodiment of TV journalism.

Sad news, indeed. I grew up watching Cronkite present the news. He was always the embodiment of the fair and objective news anchor. Once you heard him present the story, you knew you were getting the facts (at least as far as he could ascertain them), with no spin. He never seemed to become a prima donna, more concerned with having his hair just right and getting enough face time on camera. For him, it was the story that was important.

And that's the way it was ...

Those were the days, when news was news and not all about celebrities.

Thanks Walter! God speed!

I had to go to the 3rd page to find this and there are STILL several Michael Jackson threads going strong. Cronkite deserves better from the DIS!!! I grew up watching Walter Cronkite and I trusted him unlike most of the 'news' anchors of today. Walter, you gave it to us straight and we all loved you for it!!! R.I.P.

Do you guys not know who Cronkite is?

When I grew up, we didn't watch anyone else. It didn't matter. He became such a habit that even after he left, we watched Dan Rather because he was "heir apparent". One wonders if he came on the scene today, if he would have captured the country. He arrived back in the time when a grandfatherly tone, (that's what he seemed like to me) was reassuring and dependable. No coifed hair, fancy clothes, he wasn't a "glamor guy". He was Walter Cronkite.

You were the one we knew we could always trust. And the joy you showed when Apollo 11 landed on the moon. I remember watching you live! There is no reason to compare you to anyone else, you were one of a kind. God Speed!
