Walt Warriors

Happy Thursday Warriors!!

The heat down here has FINALLY broken. At least for a few days. I'm sure some more hot spells will be coming in the next few weeks. I was able to get in 6.3 miles yesterday on the way home from work across the tallest bridge in town (that's what we call hills over here............. :)) at a pretty decent pace. My conditioning is still off, but maybe I can get some longer runs & some interval work in. I seem to remember that I DO have 2 1/2's and a full marathon coming up in the next few weeks.

Got a 42 mile bike ride in today. Biggest problem with long rides is the acute onset of large amounts of boredom. And not fueling enough. Or drinking enough. And stark terror when the really big trucks come just a shade too close. Just an obstacle to be overcome, I guess.....

Still trying to shed about 10 pounds (without losing any muscle). I'm 6'1" & I want to get down to about 183ish (Kate, that's lbs, not kg :P). Easier said than done. I figure that's the easiest way to ease the load on the road.....

Ya'll are rockin' the house!! Nice work on the ToT Amanda! :)

Jeremy-always better to be safe than sorry.

Jim-yup, a little cooler this AM. Those big trucks are no fun except for the vacuum they make after passing. Pretty sad when a bridge is considered a hill or mountain. Long-lonely miles don't bother me because I'm crazy.

AFM this week so far....biked 50 miles Tuesday and still hurting from Saturday's fast ride and fall. Wednesday was a 2,000 yard pool swim. Right shoulder was better than before my bike fall. NO, I'm not thinking that I should fall again. :rotfl: Today was a 60 miler with 28mph pulls. These guys I ride with are crazy. Might be heading to San Antonio, Fl. on Sunday for 60 miles of hill riding. Kathy says go but my legs say no. :confused3 Will be 2 weeks from the 70.3 and right now there is a really, really bad red tide bloom in Venice.

Be safe and train wisely u-all.

Hi all.

Things aren't going too well here. Monday ended up being the only day again this week. I did go to my General Practicioner for a checkup and he looked at the knees. He said he felt some grinding in them. He want me to get some x-rays taken and otherwise just take Tylanol. On the plus side, he didn't say anything about me not doing the half marathon next week. Although he mentioned if things progress I may need to look into a different cardio activity.

Oh Jeremy! I'm so sad for you. Take care and feel better!
Thank you Kate and Jim and John! Y'all are amazing!

Last weekend I PRed my half marathon. 2:28:54 which is almost 8 min faster than my prior PR. I probably could have gone faster but I just wanted to beat 2:30. Goofy training is going well. I'm having a bit of right hip pain which might move a tendinitis thing. It didn't hurt when I ran this morning but has been bothering me after. I did another Magic Mile and dropped to 8:42. Pretty happy with that!

Amanda

Happy October 16th!!!

2 Days after the 65th Anniversary of Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier!!

Not much to report. Work yesterday. No workouts as a result. 8.8 miles in a run 3/walk 1 minute routine. Kept a reasonably decent pace, but I definitely do not have "full marathon legs" yet. Going to stretch it out to a run 3:30/walk 1 next time out to see how it affects overall pace. I have my "double secret" goal for the WDW full in January. Hopefully I'll put the work in to get it done.
::yes::

Hopefully, depending on weather and when the contractors working on my house show up in the morning, I 'll get a nice long bike ride in.

Rock on Warriors!

Hi all

Things seem to be improving here but not quickly enough for the race Sunday. I decided to not run the race. It will be my first DNS. That being said, I've decided to turn it around and make lemonade. I'll be volunteering as a course martial at mile 13, the split point for the full and half marathons.

Amanda- huge congratulations on your PR and magic mile! What a fab achievement :) hope you're still smiley and proud.

Jim- I laughed at your lb not kg comment. We're pretty messed up in the UK and seem to randomly flit between imperial and metric for different things! Glad the weather has eased off, I'm not sure how you could overcome long ride boredom safely. I used to listen to audio books during long runs, but would never recommend that where big trucks (or little cars!) could get you!

John- I think you maybe dont see this, so I'm going to point it out.....you are also one of the crazy cycling guys ;) amazing, inspiring and hard working, but yes crazy too!

Jeremy- that's a tough decision to DNS and I'm impressed you're cheering! I know how that feels, but in the long run it will give you time to heal!

Me- gone a little off plan lately. Not stressing though, foot is uncomfortable and very heavy legs so taking a few days out with maybe a swim tomorrow. I actually think that running 2 of my 4 runs each wk slow pace has made me less comfortable on my faster runs than when I ran them all about the same speed! hmmm back to the books for me :)

Good Morning Warriors!!

It was actually BELOW 60 degrees this morning!!! WooHoo!! Unfortunately today is a work day and I am unable to put it to good use.

Not muche lately. I've had a pretty significant flare up of my back pain this week, so it's been pretty easy going for the last few days. Bummer :-(. I DID get in a 47 mile bike ride earlier this week in pretty good fashion, but not much since. Got the W&D coming up soon, so I have to get a decent LR or 2 in beforehand. Going to try tomorrow after work. Here's hoping!

Y'all stay safe!!

Well I ended up volunteer just past the point where the half marathoners split off from the marathoners. The two groups ran together for almost 13 miles before splitting. I ended up working as a crossing guard making sure people didn't cross the street in front of the runners.

Hey Jeremy. Big thumbs up for volunteering. It's always massively appreciated and is a great way to be part of the race (even if it does leave you a little green at times!). How are you feeling? Back running or taking some time to rest?

Jim I have a feeling that your weather's taken a turn for the windy/worse? Saw a few comments about 'Sandy'? I hope she stays well clear of you.

Me nothing major really as had a stomach bug that knocked out our whole family (parents, brother in law and sister, grandad and myself). Good work. So gently back into it yesterday and hoping to be bouncy in time for next 10k on Sunday. Started a new job with University training on Monday and will find out next week if there is any chance I can move an assessment to come out for the Princess. I'm thinking it will be a no though!

Keep at it guys

Kate --- Windy? Here? WhatEVER do you mean? It's only NE winds at about 25-30 knots, with the occasional gust to 50. I actually had intermittent difficulty stay in a lane on the Interstate today. Bleh. All supposed to be gone by Saturday or Sunday.

AFM - I somehow really strained my back a few days ago. Have not done much since. Bleh. Bummer. Not happy. That is all.

Hope y'all are well. Keep up the great efforts!

Happy first day back to EST, the true time.

Hope everyone is mending and enjoying the not so hot and humid weather.:thumbsup2

Last Sunday's 70.3 triathlon turned out to be a 69.1 because of 5' waves aided by 30mph winds. Things were great for the first 15 miles of the biking and then I was horizontal again. 25mph to 0mph sliding on my left side yielded some awesome road rash and wound up shoving my 39+yo wedding band into my ring finger. Finished the other 41 miles of biking and the half marathon bleeding the whole way. Got to medical after finishing and they were ready to send me to the ER for ring cutting and stitching but I convinced the medic to keep on lubing the swollen finger while pulling until it came off. Wound up with a hole in my finger and a hole in my arm right by my elbow plus lots of road-rash. Managed a 2nd for 60-64 age but sure wouldn't have if the swim went on. Doing OK right now. Note to self....stay vertical, except for swim and do not wear ring. :rotfl:

Big news is that I'm in for next year's Ironman Florida. Have 363 days to train. :thumbsup2

Four weeks until the Space Coast Marathon, then I'm off to Texas to watch our 12yo and 10yo DGSs since DS is at WO3 schooling and DDIL will be going out for field duty. Just love the Army. Have to cancel our WDW FW Christmas vacation because of it. Then it's Marathon Weekend for my 3rd Dopey and a 70.3 tri in March.

Kathy has our 40th. anniversary cruise with kids and grand kids all set but seems like the Army will be keeping DS and DDIL from coming along, AGAIN. :(

Everyone be safe and enjoy your training.

John congratulations on the AG reward. Sorry to hear about your spill. Hope you heal up again quickly.

AFM - I'm still taking time off time from running. In general, the knees feel OK in day to day life. I'm also no longer taking pain meds regularly. I got out for a 1 mile walk early last week. It didn't hurt afterward but I felt it afterward.

CONGRATS John! Awesome job!!!

We've had no power for a week and no estimate on when it will be back. We were away for the weekend so I managed 6.54 miles on muddy but beautiful trails. We found a local hotel with a room so we're there for now as it is 49F inside our dark house.

Amanda

Oh my word Amanda! So sorry to read you don't have power. I didn't realise that you live in that area. Any damage to your place? I'm really pleased you have somewhere to stay, that's just too cold to be without heating! Unbelievable that you got sone mileage in- great work! Stay safe and I hope things improve soon.

John- congrats on your epic finish! I'm getting the feeling that it wouldn't be a race experience for you if it didn't involve at least some road rash!!!! Hope you're not too sore. Big huge excited WHOOP that you're signed up for the ironman, cant wait to see your training.

Jeremy- gutted that you're not feeling up to running yet. Time out can be brilliant though in getting yourself healed and raring to go!

Jim- how are you doing? Hope some of those eeks and ouches are passing by now. Meant to ask you actually have the shingles gone?

Me- keeping at it and feeling good. Back into regular exercise before work and it makes such a difference to my sense of well being. Call me crazy, but it works! Getting icy now so that's an exciting extra challenge. Trying to find some events, but apart from the Santa Dash I'm struggling!

Happy Monday Warriors!!

Another fun-filled, busy and totally unproductive fitness weekend has passed us by. I spent the weekend in Gainesville with some old college friends for a fun, FRUSTRATING college football time. It. Was. Freakin '. Hot!

Not sure if anyone here is familiar with Florida Field at The University of Florida, but on a sunny day it is one of the hottest places on the Planet. Old, intoxicated people falling out from the heat everywhere!!

So, as a result, nothing done. My workout schedule has sucked lately, so I'm hoping to have a better month in November.

Kate - Yes, shingles are (theoretically) gone. The Dr. has recommended I get a vaccine, but I have to be clear for a year beforehand.........

John - Nice work on your Tri/Bi!!! Sucks when the weather has an impact on an event, but still great work!!

Amanda - Bummer about the power. Having gotten my "been there, done that" T-shirt, all I can say is that it WILL get better. Hopefully that is the extent of your issues and you do not have any property damage to deal with. Stay Safe!!

AFM - W & D this week, then the Space Coast. I had a "frank" discussion with my lovely, luscious bride regarding the Florida Ironman in 2013, & surprisingly, she was VERY opposed to me doing it. She fears for my back & it's related issues, so out of respect for her I've decided to put it off for at least a year. Bummer. Soooooo, I've got a year to prove to her that it, in fact, will not kill me. I DO need to find some reasonably local sprint & Oly tri's to do after the first of the year. Ahhh. Such is life.

Ya'll be good!!

Jeremy-no meds is GREAT. Take things slowly. I should have learned that lesson a long time ago but after my latest fall on the bike, it has finally made an impact on my old brain.

Amanda-sorry about the no power and stuff but stay a Warrior and things will improve. We were in our motor home when power went out from Hurricane Charley and having air conditioning sure was great.

Kate-that exercise before work can absolutely start the day off with a kick. Watch out for ice patches.

Jim-sounds like the old college days were better than this past weekend. You have got to be very careful with your back. Thinking before acting with everything you do helps prevent injuries most of the time but I've had some instances where a dumb twist set off the back pain.

Sorry you can't make IMFL 2013 but set your sights for 2014. Kathy is going to volunteer next year during our stay up in Panama City. We have a sight at Camper's Inn, had that reservation before registration for the Tri opened, so we're actually closer to the start than some people staying in hotels. If we have a good enough time, I complete :), we will repeat in 2014 and then I will enter the 2015 lottery for Kona. That would be awesome for my 65th birthday year and the trip would be a birthday/retirement trip for Kathy. She WANTS me to complete, big time. :thumbsup2

Went out this AM for 15K and did more jogging than ever before. I want to have a great time at Space Coast so I will be focusing on that event. Called my ortho Dr. when I got home from my training today and I have an appointment tomorrow for my right shoulder. Will talk about improving the movement without replacing the shoulder since I now have to really work on swimming.

Be safe, stay healthy.

Amanda - Sorry to hear about your power problems. I've been without power for a week a couple of times and it's no fun. After the first time, my aunt a couple of doors down installed a generator so I could at least do some things there. I hope and pray things get at least a little bit closer to normal quickly.

JimB - Good to hear the shingles are gone. But sorry to hear about needing to postpone the HIM.

John - Glad to hear that you and Kathy are doing well. Hope the Dr. Appointment went well.

AFM - I went out today and did 2 miles. I walked the mile out on the trail. Started off a little bit stiff but by the time I was ready to turn around I was feeling pretty good. On the return trip I ended up doing run :10/walk 1:00. My cardio was saying you can do more but the knees were saying that's plenty for now. I'm at work right now waiting for a student to finish a test and the knees don't feel too bad and I haven't taken any meds yet. I haven't gone to get x-rays taken like the Dr. wanted. I've been trying to see if any place is cheaper. I have a High Deductible plan that's all I can afford since I pay for it myself. I have some money in my HSA but x-rays that may not show anything would take a big chunk out of it.

Jeremy-just keep in mind that we all walked before we ran. Easy does it. :thumbsup2

Went to ortho and advised him of my 2 falls on the right shoulder that made the pain less, the range of movement greater but the grinding worse. Told him about my tri plans and then said that I needed him to improve the shoulder so I could swim 2.4 miles in the Gulf of Mexico without fear of drowning. He could have told me to fall on the shoulder a couple more times but since that would not financially benefit him-:rotfl:- he is sending me for an MRI and then another visit about going in to clean things up. He is very confident that the movement will be almost good as new and grinding gone.

Happy Thursday Warriors!!

A nice cool week in NE Florida. It's a LOT nicer training outside in this stuff! Looking forward to a relatively cool W & D this weekend...........

I've decided to try and make Tri training the primary focus for a while. If I ever want to do a full IM, I've gotta convince my Lovely Luscious Bride that it's healthy for me, so I'll be working in that direction for a while. I am doing the Florida 70.3 in May, and need to get ahead of the power curve on that anyway.

As such I did a 60 minute bike/ 30 minute run brick yesterday. It was pretty comfortable, and probably the last "big thing" before Saturday night.

Guess that's it for now. Hope everyone has a safe weekend.
