walmart

Oh man. You definitely should have mentioned it to a manager. Accusing you of opening the package was one thing, but calling you a liar is another!!

:confused3

Me thinks she won't last there very long with that kind of attitude :scratchin

I didn't know it was against any rules to open something and look at it, as long as it can be put back in. She must have been some kind of weird control freak, she is lucky it wasn't me she yelled at I tend to go off on rude people like that. Oh well life happens. I would have yelled back or told on her. But I find it very empathetic that you though about her. That was very nice of you. :)

When I worked in retail, if we found an open package, it was considered damaged & had to be marked off as damaged & un-saleable.

Oh my! Did you get her name by any chance?

I would at least write a letter explaining what store you were in, what time and what department. They may be able to figure it out.

Don't you just hate employees that have issues?

I commed you for turning the other cheek. However, it's inappropriate and family or not-- if she cannot conduct herself in a professional matter she needs to find a different line of work. I'd of marched right up to the service desk and demanded a manager. IMO, I am so sick of people who hate their jobs so much they're determined to make everyone else miserable too.

What we have noticed in some stores
Customers open the packages see what it looks like, feels like and then tosses it back on the shelf and takes an unopened package to the register for purchase.

As previous poster said, stores can not sell open packages, they have to damage the item out and take it as a loss.
The worker at Walmart probably is getting grief from the department manager about all the damages/losses in her area and is being told to keep an eye out for customers opening/damaging packages and OP just happened to be in the area with her hands on an open package.

It just happens in retail a lot.

The incident needs to be brought to the attention of management for the purpose of preventing a re-occurrence.

I would go so far as to ask for a discount off of something I bought, in exchange for a false accusation. This puts a quantifiable price tag on varlous employee behaviors and in turn leads to a shift in policies and procedures for the better.

We are talking about walmart here. How many times have you seen packages taped and taped that someone opened and they are still selling at full price. Expecially underware, socks and undershirts. Walmart and target both do it. I have gotten alot of great deals also because of it. I open things sometimes, there is no differance in opening something in the store and looking at it or taking it home deciding it's not right and returning it. I am proud of you for not being ugly as I would have.

Exactly what I was thinking. How many times do we see a sock bag taped back up with clear tape?

As for the OP, I'd have asked for the package back and gone to the service desk and complained to the manager and handed him/her the package.

I can see the frustration, but the Walmart employee accused her of lying and actually went so far as to say "I saw you!". Now, based on the OP, this was simply not true. I've also worked in retail, and a well placed, " Excuse me, but you really aren't supposed to remove things from their packaging" works wonders.

I would have also brought it to the attention of a manager.

They should have an open sample. You can't really buy curtains without seeing and feeling the fabric, that's why they hang them all up at JCPenny's.

You're probably right about the salesperson getting grief for the opened packages.

I also think it's nice that the OP let it go.

Then why does the Clearance section have alot of unpackaged or taped up packages??? Stores are obviously still selling the merchandise albeit at a reduced price....

I would have spoken to manangment but I thought about her family(If she had one-its hard to find work around here)

When we lived in Key Largo, my friend and I went out to lunch one day. When our order came up the waitress brought me my food but gave my friend's sandwich to her fishing guide pal who had ordered the same thing after we did. The other sandwich came up in a few minutes but I knew what happened the incident left me fuming.

My husband knew the restaurant owner and when I pondered calling the guy and letting him know what happened, my husband talked me out of it. He pointed out that it was right before Christmas, one of the waitresses was trying to support her deaf son on her own . . . he talked me out it and I've never regretted not making the call.

I think you did the right thing by behaving the way you did and turning the other cheek.

From what I've seen at my local Wal-Mart's, she'd be promoted in no time! I'm not joking, either.

On the contrary... She is the perfect fit for the retail world... those are the types they love to hire. With an attitude like that no need to ever offer them a raise in pay. :rotfl2:

I agree with all of the above. It was nice that you thought about the lady's family, sometimes we say things without thinking. It was by far inappropiate, but wonderful you were thinking of someone other then yourself.

As far as open packages go, I think stores in different areas probably have different rules. I have worked both at target and at a high end grocery store, neither place were we allowed to sell and open package, period.

My husband is a manager at walmart and they are not allowed either, most of the time they take the loss if it isn't able to be damaged out and not all products are. There are many signs at our local stores asking people to not open packages.

I agree with the I would like to see it out of the package, hence the reason I would go to a place that provided that. I can't stand it when people open packages and just toss the stuff. Not talking about the OP, just in general... since she didn't open the package, no fault there.

I agree with having a sample out for people to see. I worked in retail for many many years, as a teenager and a bit after, and I ALWAYS wondered why the companies didn't just take one, from ONE package, in a popular size, and hang it as an example, and clearance out the rest of the package as a aprtial package. I never did get an acceptable answer to that one. And I was too much of a peon for the high muckety-muck store managers to take notice of
