Walmart to have Christmas layaway!!

The only thing that I can think of is sales. If something is on sale (and the savings is more than $5) and you do not have time to save up the money, layaway would be beneficial.

That's a good point!

Honestly our local kmart is so disorganized I wouldn't trust that they would be able to keep track of the items on layaway...

Layaway is simple.

You bring your items to the back counter, they ring you up for the total. You put down an initial 10% down off of the total. Spend a $100, put $10 down. They take all of your items, bag them and tag them. Then put them into storage areas in the back room. My sister was working for Walmart when they did this 10+ years ago, and I actually got to see it all.
You then come back into the store to make payments every week or two. They give you a set deadline of when you have to pick up your items, like 60 days out. You can pay as little or as much as you want, but have to pay the balance off in full before the end of the terms. Once you pay it off, you get the item.

Unlike a CC, there's no instant satisfaction of walking out of the store with the item. And you don't pay it, you don't get it.

You also don't have to go to the back of the store to make a payment. You can do that at the front of the store with the cashiers. The only other time you go to the back is to pay in full and pick up your items!

I also think layaway is a better option then using credit cards. But I guess each to their own.

Ah, I didn't think about sales... I was viewing it more as a "Let's Go Shopping and Get EVERYTHING We Need" shopping trip instead of trying to do it strategically to save some money.

For us, that isn't an option. The money part is fine, whether we pay a little every couple of weeks or once and be done. The "convenience" for me, is that I know the items are safe and
*not in my house*. I have very snoopy kids, and there's not much space here anyway. I put up the tree on the 16th every year (DH's bday is the 15th, and he grew up in a house that "shared his bday with Christmas. I swore he would always have his birthday while I'm in charge!), so the presents come home, get wrapped, and are under the tree. I have room to hide Santa presents; just not everything for everyone. Haha. I usually go to kmart for this since they offer it year round - makes getting presents for birthdays easier too.

Anyway, just wanted to pass along another reason for layaway besides the "forced saving/spending" side.

Lol! I have a 2yo so I don't have to worry about snooping yet (heck, we can still talk about her presents in front of her if we spell it all), but that is a really, really good idea for hiding presents from the kids.

OT, but my daughter's birthday is Dec. 31 so I'm learning all about separating Christmas & birthday. It pains me to take down the tree before the end of December, but we do so we get birthday pics of her without Christmas decorations all over. We rent out a place for her party (tiny house + big family = bad combo) and they always still have their Christmas decorations up & I can't stand it. It screws with all my awesome party decorations to have a Christmas tree right in the middle of it. I'm going to ask them in advance this year to see if I could take down the decorations and put them away for them -- figure it'll save them a bit of time as well.

One reason people use layaway it to have a place to "keep the gifts hidden".
