Walmart Shoppers Beware

I still don't get how this can happen, since cash back IS NOT AN OPTION when paying with a credit card.

I don't know why cash back is an option, but it is at WalMart. And it has happened to me, too. I got the same story as the OP - "sometimes that happens, no we can't void it or return it, make sure you push 'no' and not between 'no' and '$20' etc etc." Just something to watch for...

I thought you had to put in a PIN in order to get cash back? With a credit card (like Discover) purchase, you're not entering a PIN when you make a purchase --- you sign for it. If the prompt to enter your PIN comes up, you simply hit "cancel" and it will go through as credit.

Additionally, when the prompt comes up asking you if you want cash back (as a previous poster said), the "NO" is right below the $20, so you just have to be careful in what you're doing.

Also checked out the SNOPES link posted above..... looks like the OP is starting nonsense/trying to give Wal Mart a "mark" against them :rolls eyes:

The OP also states she pays her bill in full each month, so she'll only be paying the $7 for the merchandise she purchased and the $20 she got back. She's not out a penny in interest.

Just a "heads up".. This has happened to my DD and her DH three times in the past month at CVS.. They have also had other computer-related problems there as well for several months now and are seriously considering pulling all their prescriptions and having them filled elsewhere..

I wonder why there are so many problems lately? :confused3

I love how there are some people on this board that want to belittle the OP and act as if they are lying. Wow, just wow. The OP went on because they wanted to warn other people about what happened to them. Obviously this is not a secular case as others on this board have said this has happened to them and/or others that they personally know. FYI just cause snopes has stated that these kind of claims are false does not make it so. SNOPES is not a be all know all site, it is just a website that is moderated by other individuals. These people on SNOPES are not geniuses nor are they experts on the subject. So to all the haters on this board that feel the need to call and/or act like people are liars get over yourselves and get a real hobby not one that just googles stuff and uses snopes.

Amazing -- great catch!

Any comments, OP??

I am not the OP, but as I mentioned, it has happened to me and my husband. Walgreens was the only store that cancelled out the transaction for us. Not trying to get attention, just stating the facts. :confused3

...and most folks on the "Budget Board" seem to be (IMHO) a little "too good" for WM, which leaves Target as the sole remaining store (who, BTW, is not without their own list of problems).

I get this attitude from posters on this board, too. :rotfl: It's always, "I rarely shop at Walmart" or "I just ran in for one thing". I mean everyone wants to save money but no need to act like Wally has the plague when it gets so many to that goal.

How does pointing out that the story sounds remarkably like one on Snopes make you a "hater"?

I almost exclusively pay with a credit card (not debit card) and I am NEVER asked if I want cash back, not at Walmart, the grocery store or anywhere else I shop.

This always happens to me at WalMart and ONLY at WalMart. I scan my Discover, press the credit button, the screen pops up for cash back with several amounts to chose from, and a NO box. I always press no - even thought I pressed it when I wound up with 20 buck spitting out of the machine. Happens with self-check or at the cashier line. I agree, it seems strange, but it always always happens.

Honestly I read that link to snopes and guess what? ALL of the entries for that sound the same. Why? Probably because it actually happens. My point of being a hater is that someone felt the "need" to google and/or snopes the issue and then has the gull to state that "hey, the OP is just doing this to get attention cause it sounds like it came off of snopes." Similar things happen to different people all the time. Alot of the people on this thread are posting similar issues happening to them perhaps they are trying to get attention too that or they really like using other people's stories from snopes.

And as much as I don't think the OP should be blaming Walmart for the issue, but the company who runs the machines, I will say that her situation reads different from the Snopes site.

The OP was NOT asked to run her card again and was handed the money. The Snopes article is about the cashier forcing the computer to give cash back and pocketing the money, without telling the customer that there was cashback. The customer found out from the receipt.

Just got back from my Walmart in Eastern Oregon and the person in front of me had the same issue. Said she said no money back and got $20 seems like a common occurance. The cashier said she would let the CM know so she could correct the problem but sounds like it is nation wide at walmart.

I will keep a close watch from now on

Thanks OP for the heads up

Thanks for the heads up :thumbsup2

I confess I almost never look at my receipt if the total sounds correct.:confused3
I will have to pay closer attention.

As to the cash back with a credit card confusion. Is it possible that different companies in different states use different machines? :confused3

No two stores around here ever seem to have the same set up and it can be confusing. Sometimes the enter button is green and sometimes it is not, sometimes there are 3 prompts sometimes 4. I wish there was one standard machine set up used everywhere that might help eliminate some of the confusion.

Although I must admit that when I am visiting the Starbucks inside my local Target for a coffee and the machine asks me if I would like my purchase all on one card it does make me giggle. :rotfl:

Exactly my thoughts when I saw the snopes post. Gee, I guess the many others here who have had similar experiences must all be looking for attention too! :sad2: I doubt that.

Also, I did not get the impression from the OP that she was looking at this as suspicious or some sort of scam, but more that she was frustrated that it happened and even more frustrated at the customer service attitude of 'Yup. Happens all the time! Not our problem. Too bad for you. Buhbye!'

I'd be frustrated at that attitude as well.
