Has anyone stayed at the Boardwalk villas? and if so, is there a walkway to MGM Studios.

There is a walkway. It makes MGM very convenient while staying at the Epcot resorts.

is it a long walk? Do you have to cross the highway? I can't believe that I have been to Disney so many times and have never noticed it! What is it like? We are staying at the Boardwalk villas in June

It's not a long walk and you don't have to cross the highway. It's very well lit, and nice walk. Took me about 15 minutes and I was strolling along, looking at the scenery and the views of the Boardwalk Villas and pool.

The walkway meanders alonside the water on the backside of the Boardwalk.

I believe they just opened it within the last year or so. That may be why you never noticed it before.
Many times it is faster than taking one of the boats.

It's about a 10 minute walk. I did it the last time I stayed there.
I'm not the most active person so I found it more tiring than I want before I spend the day running around the park.

I found it more convienant to walk to the Dolphin to catch the boat there. Shorter boat trip, shorter walk. I would also get off there. I would definitely beat the boat since it would stop at the Yacht/ Beach Club before it would get to BW.

The Boat from BW to MGM goes like this: EPCOT -> Boardwalk -> Yacht Club -> Swan/Dolphin -> MGM

The Boat from MGM to the BW goes like this: MGM -> Swan/Dolphin -> Yacht/Beach Club -> BoardWalk -> EPCOT


The path follows a canal and goes under a bridge which is the highway, so no danger of being run over.

The walk to Epcot is shorter, I am told, but the boat from BW to Epcot is direct with no stops, so I didn't bother to walk to EPCOT.

About a year-and-a-half ago, a DIS poster (Caskbill) used his handheld GPS to measure the lengths of some interesting paths at WDW. He measured the distance from MGM to BWV as 0.66 miles. The following thread has the detailed breakdown:

He also measured the path from BWV to the EPCOT Interational Gateway entrance. It is 0.36 miles. 0.36 miles may or may not sound like a lot, but it's really a pretty easy walk (about 10 minutes), especially compared to the amount of walking that you'll probably do once you get into the parks. (For another point of reference, it is exactly one mile around the World Showcase Lagoon!)
