Walking on with a pillow/blanket

My opinion may not be what you're looking for. Pay the money to check a bag and stuff that thing to the brim. You have enough stress and a WDW is already expensive that the $50 you would pay to check the bag round trip is a drop in the bucket and makes your life easier so much easier.

Every person boarding the plan is allowed a carry-on bag and a personal item. You can each have a carry-on, a purse as your personal item, and the pillow/blanket as his. Or did I miscounted the total number of items?

I would suggest taking as large a carry on bag as is permitted. That way, you can put the blanket as well as any other things your ds may possibly need in it. I sure wouldn't want the stress of worrying about a checked bag being misdirected with the things he needs in it!!! Murphy's Law says that's what will happen.
Just pack the weighted blanket and possibly the pillow in a carry on and then remove them once you're seated. Pack them up when you get off the plane.

do not know if this could be a problem for your son but he will not be able to carry any of the items thru the TSA check point. they will have to go thru the scanner, as in disappearing from sight. would prepare him for this as even special needs will not change this no matter how upset he gets. could cost you more time at the scanner

Could you get a vacuum seal bag (or travel bag that you roll up) to pack them in so you could put them in a carry on? It pulls the air out so it makes it less bulky to pack. Would they fit in a back pack? or bag that would fit under the seat? if so, then it could be his personal item. I almost wonder if both items wouldn't count as a medical requirement thus making it not count at all towards your items. Have you asked this over on the Disabilities boards? They may be able to answer that too.

Yes that's an option too...it would be easier, but does cost. Plus if the bag gets lost my son isn't going to be happy and I'm going to be miserable. Although the odds of that are slim and we survived the gamble once before. Trying to consider everything.
You can bring his important things with you onboard in a carry-on suitcase and back non-essentials to check. Or, you can take a backpack as a personal bag. You can back the weighted blanket in one of your carry-ons and pack clothes into one of the backpacks.

If you are going to put them above, then that is his carryon. What is in the bag you intended as his carryon? Can those items be condensed and become his personal item that goes under the seat? It is truly unfair and uncool when people put two bags up above for one person.

We flew Southwest summer 2013 and my daughter carried on her pillow in addition to her carry-on bag without any problems. I had a zippered pillow cover she used (to keep her pillow/regular case clean) and she had her pillow and a stuffed animal inside the zippered cover. It seems like she might have even stuffed something else in there. They didn't even question it and she mainly held it the whole trip. On the flight home though we flew American Airlines and the flight attendant said she had to put it either under the seat or in the overhead during landing, but it really wasn't a problem.

I don't think they'll fit in a backpack or under the seat. They'd need to go into the overhead bin. I'd considered them being medical equipment....I'd think the blanket could count but the pillow is just a regular pillow...it's just HIS pillow. I don't know. I may check over on disabilities. Thanks for the suggestion.
You should still try. There isn't any apparent reason the pillow and blankets won't condense, enough to allow additional items. What are you planning to put in the carry on luggage?

My 7 year old son has ADHD and is on the autism spectrum. He has some issues sleeping....he needs a weighted therapy blanket (smaller than a twin size and 6 lbs), a baby blanket, a small stuffed animal, and a pillow. His pillow....another won't do. I've only ever traveled with him by plane once and it was on southwest so I packed these things in their own bag and it was fine. But this time we are on delta and I'm trying not to pay to check two bags between us. The baby blanket and stuffed animal are no problem to pack, but the pillow and weighted blanket are quite big. A friend that travels a lot said he has seen kids carrying a pillow/blanket on as a personal item in addition to a carry on bag, does anyone know anything about that? I'm still a bit iffy on that as I know the blanket especially will get heavy and a pain to carry. I may try to just carry on a purse for me, then his carry on bag, and a bag with his pillow and blanket. Any other ideas?

Everything you plan to carry on must fit into the maximum allowed carry-on when you go through security. After you get through, you can rearrange things as you like. You'll each be able to have two personal items to bring on board. You could put his things in a wheeled bag and store that in the overhead. I'm pretty sure you could fit both his blanket and a pillow in the roller bags. I manage to pack 4 days worth of clothes in mine!

I also like having a blanket and pillow for longer flights. I stuff those into my backpack and just pull them out immediately prior to boarding. I've never had the airline try to count those as personal items.

No worse than those that nicely fold up their coats and stash them above them. Or those that manage to bring an oversize bag on board with them and smash that into the overhead. Yeah, it's only 'one' bag, but it takes up the space of two and sometimes makes it impossible to fit anything else in the bin.
I seldom put anything in the overhead bin. If you're further back in the plane, it's seldom an issue.
