Traveling solo, in good health/shape. Looks like I probably can walk to Animal Kingdom and take buses from there. Right?

Tell me that I'll really love Silver Lake versus POP Century. I've opted for the space, quiet, kitchen, etc. but I'm giving up the transportation and won't have a car. I enjoy hanging out a resort too, gym, watching movies, etc.

Also, I understand there's a Winn-Dixie close enough walk to pick up supplies. Feedback?

Thanks.

I wouldn't think you could walk from Silver Lake to Animal Kingdom. Lack of sidewalks would be the biggest hindrance. And at the end of the day or in the dark--no way. While Silver Lake adjoins Disney proprety you can't just hop the fence and start walking. Both Sherberth road and the road AK sits on sees a lot of FAST moving traffic. (And we're tourists with only one thought in mind--gotta get to Disney gotta get to Disney gotta get to Disney ;) )

I don't know exactly how far it is to AK from Silver Lake, but I think it is very close.

We're going Christmas week and staying at Silver Lake, so if you'll be there the same time, we could probably give you ride over. I think the shuttles from Silver Lake are a little pricey, say around $9 or so.

Pchpie, you are such an adventurous soul! I remember your trip from this summer, and you took the public transportation all around Orlando and did well. I think it's possible that someone may be around that could help you there during your stay. I remember this summer when we were at Ft. Wilderness, there was a British man in the little store there buying groceries. I started to ask him if I could take him to the grocery store as he was buying quite a few items. I decided not to though, as he didn't know me, and might not trust a stranger.

Let me know if I can help you during that time.

Silver Lake is very close to WDW property, but Sherberth road is definitely NOT a walking road.

I drive on there occassionally and it is a relatively windy road, used quite a bit by cast members. As you know, locals and cast members are not known for slow, safe driving.

As Belle stated, Sherberth then empties out onto the Osceola Parkway. Another busy road with lots of busses, even on that end of it.

Once you got to the Parkway, you'd have to cross the street, then walk down towards the parking booths for AK. You can't "cut through" as it is all fenced and I doubt they'd like anyone backstage there. :)

thanks and hey to sweetmaxine and spiceycat.

silver lake one bedroom has amenities that i really want, tv with vcr for movies, screened porch, full kitchen, washer/dryer, small exercise facility with free weights, close to gocery (winn dixie closest i believe...for walking to, taking cab back with my bottled water for coffee, my soft drinks, and other good stuff that i need. may even catch 192 bus west to publix at summer bay and then take cab back) and the rate of $232 beats my $49+tax AP rate at POP. also, i'm headed to bcv for five more days after t this 12/12-12/19 week to have a nice on-site resort experience.

taking mears to/from resort, cab as needed to/from grocery stores and to bcv on 12/19. i enjoyed my adventure with the bus system last summer, but it takes more time than i really want to spend this time. will use shuttle, maybe hitch a ride with a friend i've yet to meet, maybe taxi....i figure i've got $100+ to spend here over the best rate at POP for the week.

and, i really like a bit of privacy and peace and quiet. so i think this wiill be a good fit.

traveling alone again...wish i had a friend or two along, but i'll do lots of people wataching. and, i get up and retire much earlier than normal folk, so things work out the way they're supposed to. will spend at least one day at the multiplex at dtd....i love that place (movies are my thing).

Please don't try to walk the Sherberth Rd....there is one section with no shoulder and a very deep drainage ditch on 1 side and a not so deep but still not walkable ditch on the other side!!

i won't try to walk to disney. thanks to all for your tips and concern.

with the $$ you've saved on lodgings, and the savings from not paying for mears and cabs, you can probably get a rental car for your whole stay (assuming you can drive).

then you can come and go at will. factor in the $8/day for parking while you're not lodging on disney property and you will probably still come out ahead.

check out www.mousesavers.com for codes to get the best deal. example: i've got a full sized car from budget for 9 days in january for $225, all taxes/fees included. could have had a smaller car for less $$.

good luck
