Walking for my Dream (Comments welcomed)

I got in a good 50 minute workout on the TM yesterday plus weights. That feels good. Then I talked my DH into going for a walk in the evening. My pace at the gym is 4.0 to 4.3. My pace with DH is 2.3 to 3.5. But my garmin kept saying "Speed up"...Well yeah! But DH says his hips won't move that fast. I didn't want to turn him off cardio walking (although I don't think that pace is cardio in the least) so mainly I just enjoyed the walk. And by the end he was up to 3.8. I figure eventually we will unglue those hips and get him striding better.
I'm working nights tonight.
Have a great weekend!

Hey Carole--WTG for getting your DH out for a walk.....as he walks more he will get faster. You did the right thing about not pushing him too hard and turning him off to walking. I know too many people who started running/walking and started out too fast or doing too much and got injured or just stopped altogether. It is very important to start small and work up to moving faster. I think it is great that he is getting out there!

And it sounds like your workouts have been great too....Keep up the good work!

Hi Carole, Its great that you and hubby are walking together! When my dh and I walk, I'm the slowpoke. Now that we have more daylight, we can get out there after work. Enjoy your week! Denise

Denise I'm loving the extra light. I got out tonight with DH for another walk after getting up from nights. He is getting shin splints because he leans forward so we just ambled along. Enjoyable though. I'm impressed with him because thats three walks in three days and its not golf season!

Laurie you are so right. I'm getting cocky because I've been walking fast since October and his pace seems so slow. However I really want DH to enjoy this...I enjoy his company. So I've decided not to treat our walks like a cardio walk workout. Just an enjoyable walk. I'll let him set the pace for now. I'll do my cardio on my own time. Though I can't resist wearing the Garmin....its my new toy. Oh and my dog thinks its in heaven getting extra walks outside. Now if only she didn't want to sniff everything!

Tomorrow is a gym day with DD for me and I see my personal trainer.

Hi Carole,

I think that's great that you and your DH are going for walks together.:goodvibes I know when my DH and I used to walk together, it made time go by faster because we would talk about everything. Before we knew it, the walk was over!:thumbsup2

Hope you have a great Monday!:cool1:

Today I got a brand new workout from my personal trainer. She added pushups this time.:scared1: I haven't done pushups since I was in highschool phys ed. Yikes! Other than that it was a good TM and the rest of the workout was fine. And DH and I got out for a walk as well. He is really suffering from his shin splints though. I've never had them and can't even offer a solution except not to lean forward. Are there good stretches for them?

Nights tomorrow and Wed no workout again until Friday realistically. Then I'm off nights for three weeks.:yay:

Well I’m back.

Hope all of you had a good weekend. Mark and I left NH last Weds. We had a fine flight – direct to Orlando and arrived by 10 am. We were in Epcot/Mexico by 12:30 having nachos and margaritas. A great way to start the vacation. We walked around a bit but went back to the hotel to freshen up and head over to MGM for some people watching in the evening.

Thursday morning. 6:30 am I am excited. I want to go out and walk outside rather than on the TM. We get up, get dressed and out the door by 7am. 1x around the BW/BC area is 1 mile from where we started near the Swan Bridge. We start slow but speed up and I think that did me in. I really need to warm up more and didn’t. On the 2nd time around I decided to try to run a little – nope – didn’t do too much better doing that either.
3rd time around took us 12 minutes. First time 10 min. 2nd 9 min . While the times were good I was greatly disappointed in my inability to run.

2nd day, another glorious day. Sun was almost up, we’re encouraged again. My shins hurt so we won’t be doing any running and we will warm up a LOT. I don’t remember the times but they weren’t too bad. Over the crest we see the sunrise, then 3 Hot Air Balloons and then as we round the corner what do we see at the BC a Bald Eagle perched on the very first Villa. Did we have our camera with us during ANY of these things NO!!

By afternoon, my legs were killing me. Off to the pool to spend some quality time in the spa. Which helped a lot. I had been in a car accident years ago and now and then the outer side of my knee hurts and shoots up my thigh. I’m going for a massage tonight and have her help me on that.

Saturday morning, we had an appt at the Spa for hands and feet so we took the morning off of walking but I was looking at the circle longingly… I even walked down to the ice machine and made and ice pack for my leg which did help a lot. Sunday we again took the morning off but still walked a lot throughout the day between the parks. Since we were flying home on Monday, around 1PM we stayed around the EPCOT resorts for the brief time left. Mark was not feeling well enough(another issue) to scoot over to MGM so we did a bit of shopping, breakfast and waiting for the limo to pick us up.

All in all it was a great vacation but a big disappointment in my legs. I know I’m 52 but I really thought I would be better than this by now. I’m going to stick with my current routine, ½ hr on the ellip, ½ hr on the tm and build muscle, lose weight then when the streets are clear work on endurance.

I did check out that ½ marathon route and it is long but I’m determined to do it! I just know that I have a LOT more work to do and so does the rest of my team.

Good to have you back. Though I'm sure you'de rather still be at Disney. I understand how excited you could be to walk/run outside. Don't be too hard on your legs though. My personal trainer said it will be like starting over when I start walking outside...that its a whole nother ballgame. So I guess its a good thing for me that my DH is such a slow walker so I can break in the outside. At the Running Room they told me to elevate the TM a bit to get prepared for the outside.
When you find out what helps your shin splints can you let me know. I really hope they settle down quickly for you. I understand its quite painful.
BTw I think I'm getting my hill climbing started. LOL. I'm moving my sewing room from the basement rec room to a 2nd floor empty bedroom. I had no idea I had this much STUFF. And I have thrown away bags of papers. I'm realizing I had a bit of a firetrap happening downstairs. I am pleased with how my new sewing room is coming. I was sick of being in the basement, lightwise.
Good to hear your vacation was good even with shin splints, and DH not feeling well. I am getting pretty excited about going and its still almost 2 months to go!

Mom (wdw4us) we can so do this it is now or never..hehehe plus it is the best place on earth. I am excited to run outside specially now that it is getting warm out. Tomorrow is a big day at the gym. I don't know how well I will do after scrubbing my kitchen floor on my hands and knees.

CarloeD thanks for the advice about how different it is to do the run outsdie then in. And you sew too. My mom has been teaching me. I will have to post my quilt when its done. :)

Happy marathoning. :)

I wonder if you are close to my daughters age. She is 24. She has agreed to do a Disney Marathon with me in 2009 and she is training with me for that. We go to the gym about for times a week together. Its been great!
BTW I'de love to see a picture of your quilt. I've been teaching my DS's fiancee how to quilt. She has completed a baby quilt for a friend out of my scraps. Turned out very well.

Good Saturday morning! Well I worked only on the treadmill today 65 minutes so I can increase my endurance. I did 4 miles. It was not as bad as I thought it would be. I guess for the days I'm on the treadmill I'll continue to do 4 miles until I get used to that and then I'll go up to 5. I plan on doing the treadmill every other day and then on my "off" days doing the ellip. Finally when I'm doing better on the treadmill I hope to start to decrease my time but keep the mileage up there.

I noticed my chubbies on my waist have gone done and at weigh in on Friday I had not gained anything from my Disney Vacation!!! When I went to get a massage on Tuesday she said she noticed a big difference in my legs - in just a month. That was more of a surprise than anything. I guess those morning trips around the BW/BC area were a great way to prevent the extra 5-7 lbs I usually come home with.

Trying to stay positive and keep that goal in mind. The DONALD.

Take care.

I've been noticing some differences too. Not in weight but how my clothes fit. Everything seems to tuck in easier than before.

Great job on doing 4 miles in 65 minutes!

I finally got to the gym and did 40 minutes on the TM and a weight workout. The night shifts are over for me for a bit so I'll be able to get to the gym more often again.

I hope when I come back from Disney in May I can say I didn't gain weight!!!!

I bet you do. I think that our metabolism is such that we can do a bit more "fancy" eating for that short time, continue our workouts but not gain weight.

This week I have quilt retreat from Thursday till Sunday. I plan on working out in the morning on Thursday but not sure about Friday and Saturday. We are going to to the western part of the state and a friend went to check it out a couple of weeks ago and said the road to the facility is dirt/mud so I don't think I'll get much walking done. This is a place the specialies in religious get togethers so I don't think they will have any exercise machines excepts a flight of stairs!

The way it's going I may not make my 1000 min of the March Challenge but I'm sure gonna try.

Glad your back to days. Keep at it.

HI Carole,

Sorry for being MIA this week, I have been away at a conference.

Sounds like you are still doing a great job! Sorry to hear about your DH's shin splints. When I was younger and playing basketball in HS, I used to get shin splints every year. The athletic trainer used to fill up paper dixie cups with water and freeze them. He used to give me on of those after practice/games. He would tear of the top of the cup so the ice would stick out a little, and he would have me rub the ice up and down my shins. Let me tell you, it worked wonders!!!

Also, does you DH use older shoes for walking? Shoes lose their cushion over time, and if you use old shoes, it often can lead to shin splints.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Hi, Carole! Sorry I haven't been here in a while -- I've been missing my WISH friends. Congratulations on keeping up with your walking. It must be such a relief to know you can spend that time on the TM and feel good afterwards!

keep up the great work! :goodvibes:

Hi Laurie,Cam and Denise,
I've been a little MIA this week too. Night shifts do that to me. Plus my resolve to exercise goes out the window. I just never seemed to have the energy when I'm switching back to days for a few days. Then I see the light.
Today I planned on getting to the gym but that never happened. I did get out with DH for a half hour walk. I do intend to get to the gym tomorrow.

Laurie I think you raise a really good point about shoes. I can't remember when he bought his runners but I'm betting they are really old. And they probably weren't great ones to begin with. I'll talk to him about new shoes.
Thanks. I don't want him giving up due to shin splints. Also the ice treatment.

Denise enjoy your retreat. I've been to two retreats and love them. There is something inspiring being totally immersed in a quilting retreat with no home distractions.

Cam its great to see you back. I missed you.

Hey Carole--glad to hear you got out for a walk, despite not being able to get to the gym.

No problem about the tips for shins splints...I used to get them all the time growing up and I HATED them!!! I hope your DH is feeling better soon. :wizard:

Yeah!! I got to the gym today. I found the TM harder than usual. Guess that was being away from it. I also did weights and abds. I'm doing push ups now too. Just 40 so far. And I got out for a walk with DH tonight. And he says his runners are 3 years old. Now to convince him to spend the money on a good pair. If it was his bike that needed equipment the money wouldn't matter.:lmao: He's funny that way.

Yeah, you made it! Some days it's so hard to get in a few min of exercise, we're so pooped.

I was going great guns on my TM last night spilled water from my bottle on the electrical portion of it, whole thing went wierd on me and brought the height up to a level 10. Well there is no way I can sustain a level 10 for 3 more miles so I shut it down and hoped I didn't ruin a $1000 TM. Went on the ellip for the remainder of my 1 hour workout. After it dried, it worked fine again. Whew!

Tonight I have Bee so it'll be a quckie workout just to bring up my time on the Challenge. Boy that challenge gets me going. Nothing like a goal to move your butt.

Have a good day everyone. Carole, tell the hub he'll be pain free with a new set of "tires" - he may pay for that!

denise

Hi Carole, Congrats on adding push-ups to your workout! 40 is great! I can't even tell you when I last did a push-up. You've motivated me to give them a try. I'll be moaning and groaning that my upper body muscles hurt. LOL! Have a good tomorrow! Denise
