Walking around FW

We are staying at the Cabins for 10 nights Jan 4th-15th. There are 5 of us me DH and 3 teenage DD's. We are all fit and healthy and enjoy walking. We have a 6 day park hopper pass and also intend going to Universal and Cape Canaveral. We will have a car for first 4 days to travel off site but once into park hopper mode we are happy to walk and catch buses. We have free DDP from the 8th and have made some ADR's.

I wanted to know peoples experiences with walking both as a recreation and in getting to transportation. If we decided to take a walk to the Meadows and on to the settlement and Marina how long will it take?

Can you walk to the Wilderness Lodge? How long would it take?

Also walking from bus stops at night. Is it generally safe and easy to get around?

We like a leisurely to moderate pace all round and would I'd like to hear any experiences or advice from walkers out there.

The cabins tend to be a bit far away from the Meadows and Marina.... I would say at least good 15-20 minutes. Walking at night is kinda spooky in places, but I have never had problems. If you like a good hike, walk the trail by the horse barns to the Wilderness lodge, I'd wear swim suits and check out the pool when you get there! oh thats supposed to be secret.... I would say 45 minutes walking! Have fun!

The path to WL is about a mile but its a nice walk, even for a fat guy like me.

January is perfect walking weather. If you get tired, hop on a bus or boat.

And looping on foot is fantastic! We opted not to get the golf cart when we were there since we like a good walk too. We loved walking around and looking at all the Halloween decorations that were out when we were there. And looping on foot gave us a chance to really stop and talk with all the campers sitting outside. Part of the reason I loved our visit!

From the 2100 loop to the Settlement is about .95 of a mile. To the Outpost is about the same. To the Meadows was 1/2 a mile. All are on blacktop paths. We have stayed in the cabins yearly since 2003 and have never rented a golf cart but have used the buses which run about every 10 minuets or walked.
The cabins all have sensor lights on them so that walking at night is not only safe but very easy to see, ( we have never needed a flash light).
Jan is a great time to go to the Fort, that's when we always go. Just don't forget a coat or windbreaker with sweatshirts because it can get chilly at night.

Isn't it funny how times have changed. When I had younger skin (back in the day) it was nothing to walk for a mile or two, in fact, every single human on this planet didn't have a car and walking was part of getting around. Now days we jump inna car to go to the neighbors.
We walk our fur baby everyday for 45 minutes to a hour and never even think about.
If you enjoy walking, you'll be fine at the Fort, and if you do get tired, there are bus stops everywhere, just sit and wait,

I hear you. As a kid I walked everywhere to school, sporting activities my friends places. Now I drive my kids everywhere. All their activities are out of our area so I have to drive them and I hate driving. They go to school out of area as well so their friends are all over, though they mostly catch a bus to school. My eldest catches a train to university. She'll either drive or walk to the station depending on the weather. We are all happy to walk and take public transport when we go on excursions so I know we will be fine at FW walking and catching the buses.

I read about hiring golf carts and people who drive to the Parks. I know this suits some people especially those with mobility issues but for us walking and catching the buses means not having to drive and the chance to stop and smell the pine needles.

I'm looking forward to it.

I was speaking to one of the boat captains last week about the WL trail. He said it was closed or is being closed. He said they were possibly going to put a DVC between FW and WL on the lake.
