walkie-talkies?

Can you use walkie-talkies in disney? I thought there might be times when my husband might be on a ride with one of our children and I might be on a different ride with the other. I thought then walkie talkies might be useful. What do experienced people think?

I've seen tons of families use them in the park. I'm just not sure how many frequencies there are. You might be listening to someone else's conversation sometimes.

my brother brought walkie talkies once all we ever heard were other families. He never was able to talk to his own kids. Cell phones work best.

if you get the one's with the sub channels you should be fine, we used are set the weeks surrounding 4th of july when it was VERY busy and never heard any other conversations, because they had the 38 sub channels

Personally I find the walkie-talkies annoying. If you want to split from you group, why not just pick a meeting area at a certain time.

I think we're taking walkie's with us. My dad got my sister and I some of those mickey ones a few years ago....He thinks that it's a great time to use them...but I think they're kinda hard to tote around. He'll just have to call me on my cellphone.

We took Walkie Talkies with us in May 2004. DH bought ones that have lots of different frequencies so we didn't have any trouble at all hearing other people. They worked great and I wouldn't go without them. DH and I use them in the mall and even Target. You wouldn't believe how much time we save because we no longer have to LOOK and LOOK for each other. We have ones that are rechargeable and they hold their charge well. We also bought cases with a neck strap (lanyard type) and they are always handy. I would highly recommend them.

Cell phones are a great way to go if you aren't paying long distance rates. The cell service is great in all areas of the park. When we tried to use the walkie talkies we only had 14 channels and we heard many other people and started tuning out and missed calls meant for us.

We used walkie-talkies with great success on our last trip. We had one instance where they saved us many hours of searching for part of our group. I had my two boys and one of our friend’s sons and we were going to Disney Quest. My wife and our friends were taking the younger kids to Magic Kingdom. Well my friend’s son didn’t have his ticket, it was with his mother who had just gotten on the bus for MK. Walkie-talkies to the rescue. I was able to call my wife and they got off at the next stop and we caught up with then ten minutes later. If you have them, take em!

We have used them in the parks and elsewhere. The only problem with walkie talkies or cell phones is being able to hear them. I noticed If didn't have either ones up close to my ear I didn't hear them call me or ring which ever the case. In other words if they were clipped to my pants I didn't hear it. The noise level at the park drowns out the call. One thing I did tell the others when using the walking talkies was to make sure they call out my name very loudly before speaking. That way it gets my attention.

That's why we use cell phones...we keep it on viberate.

Viberate only works if the phone is touching your body. Mine is in the cell phone holder on my purse. I would lose it on a ride if I had it clipped to me.

Because WDW can equal long lines/crowds/"Oh look, there's [insert favorite character] and we've been waiting to meet him/her!!"...MANY reasons for unexpected delays!

Understand all that but I still have survivied many trips to Disney w/o the need for the walkie talkies. Nothing ruins the mood of Pirates more then the guy behind you walkie talkie going off. "Hey Fred, we are going to go to the bathroom before we meet you, Jr. needs to go poop."

One thing I found, Try not to use the polyphonic ring tones while in the park. Just use one of the "classic" ring tones that come with the phone. They're usually louder, and don't "mix" with the background noise and music of the parks.

Cell service definately depends on the carrier. Nextel is 100%, inside and outside, all the rides, everywhere. I don't think nextel has a single dead spot on property ( WDW uses Nextel for walkie-talkies now ). US Cellular works decently, just not inside any of the rides. It was always in roaming ( before I switched to nextel), but it always worked. I've heard the same thing for Verison, it works, just not inside some of the rides.
