Just trying to decide if we need to buy walkie talkies... My family has 2 cell phones with FREE mobile to mobile. Should we just stick with the cell phones? or buy walkie talkies?

I would stick with cell phones. I have heard that there are so many people on the walkie talkies you can't find a free channel!!

I am taking both.:wave2:

Cell Phones for sure, think if someone has to go back to the room as well, Walkies won't work there, sometimes you can't find an open channel as the previous poster stated, they are hard to hear sometimes, etc. Stick with the cells. Make sure both parties know how to check messages (incase someone calls while on ride, etc and they don't hear the phone).

Definitely the Cell! We used walkie talkies years ago and it could be difficult to find free channel, you heard other's conversations, and the range is only so far. Cells are perfect for the entire World as mentioned (not just 2-5 miles), no one can hear your conversation, you are able to get the one person you are trying to reach much easier.

Cell phones. We bought expensive walkie-talkies last year just for the trip and I think I was able to hear my husband on them twice. Never could get them to pick up right but heard thousands of other conversations on them. Meanwhile, I watched everyone else talking and making plans on their cell phones while I sat just trying to beep my DH somewhere in the park.

If you have walkies, bring them, if you have free time one day sit somewhere and "tune" into other's conversations...lol! Oh the things you will hear... yikes! We had our's on our recent cruise and had fun "playing" on the walkies... I know I know... not nice, but someone has to have some fun. :bounce:

We had a great time "talking" with a group of drunk elderly ladies one night on them. They thought we were their other drunk friend who was looking for them somewhere on the LIDO deck...lol!

Another vote for Cell Phones. We have used ours on the last few trips and it has been great.

Although, you do need to check with your service to make sure that the Mobile to Mobile is still free if you are out of your calling area. There was a previous post I read here that said because they were out of their home area, the mobile to mobile were charged just like every other call (meaning they lost minutes for those and they went over their minute plan). We have never had this problem, but apparantly someone did. So be safe and check before you go so you won't be surprised when you come home.

Good luck.

i say cell phones, we have done both before and the cell phones are by far the way to go. i do have to say that when we went in march and stayed at POR they didn't work in the rooms, we had to step outside. other than that they are great.

Does anyone know how the Sprint service is around the world? Just wondering if the signal is always good or not?

thanks,
Melissa

Use the cell phones.

Some walkie talkies require a FRS/GMS license which is not to hard to obtain, but it will cost you $75. Our walkie talkie had a 2 mile radius, which didn't work for me when I tried to reach my wife(she was at MK-Pooh and I was at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad). Our walkie talkies had 22 channels and 29 sub channels, so we were able to get some channels that didn't have much chatter.

Like others have said, check with you cell phone provider on costs etc..., but I'm using cell phones on our next trip.

Walkie Talkies worked great. IT's fun to hear others talk, but they did work and we did not buy the most expensive ones. We got the audiovox ones that had a 5 mile radius. If you get them, make sure you get the ones with subchannels. But make sure you keep them in sight as my DW lost hers towards the end of our trip. Well, I guess we will have to get some more.

Last year I had Sprint PCS and had no problems with the signal in WDW. This year I used T-Mobile and it had little to no usable signal. I could get a few bars when I was outside of the parks. My DW has cingular, she had a weak signal at POFQ and a normal signal in the parks. YMMV

definitly cell phones.

last trip we used our cell phones and did not have any problems anywhere in WDW. this trip everyone has their own phones so keeping in touch will not be a problem.

we have verizon

What kind of signal has anyone gotten with Verizon? We'll be at CS in June.

the signal we recieved from verizon was always strong ands clear. never had a problem the entire trip

We are taking our cell phones. We have mobile to mobile, no LD or roaming so it just makes sense.
