Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

I did my 2-mile very fast walk today and I think some of it was actually proper (or close to it) race walk technique. I get to a point where in order to walk faster, I have to do a little hip thrust movement and push off with my back leg. I'm pretty good with it, except my arms get tired before my legs do because I hold them a little higher than when i just walk. I'll have to give Dave a demo and he can critique me. (Just don't let Erica know I'm gonna do a hip thrust for you!)

Be still my heart:love:

Jeanne of course I'd be glad to give you any advice I can. One thing you might want to practice is that the arm swing is more to the back for walking than for running. Since your stride is more in back for walking. Get a rythum going just like with running where your arms and hips are working together but opposite so they counter balance.

The stride for walking comes from the butt and hips that's why racewalkers have to best butt definition. I noticed that after about 6 months of training that my glute muscles were getting larger and more defined. Since the stride builds your core muscles, ABs, Glutes and hams more than running you might notice an increase in definition from your calves to your waist.

It was raining this morning so my resident pretty princess refused to get up. I had to workout on my own. So I went to the gym and did 3 miles worth of intervals on the treadmill. Most at 15 mpm but the quarters at 10 mpm pace.

Then I played in the pool for a bit and had a soak and stretching in the hot tub. No water jet massage this time except for foot bottoms. That is a good prevention for PF which is caused by tightness on the tendons on your foot bottoms.

I hope Kathy likes us so she will come back and play with us.:cloud9:

Jean we are also arriving at MCO at about 10AM. I count from how long till I am on holidays which is 4:30 on Oct 24th....lol

If you see me at the airport we would be more then happy to get you to disney. We are staying at POP, but we can drop you off at your resort.

Kim

Thanks, Kim....you are a real sweetie. Magical Express should be fine. Were you one of the ones going to the early Village People show at Epcot on Friday? If so, we'll have to find some way to recognize each other.

No problem, I am not patient enough to wait but if you change your mind let me know. I think we arrive at 10:10 and we are renting from Dollar.

No we are going to MNSSHP on Friday night, I know I am having a hard time remember where everyone is going but I know where we will all be Sat night:cool1:

Just what I need something else that makes my butt bigger you can call it more defined, I just call it big.

Heading off to home soon. I am excited to meet all of you at ToT.

Jeanne-- Our reservation is 5:20pm so I thought we should meet there before 5pm. Jean's computer is down and she is coming by the Poly before her dinner reservation. I guess if we get there around 4:45pm might work better. You have my cell so you can always call me. All the other details we can work out after we get there. I am not taking a costume for MNSSHP, but have a Wicked Witch shirt. Ok, maybe I throw in my pumpkin hat if I can find it.

Later everyone.

Nancy

Now now Nancy, we have all seen your pictures on here, you're a little hottie.

This time next week most of us will be either there, traveling or getting ready to go, everyone travel safe.

I'm off to walk, probably 4 to 5 miles. Is anyone planning on morning walks next week at WDW or are we just getting the miles in running around the parks like pre-schoolers.

Have an awesome day, walk strong.

DAve:hippie:

Good morning, team!

We will probably not schedule any planned walking time. For us, just doing the parks is a massive workout. We will only be there 3 nights and if we overschedule, it won't seem like a vacation, so we're just gonna go with the flow. We also have the little issue of switching hotels which should be fun. Of course, Friday morning we'll still be at POFQ and you know what that means.......fresh beignets and coffee! Anyone want to come over and join us?

Safe travels to those that are leaving for the World......see ya real soon!

Good Morning:

Well after being frustrated with my shins and talking with Karen we decided I was trying too hard so I have regrouped our troup and will now follow the Hal Higdon’s ½ marathon training schedule for the next 12+ weeks until the ½. Powerwalking his program….

Last night we went to the track and did my 3 miles which of course was quite easy for me. It warmed up my legs and I felt great after. Today I do a 2 miler but it will probably be on the tm or back at the track since it’s getting dark earlier here. Tomrrow is 3 miles, Rest Friday and then 30 min cross on Saturday and a 4 mile on Sunday. May swap Sat for Sun since I’d like an easy day on Sunday.

Funny it happens that my 10 mile walk falls the week of Christmas which is when I’m on vacation – how perfect.

Keep plugging away and if something isn’t working, why not regroup as I have done.

So very jealous of all you leaving in the next few days.:grouphug:

Safe travels and look forward to meeting each and everyone of you. And of course, saying hi again to those I have already met.

I have my lists going of all the things I have to do before we go. I am a neat freak....when I am away....the house has to be completely spotless before I go away so this weekend will be nuts. Wow only Wed and I am already talking about the weekend..... I think I need a holiday!!!!

Denise: So sorry to hear about your shins, I suffer on and off with them and no rhyme or reason on why some walks I get them and some I don't but take care I know how painful they are....

Ok I am on phones today which means I want to be chatty where is everyone....oh ya already heading to the world:lmao:

Kim

Good idea Denise. Sounds like you are the Drill Sgt who keeps your troops in line. You are a fast walker to.

I decided on my 2.25 route today. I was satisfied with the effort even though the time was not as fast as I normally do this route.

I'm a firm believer in effort over time as a guage of how well you did a walk. I had a 10K saturday and a 14 miler on monday so I can't expect to have a super time on tired legs. I did my walk today at 13 mpm.

For anyone that hasn't found one here is a good pace calculator from Cool Runnings:

I'm good with the Pre-Schooler option also although I may drag Erica out for at least a couple of morning walks.

Kathy and I have done early morning walks when on our vacations, despite the preschooler option we plan on. We actually have a couple preplanned! But since we will be in WDW for 8 days, we need to pace ourselves!! :rolleyes1

Hmmm. Let me try that again!

Hi, everyone!

Not sure exactly what happened, but I really did intend to write a little more than that! LOL!

Robert, I'm not sure of exact schedules yet, but if we meet up watching the WS, that would be fun!!!

Kim, I know EXACTLY what you mean about having a clean house before leaving for vacation. I'm not really a neat freak, but I really, really don't like coming home to a big mess. DH will be here for a week after I leave before he leaves to meet me in VA Beach, but he's really good about not making messes. No, that's not really true. He DOES make messes, but he's VERY good about cleaning them up! LOL! I not only want to get my house cleaned up before I leave, I have some yard work I want to get done. Heaven knows where I'm going to find the time for all the projects I have in mind!

I may have mentioned before that DH and I have timeshare off property. I manage to get down there once or twice a year, usually. I have always made a practice of walking early in the morning around the timeshare property before spending a day in WDW. I am not opposed to the preschool approach, but I might change my mind if I feel like I'm eating waaaay to much. I feel like I'll have a better idea of whether I want to do that after I see the resort and see if there is any place TO walk early in the morning! Have you all ever noticed that hotels that have exercise rooms and pools generally won't open them up until half the day is gone???? I find that very annoying. I like to get up, get my workout done, shower and then be ready for breakfast and then go play! Most places make that very difficult unless you want to eat breakfast at 10:00 a.m. or something......Yes, I admit it. I'm a very early bird!:)

Dave, I already like all of you and want to come and play again! I don't have a specific date in mind for that at this time, though......Right now I'm concentrating on THIS trip and I can hardly wait!

See you soon!

Kathy

That's wonderful Kathy. We just met the WISH group briefly last January the evening before the races. Everyone was very friendly and the next day all those people in florecent yellow lime shirts were cheering us the whole way.

This time were know each other a lot better and there are many more meets and activities going on. I'm new in the WISH team and I'm really impressed with everyone. I just hope everyone doesn't think I'm to nutty.

We are having a storm here as I type this. The wind is howling, sheets of rain coming down sideways, evil sky, the full monty. I'm hoping the rain stops so I can do my walk in the wind.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Dave:hippie:

Good morning team!!!!

Only 5 more working days and I am on vacation!!!!!:cool1: :cool1:

Well I broke down and got a halloween costume for MNSSHP, only cause the girl at work was asking me to dress up for work so I figure if I have to. So I already had a Raggedy Ann costume I just needed a wig so I got that last night so if you see a raggedy ann and prisioner walking around on MNSSHP night that will be me and DH....lol but I am not wearing it for the ToT run.

My training has been so non-exhistant since I did my 1/2 I am really worried about 13K in less then 2 weeks but I hope to be able to pump it up over the next week and be OK, not looking for any time issues just to finish.....with enough time to ride ToT and RnRC a ton of times.

Have a great day all.

Kim

I had one of those absolutely perfect workouts this morning. It was storming when I got up but by the time I had breakfast and was ready to go the sky was starting to clear. The sky was beautiful with lots of color and wild looking dark clouds racing by on the strong winds. With the sun beaming through the clouds it kinda looked like a bibical picture.

There was still a stiff wind and walking into it was wonderful. I had to lean my head slightly foreward to keep it from blowing my cap off. The hills where sporty with the added challange of the wind.

My time wasn't good but the experience was awesome. So 4 miles in the log and a walk to remember. I played in the pool and had a soak and stretch in the hot tub.

Now for some good micro-wave dinner and a nap before work.

Have a fun day y'all.

I'm BACK!!! Hi everyone! Well.. I have been missing mostly because up until today I didn't know if I would still be able to do TOT....and frankly, it made me sad to read all of your fun postings :( Work has been crazy.. and my life.. well... let's just leave that to my therapist ;)

I am a walker also... and did my first half last year with the Wishers.... and spent a fun filled evening at EPCOT.. and then Pleasure Island!! I am looking forward to seeing all of you again.. and meeting all the new folks!! So... TOT .. here I come.. Oh.. and I will be attending Solo... so..perhaps you will all find it in your hearts to keep me company? I am a great ride buddy!! So.. I am happy to be back.... and will be posting to catch up with all of you!!! : )

Kathy

Welcome back Kathy. The ToT event is gonna be a hoot. I of course promise to behave.

We are having tornado warnings all around us tonight. The wind is howling and the lightning flashes are very beautiful. I love sleeping with the sound of a storms fury. I do hope there is no trail of damage tomorrow.

Have an awesome night everyone.

Remember you spend one third of your life sleeping so sleep with somebody good.:cloud9:

Dave:hippie:

Alrighty, in response to my plea for advice on how to increase my speed, the main theme was INTERVALS. So, tonight was a 3-miler on the treadmill. After warming up for 5 minutes at my comfy 3 mph, I did intervals between 3.2 and 3.6. I'd made up my mind to shave a minute per mile off my 20 minute mile, so set the distance to 3 and the time to 57 minutes. Well, danged if I didn't finish up with 2:40 left on the clock! That's 54:40! Yahooo! I know it's easier with the treadmill "pushing" me, but it's a good start!

:yay:
