Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

Just a quick training post. Did 4 mile walk last night. I need to pay attention that it gets dark earlier and get my buns in gear to start walking as soon as I get home from work.

Have a great day everyone.

Nancy

I agree, it's dark earlier here in NH too so we need to get done quicker, gee do you think that will help improve my pace? That's the ticket, walk fast to avoid the dogs, dark and doo doo on the pavement :rolleyes1

Years ago Mark and I used to go out in the early am to walk and we'd walk in the middle of the street at 4:45 am. The only critters out besides us were the skunks and police. If a cop would come by we'd move but that's about it. We saw too many skunks to walk close to the sidewalk.

Has everyone seen Wendy's display of her medals? We put up a similar medal display last night. "Thanks for the idea Wendy".

Dave:hippie:

Dave: I saw it several weeks ago, but can't find it now no matter how hard I try. Could you please point me in the right direction? I want to show it to my husband so he'll be even more motivated to earn some medals!

I did a 45-minute cycling class today and then my 2-mile quick walk. That's it for the day.

I spoke with my daughter yesterday and she made me feel so good. Basically she wants to know if they have showers at the finish line because she really wants to shower after the full but doesn't want to miss cheering me on for the rest of the race. I just assumed she would finish and go back to the hotel and sleep, especially since she will have had 2 early mornings. But no, she wants to be there for me and I can't tell you how good that made me feel. It reminds me of when Nancy and I were about at the 11 mile mark at our half-marathon......all of a sudden we heard someone screaming "Move your butts, you 2 in the green!" Even after doing her event she ran a few miles back to prod us along. Anyhow, when I pointed out that she should be finished around 10am and we won't be done until at least 12:30 PLUS whatever time it takes us to cross over the start mat, she realized there will be plenty of time to hop over to the Poly, shower and come back.

Speaking of cheering, I bought some green cherrleading pom-poms at the dollar store yesterday so I can cheer on the people doing the Donald. They're more kelly green than lime colored, but for a dollar, they'll do fine.

I also understand there's a big hill at around Mile 22. I seriously need someone to stand there with a big boom box and play the theme from Rocky! Any volunteers? :rotfl2:

Jeanne I'm not sure what post that picture was in, sorry.

Well our planned 14 miler didn't happen. Since neither of us got a good nights sleep Erica couldn't keep her eyes open this morning so she went back to bed. We might go for a walk at WKU with the dog after Erica gets home from the dentist.

I guess I'll just do some house work while she sleeps. Yea I'm a little disappointed. But stuff happens.

Denise, be careful, sounds like you are in a pretty scary situation there.

I need a vacation, hey anyone wanna just say screw-it and go to DisneyWorld next month?

Actually my "rocky" song is Dreams by Van Halen. It's the only one that will make me move:

World turns black and white
Pictures in an empty room
Your love starts fallin' down
Better change your tune
Yeah, you reach for the golden ringReach for the sky
Baby, just spread your wings

We'll get higher and higher
Straight up we'll climb
We'll get higher and higher
Leave it all behind

Run, run, run awayLike a train runnin' off the track
Got the truth bein' left behind
Falls between the cracks
Standin' on broken dreams
Never losin' sight, ah
Well just spread your wings

We'll get higher and higher
Straight up we'll climb
We'll get higher and higher
Leave it all behind

So baby dry your eyes
Save all the tears you've cried
Oh, that's what dreams are made of
'Cause we belong in a world that must be strong
Oh, that's what dreams are made ofYeah, we'll get higher and higher
Straight up we'll climb
Higher and higher
Leave it all behind
Oh, we'll get higher and higher
Who knows what we'll find?

So baby dry your eyes
Save all the tears you've cried
Oh, that's what dreams are made of
Oh baby, we belong in a world that must be strong
Oh, that's what dreams are made of

And in the end on dreams we will depend
'Cause that's what love is made of

Denise: those lyrics are very inspirational, but I don't think I've ever heard it before. Now maybe if you could actually sing it to me........:rotfl:

Dave:hippie:

I like the idea also. I got a small dowel & put it up (less than 2'). It has my two Minnie medals on it from May. When it gets full, I'll get a bigger one. I thought it smart to start small. BUT, I get to put another one on there when I get my RFTT medal!!!

I also got pins relating to each race (red dress pin for Go Red for Women 5k, Minnie pin for Minnie Marathon, & I'll get a F&W pin for the RFTT) to pin on each medal ribbon. I thought that would be fun.

Hi!

I'm a relatively new walker, I  Dave, may I join you?

I started off determined to jog the Donald, and had all kinds of issues with running -- too slow, too hard on my body, carrying way too much extra, etc. Dave helped me see that it was ok to change my objective, and I've been walking for a few weeks. I feel great! I actually enjoy my workouts for the first time. I'm finally starting to lose a bit (thanks WW online), and I feel good about moving every day. That said, I am so new, and I'm eager to read all your advice and experiences. I won't get to do ToT, but I can't wait for the Donald -- ok, I can, I have to train to get there!:flower3:

I am also still slow enough to get swept -- I can do 3.0 mph forever, but crank it up and I can't go for more than 5 miles. I've been walking 1-1.5 hrs most days (it's only been a week or so), and I seem to able to do that without repercussions. My dh is a runner who leaves me in the dirt, so I don't really have a "buddy". I plan to start the MfM plan that has 14 weeks to race day in a few weeks. I'm really hoping that helps me improve enough that I won't get swept, and I will be able to go the distance!

I have posted at the weekly walk/run thread, but I just can't keep up with that, and I feel that I just don't belong with the elite runners (hey, when you're as slow as I am, those 9 min miles sound elite!). I feel like I'm in Preschool, and I got thrown in with a room of 5th graders. I'm trying to learn my numbers, and they're doing long division...:scared1:

I like Van Halen (yes, the Sammy version -- I have "Right Now" on my ipod, and I can add "Dreams"), can I play too?

Maria

Maria, so so glad you came over to join us. You are very welcome. We all learn from each other over here on the walkers thread.:flower3:

Always room for another pretty princess.

Hi Bill, How is the back doing?

Dave:hippie:

Not too bad. Did some strength and stationary bike yesterday. Going to try a slow 2 miler tonight to see where it stands on that front. In general, if I don't sit or stand too long, it is okay. I just switch back and forth from my regular desk to my stand-up desk while in the office. The toughest part is loosening it up after lying in bed. Maybe I need to consider giving up on the sleep stuff. What the heck, "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" -- Warren Zevon.

Well good luck with the 2 miler. When I first get up in the morning my achillies is stiff. If I flex it for a bit instead of jumping right out of bed it's better. By the time I get the dog out though it's loosened up pretty good.

Dave:hippie:

Denise, I make dogs howl to.

Maria, when you are doing your walk workout is it on a treadmill or outside? You should walk brisk but comfortably for a mile till you get warm, about when you start sweating, then speed up a little for short distances. Using the treadmill example, warm up at 3 mpm the once warm do quarters, once around the track at 3.5 or 4.0 with alternating quarters of 3.0 to recover. Or outside from telephone pole to pole, alternating with a rest between the next set of poles.

Here is a link to racewalking 101, even if you don't race walk using some of the techniques can make you a more efficient walker.

Good morning!

One of these days I'm going to log in and read when I really have time to respond to everyone! One of these days......

Maria - welcome!

Bill - glad your back is better!

Yesterday was water aerobics for me and today is rest day! I LOVE rest day!!!!

I figure I'll be able to walk outside until after I get back from ToT and Virginia Beach. Then I'll be on the TM during the week and outside only on Saturdays. Boo-hoo! One advantage, though, is that I can do the TM before work and have my work-outs done before life begins to interfere with them.

Gotta get to work. Keep on walkin'!!!!

Kathy

Good morning Walkers.

I had a very nice 4.5 mile walk this morning on the WKU hills. Total time was 59:30. Nice walk but very humid and I nearly got run over 3 times. I think I'll do a different route for a while.

I hope Tiger Lily forgives me for that pic I posted on the Minnie Questions Thread.

Walk strong y'all.

DAve:hippie:

Good Afternoon!

I walk on the TM during the week, and outdoors on the weekends. I've been walking to tv shows, which seems to work well for me. I'm actually taking today off. I walked for 7 days in a row, I think my body is going to hold a protest if I don't have a break -- plus, I really don't want to burn out.

Dave -- Thanks for the great advice. I will definitely check out the site. I really, really don't want to be swept. :scared1:

Kathy -- Like you, I'm hoping to walk outside for as long as possible. I had to work up my nerve to be outside, but I really love it and I'd rather do that if I could. :sunny:

Denise -- I also enjoy the Red Rocker. "I Can't Drive 55" is one of my "get the pace up" songs. :cool1:

Bill -- I hope your back is better. From your posts, I thought you were more of a "Werewolves of London" guy...:thumbsup2

Everyone have a great afternoon!
Maria

Good morning guys and pretty princesses. I'm going to just hide in here today. I'll get in less trouble that way.

No body ever did answer my question about wearing red for that Minnie race. After the picture of the red shorts the question kinda got lost in the shuffle. So do you wear red for that race? I have heard there is a red dress race somewhere, is that it?

It's raining here in the redneck capital, so I'll probably be dancing with the treadbeast today. Or as Mel said walking the rotating plank.

My lady and I had a discussion once about the subject that Nancy brought up on the weightloss thread. I told her that I understood how hard it is to get rid of the extra fluff. I owed her understanding, but she owed me being fit and active. So she works out and stays fit so we can enjoy our races and life's adventures together.

Happiness is when your mate is your best friend. I'm double blessed there. Of course mine is also my adult supervision. I tend to get bored with normal and have to a little choas.

I hope everyone wakes today with a smile and a song in your heart.:flower3:

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning:

Yes I too am blessed with being married for almost 33 years to my best friend. He also encourages me to get going on the walks when I'm not in the mood. I do the same for him.

Last night did some jogging on the TM and 20 min on the ellip for a total of about 1 hour of workouts. Between warm up -cool down etc. It was in the 90's here in NH quite unusual for us in September. Temps will be more normal in the 70's for a high over the weekend. YEAH!

Another busy day here at work so I'll leave all of you. Take care, everbody do a bit of something today even if it's 30 min of mild walking. I REALLY was sore last night and after a good warm up and cool down my shins weren't hurting at all. Even this morning they are still pretty good.

denise

Just a quickie post to wish you all a great weekend. I'm headed off to Boston in less than 2 hours. I hope to get some quality walking in, but you never know. This is an off-week as far as long walks go, so I'm not going to sweat it.
Talk to you all again on Monday!

Dave: don't get into trouble if I can't be around to witness it! Poor, poor Polish team.....:rotfl2:
