Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

What do you all wear for training in the cold? I can't even think about walking more than 3-4 miles on the treadmill so I need to suck it up and walk in the cold. I'm thinking light-weight, moisture wicking type outer wear. Do you wear hats? I know I'm late in planning this--this is my first go-round! :)

Good morning, Team!

I had such a great time this weekend with all the fellow WISHers that did the Run for Victory Junction. John and i had dinner with Wendy and Pat and it was great to get to know these 2 amazing ladies! (Dave, I told Wendy about the walking shoe thread, but she and Pat were off to visit Biltmore Estate after the event and wouldn't be home until some time today) I thought the course was tough, even worse than Raleigh. The entire stretch was either uphill or downhill with paractically no flat terrain at all. Wendy said they changed it a little from last year and she also thought this year was a little tougher. There were very few spectators to cheer us on other than the race officials, but they were fabulous! We stayed at a Hampton Inn which was the official race motel and the staff there was just wonderful. They even packed us great snack bags which came in very handy after the race during our drive back home. We got a nice goodie bag and both John Bingham and Patti Petty were standing at the finish line to "high 5" everyone as they crossed. Our Penguin medal is awesome! After the race, Richard Petty signed medal ribbons and posed for photos with the finishers. I'm not a NASCAR fan, but I figured what the heck, and Wendy took my photo with him. Everyone there was so nice and the kids camp was just amazing to see. Wendy called it a NASCAR Disney World and she is absolutely right.
I think I got a best time, but will never know for sure. They only chip timed us at the finish so all our times are official clock times. I caught a glimpse of the clock and I finished at 3:03:xx. My time in Raleigh was a high 3:01 but that was a net time. It probably took only between a minute or 2 to cross the start line, so if I didn't better my time, I'm right up there close to it. I had planned to go out nice and easy and walk with my husband, but guess who took off like a bat outta hell again? I didn't want to get smoked like I had at TofT, so I picked up the pace and passed him. After that, there was no turning back!
Now I only have 2 more long walks until the Mickey.....I can't believe this is finally happening.

Kim: could you please come to Raleigh and do my shopping for me? Oh and after that, setting up the tree and all the decorations would be nice also. I have a funny feeling that by the time my kids all get home (the week before Christmas) things will still not be up....at which point, I'll give them the job! The fact that Mommy is "training" helps me get away with alot!

Hope all the guys are healing form their injuries.

Jean: Congrats on your PR, sucks that they didn't do chip times but sounds like a really fun event. I would love to come down to do all that for ya, with the weather we are having I hope we can dig out by January to get to Florida.

Sass: I dress in layers making sure the top later is wind and water resistant. Definaltye I wear a hat but not gloves, my hands for some reason never get cold when I am walking, but the ears and forehead are usually numb.

Kim

Kim--I've seen runners with stocking caps on. My concern was overheating. I did buy a bright lime green stocking cap though--mostly to wear so others would be able to find my body if I die on one of my long walks LOL :lmao:

Hi Guys!

Just checking in quickly. Today after work I'm scheduled to walk for an hour. I'm going to consciously slow down and work on my form. I can't seem to do both at the same time...

I am firmly committed to exercising indoors while it's cold, so I'm not a good "cold weather" person. The snow that is falling right now is all the deterrent I need...

Jeanne -- You are awesome! Woohoo!:woohoo:

Kim -- Feel free to come to my house and do any holiday chores that take your fancy... :rotfl:

Dave -- I finally got my packet, so dh and I are all set. Don't worry, it will come. We couldn't very well have Goofiness without our Panda! :thumbsup2

Well Pretty Sassy Princess, it depends on where you live. We went out today in 30 degree weather with some wind. We live in Southern Kentucky so hot in the summer and you never know in the winter. We dressed in what would probably be to warm for a northerner.

Erica wore, in tights and a skirt, with built in shorts on the bottom and on top: Sports bra, long sleeve tech shirt, (Disney Marathon Shirt of course, short sleeve WISH tech shirt, WISH Cotton Hoodie and gloves.

I wore two pair of tech pants, long sleeve tech shirt, long sleeve cotton shirt, jacket and gloves.

We were fine when walking with the wind at our backs but were chilled when we faced the wind.

Hope that helps, remember there is way more to you than you realize.

Jeanne, wonderful race report, thanks for sharing. It sounds like something Erica and I need to do if we can see our WISH friends. You guys are such awesome people.

Kim, I have to wear gloves if it's under 50 degrees, but just a ball cap down to zero. I guess there is little in my head to freeze, or my thoughts are just to steamy:) Erica is the same as you she hardly ever does gloves but has to cover her ears.

Maria:love:

Denise, glad you keep DisneyWorld under control till the main WISH invasion force can come in. Is the January Marathon week the spring break for baby boomers?:)

Hi Connie:yay:

Miranda, I'm ready to go back to. We are going to Gattlinburg in the Smokies for some hill training next week. It will probably be cool there.

Have a super day y'all.

Relaxing Panda:hippie:

Back to the start of week 5 of PT. Ugly and painful as usual. Have only 2 1/2 more weeks before insurance is used up for 2007:( Have to love that you can only need 20 PT visits a year no matter how many different things break down???

Saw Ortho Dr today and doesn't think stress fracture. Just need rest and PT. We also discussed and scheduled my knee surgery for 1/31/08. This gives me a week back from WDW to regrup before being down again. If I am lucky, they will scope and just remove loose cartiledge. If not, they will do micro fracture surgery. Big difference as if scop, I will be on crutches for a few days vs. 5 weeks. Recovery is 4-6 months for MF so no Minnie races and I might not even be able to walk around in May:sad2: DL 1/2 might be out in Aug! So positive thoughts and pixie dust for luck. If just scope I will be fine for the May trip and races as well as for all my other Disney races.

Dave: It was windy here today but in the 50's so I will try to get a 3-4 miler in tomorrow.

Kim: You are so organized getting all your shopping done.

Jeanne: Great report and race. You will do great in Jan.

Denise & Miranda: Glad you had a great trip. It sucks to come home from a WDW trip when you live in a Winter area. Jan is tough for me:(

Great job everyone and keep up the good training. Everyone like myself get better soon!

BTW, to prove to you you are never to old. My friend Helen Klein just broke the World Record for 85 year old women at the CIM on Sunday. The old record was 6:55 and she ran 5:35. A record by 1:20  She is a truely amazing women and if you get a chance to meet her or her her speak about all the adventure racing and 100 milers she has done you will be speachless. In her house they have 3 big walls with all of her awards and accomplishments. She is a most humble person I have ever met.

She set the 80 yr old record 5 yrs ago with a 4:31:scared1:

Just something to think about....

The theme at the Senior Olympics was: "Age is only a limitation you put on yourself".

Robert, your story of Helen reminds me of a conversation my doctor and I had last week. He asked me what my plans for the future were. Normally, that isn't an odd question to pose to a person in their teens or twenties, but not one usually asked of a person 50+ years! Being the kind of person that I am, though, I had a ready answer. I want to drop dead at the finish line of my last race at 108 years old. My doctor thought that was a worthy ambition! :goodvibes Anyway, the point of his question was this: Recent studies have found that people who retire without a plan and nothing to do die within 10 years of retirement. I suspect that none of us Wishers will suffer from that fate. As stated in other places, "Too many races, too little time!"

I am back to training. The forced absence due to back injury and laziness, has me up and walking again. The only side benefit to the whole thing was that my PF is much improved!

Good Morning....BOY I CAN"T WAIT TO GET TO FLORIDA....just please tell me you don't have snow there.

We have about 2 FT......not kidding it is unbelieveable.....So TM training for me:headache:

Sass: Funny thing is in the summer I can't even wear a ball cap cause I find it too hot but I am ok in the cold temps.

Robert: Lots of PD for you sounds like you are working through alot. WOW your friend is amazing......Good For HER!!!!!

I can't get motivvated to train....what is wrong with me....I have the time now that everything is done but I keep telling myself...well tomorrow I will start again. I find it so hard with the weather we have to get out and walk and I really don't like the TM for more then about 30 mins......ugghhh at this rate I will not get my medal and I will be so upset as I started all this training and runs just to complete a disney 1/2 marathon ......UGHH WHATS WRONG WITH ME....ok pity party over ...sorry everyone

Winter running wear - I also layer, several years ago I found a jogbra with fleece lining, I love them for the winter, wish I could find new ones. Next will be a long sleeve tech shirt, then a light weight fleece lined hoody, then a light weight fleece lined wind breaker zip jacket. I always wear a hat and ear muffs. My ears are very sensitive. I will sometimes take off the hat or the jacket if I get too warm as I walk. The bottom half is usually fleece leggings, then depending on the temp and the wind, wind pants over. They are harder to take off while walking if I get too warm, so I will go lighter there. I did find a pair of trail runners for bad weather shoes, (thanks again for all the imput I got on this board on the shoe question) will probably only wear them if there is snow or slush on the ground as they are heavy and stiff as compared to my regular shoes.

I am an outdoor walking person, and only go to the treadmill when the wind is blowing at 40-60 mph as it is today! It is really difficult to walk in wind over 30 mph. The last few days, I have only gotten out for a quick loop (1.25 miles) with the dogs. Yesterday I was on the treadmill to make up some distance, and I will be today also. Tomorrow I should be able to get outside again.

Good morning Walker Friends.

Erica and I are waiting for the day to warm just a bit before we head out. We have 12 miles planned, or untill I begin to whimper.

Remember you don't have to suffer from insanity, you can relax and enjoy it.

Have an awesome day y'all.

Fear of Freezing Panda:hippie:

My suggestion to all those needing warm clothing suggestions is this:
MOVE TO NORTH CAROLINA!

Seriously, our weather here is very mild in the winter. It hardly ever gets too cold to walk outside (unless you go out during the wee wee hours of the morning). I can't walk with alot of extra bulk, so a long sleeve tech shirt and a sleeveless fleece vest will usually be enough.
Kim, if I had to deal with temps like yours I'd need lots of motivation also. Just think of it this way.....you probably have only 2 more long walks until taper madness. (BTW, this is my first year.....exactly what is taper madness?!?)

Jeanne, when you start cutting back your mileage (tappering) for an event, you tend to 'lose your mind!' Hence the 'madness' part of that. You really don't know what to do with yourself when you are not training, so you kinda lose your mind a little. Then you have too much time on your hands, then your body starts hurting all over and even your small runs/walks feel like torture! What I kept saying was "if I can't run 3-4 miles without feeling like crap, what is 26.2 going to be?" It is all part of the madness. Don't get to freaked out over it. Happens to everyone.

Good luck with yours!

Beth

Ouch! That doesn't sound like too much fun. And here I thought taper was a happy time!

Beth: did you take lots of photos at the special dinner? Will we get to see them?

Also, when does Nancy come back?

Jeanne, during taper maddness everyone else acts like you and I. Now isn't that a scary thought?

Tired Panda:hippie:

I have been going through taper madness for the last 5 weeks:scared1:

On that note swam 1/3 mile this morning and than a couple hours later went out and did a very slow 4.1 miles in 1:13. Longest day since ToT:woohoo:

Shin still a little sore but better than last week. Did some nice ice massages on both legs.

Hoping to be doing reverse tapering over the next 3-4 weeks.

OK, I am embarrassed to poke my head back in the door. You guys have been talking about peeing and taper madness, and I've been off doing boring tech writing and missed it all. Where is the fairness in this world?

Congratulations to Beth and Jeanne on their awesome performances this past weekend. If you want to see photos, you can check out my post here:

This month is pretty busy for me. I have a field trip with my son this week and a marathon next weekend, two 5K possibilities over the next two weekends, a family trip during Christmas, and something in early January -- oh yeah, the Goofy! :rotfl:

I have read roughly the last 4 pages of posts, but I don't know if I'll ever catch up completely. I'll try to be more diligent in the future -- don't want to get kicked out of the cool club. (Great phrase!)
