Walkers Sharing Experiences

Holy crap, Tracy, you don't mess around! And that kick up my butt really HURT! You are totally right....I need to write down my goals and get focused.
Tomorrow evening John and I will do a 5-mile walk which is a little bit long for a mid-week one, but we need to make up for our bad weekend. If i don't do it, I'm going to have to submit to another one of your lashings and I don't want that again! :worship: One of the problems is that I recently lost part of my training route due to a major road that was under construction finally opening up to traffic. I need a change of venue and maybe Jackie can help with that.

Jackie: What is it with Galloway that leaves so many people injured? My neighbor who has run her whole life, but has always been afraid of events, finally registered for the City of Oaks Half. Then she signed up with Galloway and has developed PF so bad she can't do anything right now. Another friend, who is an instructor at the Y, is doing the Marine Corp marathon this month and then the Goofy in January. She's been training with Galloway and is recently nursing all sorts of injuries. I think John Bingham's program is so much safer. That's what I used last year and I was fine. This year is another story........Anyhow, I would LOVE to do some long walks together. it may just be the change I need. Please understand that the pace I did at the EEC is probably not going to happen anytime soon in the neasr future. I can go sub-13 for short walks (around 2 miles) but for the longer ones I'm more like a 14:15....which may be too slow for you. I was going to shoot for 10 this weekend and then 12 the next. That's because the weekend before City of Oaks, I'll be at TofT and that is only 8 so I was going to use it as a taper week. But i'm pretty flexible and as long as I get in one 12-miler before TofT, i'll be OK. If you don't think I'm too slow for you, let me know and I'll PM you my phone #. They just opened that long road in Heritage so i'm pretty bummed out about that. Have you ever done the 5-mile loop at Wakefield? It's brutal! I'd be willing to have you show me the greenway though. Other than Shelley lake, I 've never done the extension. Signing off now, more tomorrow.

I'm afraid Tracy's gonna have me licking her boots if I don't get my act in gear....no sweet dreams for me tonight!

Jeanne: Sorry, I hope it didn't come off too harsh. The 5 miles sounds good and I will be waiting to see how it turns out. Hope that Jackie can help put a bit of a twist and change to the training. Sometimes it helps to have a change in route. That is why I like going to the "dump" when I get a chance. It is different and offers different challenges - besides just getting in the miles.

Take care Jeanne and don't have too many nightmares of wet noodles chacing you. :lmao:

Tracy

  Dang Tracy were you wearing leather when you wrote that?

Note to self don't tic off Tracy, the princess is a bruiser and a butt kicker.

Reminds me of something I read a long time ago:

The masochist says "Beat me"........and the sadist replies "No" (here's where I get in trouble with the censors again!)

Good night, sweet Tracy.......:worship: :worship: :worship: ....anything else you'd like done? Like maybe scrubbing your bathroom with my toothbrush? :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Jeanne Don't loose focus now. We are getting down to the important parts of our training. Besides, if you remember, you helped me a few months ago so I hope I can return the favor. I am very much looking forward to actually meeting you at the DIS meet at POP in January. I owe you a debt of thanks for helping me look past my past. So good or bad, right or wrong, let me make a selfish plea. Do it for me. Each mile you and I put in together will get us that much closer to that Meet and Greet.

My training today was not exactly what I was hoping for. I wanted to get outside but due to work, I wasn't able too. So I got my legs moving by getting on the elliptical for 6.25 miles and then I got on the bike for 18.75 miles. So I had a nice 25 mile day. Tomorrow, I am supposed to have a short day at work. If it happens the way it is scheduled too, I am planning a long walk at our local track. Very hilly and a good test . The last time that I went around it, I felt like I was moving slowly but my time was pretty fast. (Not that I could keep up with Dave or Racey Tracy but I wouldn't get swept up at any of the races.) I will let you all know how it goes tomorrow night when I get home.

Thanks for the inspiration!
Bryan

I have a question for those of you that have a Garmin. I have the 205 and when I first got it I set it up to alert me if I walked slower than 14.3 or faster than 12. I'm at Disney now and was going to wear Garmie to the parks so I could see how much DH and I walk, but I can't figure out how to diable the alert. There's no way I'll wear it in the park with it alerting me constantly, annoying everyone around me. I'm terrible with techie things and I don't have my instruction manual with me. If anyone can help, Thank You.

Bubba: thanks for the kind words....I WILL do it for you.....that's what this board is all about.....each one of us suporting one another. I can't wait to meet in January!

I think I may know what one of my problems is. Somehow even though I always start my long walks at a moderate pace, I have the tendency to speed up and that wears me out quickly. I treat every minor landmark like it's the finish line and rush towards it. After a few miles, I'm totally beat. Tonight will be 5 nice brisk (not fast) miles. Hopefully that will go well, and i'll be able to do one or two more short walks before tackling 10 miles on Saturday.

Jeanne my blog entry for today is for you. You may be right about your walking speed. I get progressively faster as I walk, the first mile is a slow 14ish to warm up then each mile for the next couple is faster till I settle into a 12 mim per mile pace. If I'm in a short race though I get good and warmed up prior to the start so I can go ful out right from the start since my competition her takes no prisoners and shows no mercy.

Sam Sam I'm not sure since I don't use one, go to the Hakuna Matata team thread and ask since I know a couple of them use one all the time. You are at Disney?

Jeanne: My new friend. I think you might have hit it right on. I was doing that also, and then I realized what I was doing and stopped. I also have a BAD tendency to rush at the beginning of a race. I always have to have some "self talk" to get me to do MY pace and not everyone elses. Looking forward to hearing how the 5 miles goes tonight.

Sharon: I will look into it with the Garmin.

OK on my old garmin 205...
Turn it on. wait for it to set up
Push the MODE button two times to get to the menu area.
Arrow down to highlight TRAINING and press the ENTER key.
Highlight TRAINING OPTIONS and press ENTER.
Highlight ALERTS and press ENTER.
Highlight TIME/DIST ALERT and press ENTER.
That's the area I think you are looking for to stop the alerts.

Hope that helps, Tracy

Dave: I read your blog entry today and it really helped. Thanks for the inspiration. (I like your method better than Tracy's....she is one tough cookie!:rotfl2: )

We did our 5 miles tonight and it wasn't too bad. A little under a 15:30 pace which is OK because it really is a tough course with l-o-n-g hills. I can do that one for our 10 miler, but will have to find something else for anything higher. I am so bummed out that they opened that road in my neighborhood. It was alot more difficult than WDW so it was good to train on, but not as hard as the one I'm using now. So today was a good day......I worked out twice (hour spin class this morning) and had a light dinner of white meat chicken salad with some walnuts, celery and green apple. Dessert will be a small square of dark chocolate, but i'm saving that for later.

Hey Jeanne:
I am so glad you were able to get out there and get your 5 miles in. Wow and you even did some extra work this morning on the spin bike. :thumbsup2
GOOD FOR YOU.
I am glad that the butt kicking you asked for...
Hello fellow walkers.....

I will gladly put my big butt in the air so you can all kick it for me! Please, someone inspire me!

worked!!!:lmao: :rotfl:
I can't be all that bad, can I????:confused3 I only used a boot and wet noodles. The boot might hurt some, but the wet noodles are all for show.
Now, no need for people to be afraid of me, really!!!
Did 4 miles this morning and walked by the park I usually go to. It was sad because the county parks are now closed on Tuesdays :sad2: . Hopefully Thursday I can go to the dump for some Mount Trashmore Experiences!!

Have a good evening walkers!

Tracy

Great job Jeanne! See just had to get a little push (aka Wet Noodle Tracy).

I got in 10 miles on the bike, did core and stretching then hit the pool and hot tub. Really feel it in the thigh. I have GOT to remember to stretch after every event. I do it when I work out and go on long walks but after an event....not so much. Don't think this would be as sore if I had.

Have a great eve!

Dave: I wanted to say on this special day....

Hope you had a great 7th Birthday!!

Lots of Love, Tracy

yes, Happy Birthday, Dave! (I said it on another thread, but it needs to be said here too!)
party: :bday: party: :bday: party:

Jeanne - Great job on your 5 miles! Amazing what a little butt kicking will do... When are you planning on doing the 10 this weekend? I've got a pretty full schedule but might be able to come out and try 10 instead of the 8 I was planning on. I've done my last couple of walk/runs at Spring Forest Rd park - it's only a half mile loop, but it gives me the option to stop at any distance I need to.

Jackie

Jackie: Saturday is the only day I can do it this week. I like to start around 7:30 or 8 so it doesn't take too much out of my day. You can try Wakefield or I can meet you at Spring Forest Park (need directions) Do you use the 1/2 mile loop for long runs also? It doesn't get boring? That might be a good one for me because i might actually be able to run a lap every now and then. Other times I could meet you mid-week, but I have something everyday this week.

Thanks Tracy, I'll try following your directions in the morning....just too tired right now. Okay, decided to check it out anyway and I get to the TIME/Dist Alert, press enter and what I get is my preset alert but I can't see where to deselect it. :confused3 Like I said I'm really bad at techie stuff. Thanks for your help, I'll look again in the morning....that could make a big difference.

Panda, Yes we're in Disney right now, lovin' every minute. Crowds are heavier than I expected but still wonderful. I'll post over on the Hakuna Matata thread tomorrow if I don't get my Garmie problem figured out....thanks for the tip.

Once you get into the TIME/DIST alert, the TIME alert is already highlighted. Just push the Enter button and a little menu comes up, arrow up or down to hightlight OFF, then hit the enter key again. Then arrow down to the DISTANCE alert and do the same thing. Hit Enter, the small menu pops up, arrow to hightlight OFF and then hit Enter again. To get out and back to the main window just keep hitting the MODE button.

Have a great time at WDW!!
Tracy
