Wal-Mart question for accounting project

For an accounting project we have to examine companies financial statements. Wal-Mart only has merchandise inventory but on comments of project teacher said "What about Sam's Choice?"

Does anyone know if they actually manufacture their Sam's Choice and Great Value products or if those are many by another company exclusively for Wal-Mart? I'm assuming yes since they have no Raw Materials or WIP inventory.

Wal-Mart is a retailer and not a manufacturer, to the best of my knowledge. I have heard that some of their Sam's Choice and Great Value items are actually made by name brand companies (ex: Kellogg's, Campbell's), but packaged with the Wal-Mart branding.

I'm not sure what point your professor is making about the Sam's Choice items. Do you think she might have been talking about Sam's Club, which is owned by Wal-Mart? I'm not sure if Sam's Club is a separate legal entity or if their F/S would show up as part of Wal-Mart.

Walmart does not manufacture any of the Sam's Choice or Great Value brands.

For instance, if you notice when Peter Pan Peanut Butter was recalled a month or so ago, they also recalled Great Value. So now we know that Great Value Peanut butter is really Peter Pan.

Thanks for all your help. That's what I thought. I think he was just looking for a mention of the private label brands.
