Here’s an intro to our family and the members on our trip:
Our Princess Haylee (12) is the reason for this INCREDIBLE trip. She is our “Dream Child”

Haylee has a lot of medical issues. In September of 2010 her trip was granted through Toby’s Dream Foundation of VA Beach VA. She’s the Princess of our house. She is 12 but much less cognitive wise. Some days you can completely see her pre teen side come out though. Her epilepsy causes her to have very frequent seizures. Due to her CP she is permanently in a wheelchair and cannot walk. She has a feeding tube because she does not eat. (This is actually a blessing with all the meds she takes) Haylee has cortical blindness so some her vision is on and off due to her brain damage. As the years pass it seems to be more on than off though. I have always thought her deaf diagnosis was wrong because she seems to respond appropriately to questions and statements. She has Congenital Hypotonia which is “floppy muscles”. One of the main reasons for her mobility issues. I feel so blessed that she was give n this trip to have a week free of the focus of medical needs for her but to remind all of us and anyone at Disney who met her what a “Special Princess” she is!!!

Amber (17)

Amber is the Diva of the family. She is a very talented competitive cheerleader and brings so much joy to our lives. She, like her sister, is very strong willed (wonder where they get that from?!? Haha) Amber is finishing up her last year of high school and is ready to take over the world and become a dentist. She has grown into such a beautiful young lady and I am very proud of her.

Jonathan (20)

Jonathan is Haylee’s protector! He is also her respite care provider. Jonathan has had his share of hospital time. In 2008, just 1 month before his 18th birthday, he was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer. He spent the entire summer of senior year having procedures for this cancer. We have been blessed with remission for over 2 years. He is Haylee’s buddy. You can regularly find them playing video games or watching movies together. He’s the heavy lifter here and I’m glad he is at home to help us.

Neal (DH)
We “found” Neal when the kids were very young. Haylee was just 2. I figured after divorce I would never find someone who would love me and 2 children one of which would require lifelong care. He was immediately one of us. Neal has been proudly serving our country for over 20 years. He is currently in Kuwait for his 4th tour so he did not attend the trip with us. We are so excited to take him back for a redo we hope in May. We are so proud of him!!
Renea (Me)
I am just so blessed to be the mom of three FANTASTIC children. I am watching the older two grow into beautiful loving adults and I watch Haylee in amazement that God gave me a front row seat to such a beautiful miracle.

We were also blessed that our trip was able to be the same week as my father’s conference in Orlando. So we got to be with my mom all week and we planned our schedule to be with my father off and on as his schedule allowed.

We are originally from Hawaii. The Army moved us to VA so we do not live near my parents. My mom is a stay at home grandma so she can be available when needed. My dad on the other hand works a lot so we see him normally once every year or two depending on his schedule.

In May of 2010 her Neurologist told us he was putting her in for a Wish Trip since she was doing pretty well right now. About 2 weeks later I got a call from Joan at Toby’s Dream Foundation out of VA Beach that Haylee was being granted a “dream”.
In June our “Dream Granters” Anne and Jeanne came to meet us. We had discussed how Haylee loves Disney movies and riding the rides at Busch Gardens so it was decided that she would be going to Disney. They had brought her several “Disney related” gifts. We filled out some papers and they said that Jeanne would contact us soon with the details. She showed us a photo album of pics she had taken at Give Kids the World. We were getting so excited already!!! We requested to go before school started because of Amber’s senior year starting.
As time went by it became apparent we would not be able to go before school started. So I contacted them and asked if we could go during my father’s yearly conference. Not only could we spend time with them also but another hand with Haylee never hurts. It was decided that that would be a better time.
As I started to prepare I did an internet search and came upon the Wish Trip Thread on the DISboards. Thanks to this board I was getting prepared and making a game plan for our trip. Also this group brought another special element to our trip. I received a message asking if we would like to be a “Big Give” family. This is a group of talented people who make items for your trip. Not only did the packages bring fun to the planning but the items got so many compliments while we were there.
I hope you enjoy following along as much as we enjoyed the trip!

Haylee is such a beautiful princess! I can't wait to hear about the trip. And as one veteran to another, thanks to Neal for serving! Too bad he had to miss the trip but I'm sure you guys can make it up!

Our Pre Trip Sunburn
We decided to start our trip one day early because we had been invited to a special preview at the Air Show. We thought we would just be hanging out watching them practice. Little did we know we would get gifts, drinks, lunch and special meet and greets. Here we were just thinking we would hang out for a bit and go home to finish packing.
Jonathan wanted to take his new car since he hadn’t driven it very far and the air show was an hour away. Here’s Haylee enjoying the ride.

Then we hopped onto a golf cart and were escorted to the viewing area. It was like the rides had started for her.

Jonathan was really impressed by this truck. It had jet engines on it and went 325mph across the flight deck!

The kids had a blast and even met the Blue Angels.

It was so much fun. We were having so much fun that we didn’t “feel the burn” until we got in the car to head home.

Once we got home it was the final clean up and packing. My parents called to say their flight was already delayed so they would be in at 5:30pm instead of 1pm tomorrow.
I really thought I had pre packed a lot but I still didn’t get to sleep until about 2am. Maybe I was a little too excited to sleep.

Great pictures! You have a beautiful family! My husband is in Iraq right now, so I know how it feels to be missing the dh. Can't wait to hear more about your trip!

Yeah! I can't wait to read all about it!

Where’s the Limo?
So after a little bit of sleep for all we were up and getting ready to go. Now remember I have a teenage girl so she takes quite a while to get ready each morning. The limo driver had called the night before to get the details to pick us up. Our house on base is semi new and not on MapQuest yet. So he said he would pick us up by 7:30am. So Miss Amber has been up (in my bathroom) since 5:30 (remember I went to bed at 2am) I guess I had told the driver jokingly that we would be ready by 7am so he called from the front gate at 7 sharp. He said he was getting a pass and there was little line. We live on a military base so you have to get your car searched to get a visitor pass. Being Saturday morning there is never a line. So we yell to Amber to “hurry it up”, put Haylee in her chair and start moving our stuff to the curb. (At this point I’m thinking “how much stuff did we really need?!?”)

D11.jpg

We lock up the house and there we stand. We wait…. And wait….and wait!!! There are only 2 turns to our house. I gave him good directions. “Where is the limo?”
D12.jpg

FINALLY he comes around the corner. I guess the line was longer than normal.
D13.jpg

He heads up the road to turn around then we start loading. We fill the trunk, the front seat and her chair goes in the back with us. Do four people really need this much stuff?!?

When we get to the airport we get everything inside and go to check in. As we start loading the suitcases to check in I hit my ankle with one of them. I wanted to cry so badly but held it in. The ticket agent brought up the gate attendant to meet us. She told us how she also has a child with CP and the same chair as Haylee’s but in blue. We finished checking in and headed to security.
My parents had called to say they were in LA (they were supposed to be in Dallas) They had received some “pixie dust” When the agents heard they were meeting us for a wish trip they were moved immediately to another flight. They would be arriving at 4:30pm and they had been given the crews sleeper seats on the overnight flight. LUCKY!!!
Now I have packed all of Haylee feeding items and meds into one small suitcase to take onboard. So of course the testing begins. But they were very nice and pretty fast. We found some seats and hung out until the gate attendant called us up. She handed our tickets to another attendant and told her to put Haylee and me in 1st class. The big kids didn’t seem to mind since it was Haylee’s trip. It took us a bit to get her settled but then the rest of the passengers began to board and we were off.
D16.jpg

Before we knew it we were in Orlando meeting with our greeter.

The kids were amused at the rental car place when the attendant said “go to the 3rd lane and pick out your van” WHAT?!? Over we went and the kids sensible picked out a light colored van since it was hot out. We loaded up and off we went!
GKTW here we come!!!
Jonathan got this picture as we drove in.
