I have 281 points and want to waitlist something for 285 points. I know I would have to purchase the 4 additional points at $15 each. What I want is not available, but I'm not sure if I can waitlist something I don't have the points for.

If I can do this, I plan to book AKL, knowing that if the waitlist does not come through, we will have a place to stay. If the waitlist comes through, will it automatically cancel the AKL?

Thanks for the help!

If you need 285 points, they have to be available in order to fill the wait list. If you are in need of the OTU points, then those would have to be purchased as part of a reservation, that you can later cancel, so they are in your account to be eligible for the wait list.

The drawback of this is that you have to purchase ahead of time and if the wait list doesn't fill, you'd have to find a way to use them. But, if you can book AKL with your own points, then if you can always ask for them to reallocated.

Now, I have heard different situations that DVC makes you use all of your current UY points before you can buy OTU points but in other cases, they don't. So, go ahead and book AKL, and then call to book a night at least 31 days from now and ask to buy the 4 OTU points you need. Then once that is made, cancel it on the website, and it will put the OTU points into your account. Then you can set up the wait list.

I actually just did this yesterday. I have a Saturday and a Wednesday night wait listed, with a back up reservation booked which requires less points. If both nights fill, I would be 2 points short. So, here's what I did...

First, I checked to see if any of the nights I already had booked were still available AND had been booked at 7-months. Then, I called MS and explained exactly what my plan was. I cancelled my Tuesday night (1BR P/G at BWV...29 points) and had her immediately rebook it, but using only 27 of my points and purchasing 2 OTU points. She advised me that the inventory was very low and there was a risk that I could lose the night entirely. I gambled on her quick fingers and it worked! She was then able to merge my "new" reservation and so I still have the three-night confirmed reservation, bookended by the wait listed nights. So now I have the "extra" points tied up in a confirmed reservation. If my waist lists fill, it will use all of my points. If they don't, then I have 13 points to bank into next year.

Thanks for sharing. It confirms that they will now let you book a room and use OTU points, even if there are points in your account. It is definitely the way to work it if you need OTU points for a wait list. So glad it worked and hope your wait list comes through for what you want!!!

I got the Saturday night waitlist! Now we don't have to move rooms. I am still waiting on the Wednesday night so we can do a 5/2 split instead of a 4/3, but I'm happy either way:teeth:.
