Waitlist replacing current reservation confusion

I think I might be confused (ok I know I am) - I have a reservation for 3 nts in Nov. at AKL standard for 38 points. This used all of my remaining AKL Dec 2016 UY contract. There are 0 points left on that contract for 2016. I waitlisted the exact 3 nights for AKL value - which is 30 points. I chose the option to replace current reservation if waitlist comes through. I was under the impression that if the waitlist comes through, it would simply replace the current one and 8 points would go back in my 2016 Dec UY (assuming its 30+ days out).

A friend just told me that its never really a "replacement" that they will borrow the 30 points from my 2017 contract to book the waitlist, then cancel the current reservation of 38 points, which go back in my 2016 Dec UY. That doesn't seem logical to me, but if that's the case, I will cancel the waitlist as I don't want to touch my 2017 points. As long as its 30+ days out I could then bank those 38 2016 points if I'm within my banking guidelines - correct? This seems way too complicated for what I thought was simply replacing a reservation! Someone set me straight!

It's supposed to work they way you expect. They have been known to screw it up the way your friend described, but if they do, you cam make them fix it.

This is what is supposed to happen.

This should not occur unless the CM that creates the actual reservation makes a mistake.

What your friend said can happen - it happened to me. I called when I noticed what happened and the first CM basically said sorry - that was the way it was done. I had to get a supervisor on the phone who fixed it.

Just watch your points after the waitlist fills (if it does) and then call member services to fix any mistakes.

It happened to me also - I was so utterly frustrated becaue even after being transferred to a supervisor they would NOT change it back. They kept claiming that they could see on their end that I cancelled the 1st reservation & made a new one with all borrowed points. Which to me doesn't even make sense because if I made any reservation wouldn't it use my current points first, then borrow the remainder? Maybe I'm confused on the process but they were adamant that I physically cancelled the original & re-made the new one. I even had the confirmation emails showing that my waitlist had come through but they said it didn't matter. I had one night waitlisted & it took all the points for the new night from the next year, and put the old ressie points back in my current UY, which was past the banking window, so I ended up eating them. It was only 9 points but still - it borrowed 17 from my next UY when it should have only been 8 from that & 9 from the current ressie that was being replaced. Had it been more I would have fought tooth & nail, but I had already wasted so much time on the phone with them over it I let it go. Or obviously I didn't let it go as I can feel my fingers typing fast & furious about it right now LOL!!

So be sure to check carefully if your waitlist comes through!

Emailing them about this is probably a better way to go than talking to someone who is putting up a road block against fixing a mistake for whatever reason. Then you can outline exactly how it went.

Wow! When did this happen to you?

We had a waitlist filled recently, but the existing reservation was not cancelled. Good thing we had some current points left, because if it had borrowed points, we would have been very upset. We started a thread about this, and several others mentioned the same thing happening to them.

I would hate for this to become a fairly common problem. Would really undermine confidence in the waitlist system. Perhaps a bunch of new CM's? Or maybe one or two specific CM's working on waitlists that need some re-training?

Mine was last December. It really puts a bad taste in my mouth that this happened to someone else - I wish I would have fought harder for my stinking 9 points I lost!

The CM and/or supervisor should definitely have fixed it for you, especially since you had the email confirmations.

I agree with Kat that emailing might get a better response. Here's also the DVC member satisfaction email address in case anyone is interested:

dvcmembersatisfactionteam@disneyvacationclub.com

I think everyone experiencing these issues, especially if you don't get a good response over the phone, should email them so that they are aware of and can address the issue before too many other members are negatively impacted.
