We are new to DVC and I thought I would ask this question for a better understanding.

We were placed on a wait list on 8/15/15 for a 1 BR villa at SSR since that would be the easiest place to get a room in October of this year. I checked the DVC website daily for any resort that was available for our dates in October (10/28-11/2). Yesterday 8/19, when I checked I found a 1 BR villa at SSR for the full stay dates we wanted. The question I have is, why didn't the wait list get fulfilled if the room was available for the dates that we wanted?

obviously I took the room and canceled the wait list!

No idea.

I had a similar situation a few years ago. Wanted to do a split stay; half at SSR and half at BWV so I could attend a business conference at Swan & Dolphin. Had to wait list BWV but I kept checking and one day noticed my dates and room were available so grabbed it. DVC couldn't tell me why the wait list didn't activate. Didn't give me a warm fuzzy about the system.

One of the frustrations with Disney/DVC is that they don't provide you with any info on how or why they do things. You will learn that with DVC, we as owners/members just go along for the ride.

In the past we had evidence and conflicting info from CM's on how the waitlist system worked. The most popular assumption is that the match was run after hours and a CM would manually process the reservations starting the next day. Often that meant that during the day, the inventory could be snatched up by other members.

Recently there have been reports that the match has been running during the day and that the inventory was held waiting for the CM to manually work the reservation. Sometime you will be notified that you matched, sometimes you will notice in your account that it happened.
