Waitlist Question

I am currently out of points for this UY but I have 8 more points I can borrow from next year. I want to book a reservation in Oct that would be about 30 points so can I put in a waitlist request for Boardwalk and then just tell MS if it comes through to borrow those 8 points and charge me the rest on those one time purchase points (I know I can get up to 25)?

IS that doable or do I need to already have the points to put in a waitlist?

The 8 points would certainly automatically get borrowed (you need to give permission at the time of waitlist). I am not sure if you can use the one-Time-Use points for a waitlist. If you can't, maybe you can purchase 22 points and use them on your exisiting reservation and then you would have those points for a waitlist. Agian, I am not sure they will let you do that either.

FYI - it is 24 points you can purchase, not 25. That extra point does not appear to be an issue in your scenario.

from the member site:

As a Disney Vacation Club Member, occasionally you may find yourself in need of just few extra vacation points in order to book that perfect dream vacation. Previously, this required borrowing vacation points from a future use year, but very recently a new alternative was introduced. They're called "one-time-use" vacation points and are available for a fee of $15 ($13.33 plus $1.67 tax) per vacation point. Availability of one-time-use vacation points may be limited or suspended from time to time, and the fee is subject to change.

Details:
One-time-use vacation points are vacation points available for Disney Vacation Club Members to use as an alternative to borrowing vacation points from the following use year's allotment.

You can obtain a maximum of 24 one-time-use vacation points once per use year per membership.

A maximum of 24 one-time-use vacation points are processed in a single transaction, not multiple transactions.

The fee for one-time-use vacation points is $15 (including tax) per vacation point, and is subject to change.

One-time-use vacation points expire according to the use year of the reservation booked and are non-refundable, non-transferable and cannot be banked or borrowed.

One-time-use vacation points are not available for waitlist reservations.

One-time-use vacation points cannot be applied retroactively to existing reservations.

One-time-use vacation points are only available for Members whose contract is closed and in good standing.

One-time-use vacation points are available only for Disney Vacation Club Resorts, Disney Collection*, Adventurer Collection* and World Passport Collection reservations.

* Available when you purchase directly from Disney.

One-time-use vacation points used for Disney Vacation Club resort reservations can only be used up to 7 months prior to arrival.

One-time-use vacation points for Disney Collection, Adventurer Collection and World Passport reservations can be used according to the booking guidelines for each individual collection.

I believe it would be within your rights to just purchase 22 one-time use points up front, and then create the wait list with the other 8 earmarked for borrowing if the WL is filled.

As chalee94's post states, you cannot make the one-time use points contingent upon the WL being filled. However, you should be able to buy those points now, have them allocated to the current reservation, and then create the wait list with your remaining owned points being applied if the WL comes through.

But what if the wait list does not come through.

Yup, that's the risk.

If the owned points which are freed-up can be banked, that's an option. But there may come a decision point in which OP will have to bail on the wait list and bank those points if the desired resort hasn't come thru yet.

Guess it depends upon how desperate one is to at least give the wait list a try.

If you look at the restriction just below that they can't be used for a waitlist you see the restriction that they can't be applied retroactively to an existing reservation. If you could buy the points without a reservation (which I think others have said they couldn't do) then you would be completely risking those points if the waitlist didn't come thru or you couldn't use them prior to their expiration.

OP - did you check to see if you just reserve the room you want at the member cash rate?
