We would some day like to get a camper. Gas mileage is a major factor on whether we get one. In the past we have traveled with two mini vans @ 18 mpg. It would have been nice if we could have all traveled together (7 of us), that could be justification that we could do the RV thing. On the other hand, the kids are getting older and may have there own familys and not go with us. Currently we tent camp, we pack an air conditioner.

I am really interested in what the mpg our for different types of camping shelters
RVS
5th WHEELS
POP- UPS (include what type of vehicle is pulling it.

Thanks

I have a 31' Cougar Toy Hauler. My Silverado Crew Cab (diesel) get's about 18empty but it goes to 10-11 mpg when towing the camper. I just quit watching mileage though because we're going to go to certain places each year and you might as well just plan on spending a lot on fuel. One thing I do is put it on 65 on the interstate. I'm not sure if there's a big difference between 65 and 70 but my truck runs 2000 rpm at 65 and that seems to be a good rate for a diesel.

We have a 30' TT GVW is 9,600 that we pull with a Ford Excursion V10 and we get 7.5 to 8 depending on how fast DH drives. If he keeps it around the speed limit we can get 8 but that extra 5 or so miles over drops it down. :sad2:

Also, that is mostly in this area where we have a lot of mountains. I am sure it would go up of we were where it is flat.

Hope this helps!:goodvibes Good Luck! :thumbsup2

We have a Chevy Tahoe and a pop up. The pop up is very small (8ft Jayco that sleep 5). The pop-up is so light weight that it didn't affect the milage very much at all. We got about 14 mpg a couple of weeks ago going from Oklahoma to FW. you could carry 7 passengers, luggage on top and in the camper itself. If you need more room, you could always throw in a tent and have the kids sleep in it.

29' Fleetwood Tioga class C we averaged 7.25 mpg round trip to Fw. Speed does make a difference, at 65 mph with me driving we get 8 mpg or better but with hubby driving we get 6-7. As my Dh would say bad milage for a car  but for a house full of kids not bad.:)

Our Kiwi 21C weighs in at about 5200 lbs wet. I pull with a Ford F150 Supercab with a 5.4L V-8. Without the trailer, we get 18 mpg. Towing, I get between 11 and 13 mpg.

We have a 35' class A National RV Seabreeze Bus with an ISB 260 Diesel engine and usually average about 10 mpg. A little less than that if we tow our Jeep Grand Cherokee.

We have not figured our mpg with our new camper yet as we have not taken a trip in it yet. Our last camper was a Aero Cub 19BH that we pulled with our Chevy 1500LT van. Our van gets between 14 and 18 mpg not pulling, but pulling brings it down to 10-11. Hilly areas will get ya less mpg when towing.

Before this setup, we towed a Fleetwood Americana Colonial popup with an Astro. The astro got 18-22 mpg w/o it and 16 when we were towing. Our popup slept 8 of us fine, but snug.

If you are concerned with gas mileage, a popup is the way to go. Trailmanor also makes a fold down trailer that is light and low profile. We loved our time in our popup. Sure do miss the gas mileage as well.

Happy Camping!

We have a 33 ft trailer and pull it with a GMC K2500 8.2L ext cab truck. We get 11-12 mpg pulling or not. :lmao:

We have a 2500 hd,6.0 gas, lwb, crew cab.,that is not our daily driver.Nice to get in it after a week or 2 and it still has a tank of gas,,,.We pull a 31 bunk house dual slide jayco tt.When not towing, get 11-15mpg.When towing ,with a golf cart in the truck,"DOOM BUGGY"at 65 mpg avg 8-10mpg.I am heavy, but we are not going to the mountains,we camp mostly in the south, and 75% in florida.Big oil will NOT limit us, we will plan for the extra $ . Enjoy your search. Also look at rv.net. ,very informative site.pirate:

F150-5.4L V8.
Pulling an outback 26rls.....

Lets put it this way..I can fill up with 50.00 and leave Jax., and get to about 1/4 of tank left by the time we get to b-line express way....

I have a 04 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab with 5.7 litre Hemi V8 and pull a 30 foot Jayco ultra-light travel trailer. I get around 18 or 19 on the highway normally and pulling the trailer, it drops down to around 11 or 12 on mostly flat roads. Take a trip to the mountains with a lot of up hill towing and it goes down to 8 or 9.

Pull with a Dodge Ram 5.9 V8, Extended Cab Long Bed 4x4. Pull a dutchmen 29ft TT about 6700lb loaded and average 6-8 mpg pulling mostly in the mountains. My new diesel should bump that up to 13-15 mpg.

we have a 30 ft homestead fifth wheel and pull it with a f250 7.3 diesel we get about 12 mpg towing and around 14 mpg not

I have a 32ft fifth wheel, fully loaded weighs between 10,000 and 11,000 pounds. I pull with an F350 crew cab dually 7.3L diesel 6 spd manual with 4.10 gears. We averaged 9mpg on our just completed trip to Ft. Wilderness with 6 people in the truck.

We Have A 33ft Motorhome And It Gets About 7 Miles To The Gallon. I Wish I Could Leave It In Storage In Florida And Pull It Out When We Go To Florida

In '05 we had our Dodge Ram Quad 1 ton diesel, pulling a 36' Carriage fifth wheel from Michigan to FW - as low as 10.5, as high as 12.2 mpg. This year we have a '06 Fleetwood 39' diesel pusher class A, as low as 6 and as high 8 mpg and that was pulling our golf cart in a 7x10 enclosed trailer.

Thanks you so much everyone. We camp about 5 days of our 14 day trips to Florida. I think we should look for a pop-up for now. We could pack our stuff in it which would leave room for more passengers. We packed stuff on top of the van one year and that caused the gas mileage to go down from 18 to 15

Last year we took two cars. It was very crowded for 6 passengers and all the luggage and camping supplies. BYW, the kids were 15yrs old and over.

Thanks for all the information
