Wahines on Tour - Hawaii and peek at Aulani! LAST DAY IN THE SUNSHINE UPDATE 8/6

Just to let you know- we have six players, and I am compiling your answers - I'll post your answers as they show up here - thanks for playing!

A shopping day! :cloud9:

Tell me about waking up at the wrong time - central Europe is 6 hours ahead, so even though we only have a few hours of sleep we are up at 4 or 5 in the morning! Just the first few days, but it is annoying. :lmao:

Sorry about the rain, sounds very ............. WET!!!!!!! but it looks like you had fun anyway. ;)

I LOVE reading about your military things. To someone who has no connection, especially here in Europe this is so interesting. Thanks for widening my horizon!

Well, where were we? Oh, tasting that Mai Tai and feeling the Island inhabited by tiny Hobbits driving caboosies to the shopette. :rotfl2:

As long as the hobbits aren't drinking the Mai Tais before driving the caboosies. That would be bad. And it's hard to get rid of a bad hobbit.

I was going to say, "It's hard to kick a bad hobbit". But that's just mean.

With Hawaii being 2 hrs behind us on that day, I woke up at 3:45 am the next day - wide awake.

With Hawaii being two hours behind you that day, were you always looking over your shoulder checking to see if it was catching up?

Much later when Jim had left and the sun started coming up, I joined my friends out on the balcony and watched the base wake up -

Cute pic of the birds. :thumbsup2

complete with the Star Spangled Banner, which plays every morning at 8am, along with Revele. At that time, anyone outside must stop walking and talking - if you are in uniform, you must stand at attention. If you are driving, you must stop your car. Since I was in my jammies, I just snuck back inside ;)

That's cheating! Actually, not being military, I find that quite interesting.

The part about the anthem, not you and your pjs.

Not that there's anything wrong with you and your pjs..

I'm going to shut up now.

Our thought was just to check out the store, buy a few groceries for the week, and be back about noon - invite one of the other wives to go to lunch. Ha! This turned in to an all day event!

Ah. Shopping. It's really more of a sport than a chore, no?

We were in shopping deprived heaven!!! (you have to understand - we have 4 stores here - Ross, WalMart, KMart and Fred Meyer - like an upscale Walmart)

And many, many frustrated ladies, I'm betting.

They call flip flop slippers in Hawaii.

:lmao: Do you have any idea how long it took before I realised that's what all the guide books were talking about? I kept reading how everyone wears "slippers" in Hawaii. I was like, 'What????' :confused3

We saw a little break in the rain and ventured outside to a tent where they were selling Hawaiin plate lunch - pulled pork with Hui Hui sauce, macaroni salad, sticky rice, and tossed salad. Yum!

That sounds good! Do the plate lunches normally have sticky rice? I've read that it's normal to have rice, but I wasn't aware that it was sticky rice... if it is.

We ducked into the MWR tour office (MORALE, WELFARE AND RECREATION)

Well, if you have inebriated hobbits who insist on driving their caboosies all over the island, it's a good thing you have a Morals office. Maybe if they knew it was wrong they wouldn't do it?

Oh. Morale. That's different.

Nevermind.

As we took about 10 steps, the heavens opened up, and it was just like someone dumped a huge bucket of water over our heads - not just stepping into the shower with your clothes on, but BUCKETS!!! The water was up over our ankles by the time we reached the car 100 ft away.

:scared1: Wow! Did anyone start building an arc, by any chance?

NEXT: Kidnapping

Oooh, that sounds interesting... or ominous... thanks for the chapter! :goodvibes

Oh yes, you have a huge time difference to get over!

Oh, it was wet, but Jim kept reminding me we weren't shoveling snow and we were in HAWAII!!! :cloud9:

I'm glad the military stuff is not boring you. Thanks for the feedback!

somehow this makes more sense than what I said :hippie:

Ah. Shopping. It's really more of a sport than a chore, no?

shopping would not be a chore for most women, under any circumstance.

And many, many frustrated ladies, I'm betting.

::yes::

:lmao: Do you have any idea how long it took before I realised that's what all the guide books were talking about? I kept reading how everyone wears "slippers" in Hawaii. I was like, 'What????' :confused3

:rotfl2:

Yes, most do. Sticky rice is just rice to them. After living in Okinawa, it is just rice to us, too. The long grain kind just isn't the same anymore. :goodvibes

Well, if you have inebriated hobbits who insist on driving their caboosies all over the island, it's a good thing you have a Morals office. Maybe if they knew it was wrong they wouldn't do it?

Nevermind.

:lmao:Well, maybe not - there could be a connection between good Morals and good morale..:rolleyes1

:scared1: Wow! Did anyone start building an arc, by any chance?

Oh, that is just a normal afternoon shower...

Oooh, that sounds interesting... or ominous... thanks for the chapter! :goodvibes

Thanks for posting! I am :rotfl: and enjoying your comments so much!

I'm late but I'm in. Love the military lingo...brings back my time in the Army. :)

Sorry to read that speculation is driving home prices up in AZ. Hopefully you'll be able to find something reasonable.

All I know about military lingo I learned from Beetle Bailey and M*A*S*H.

With a washout of a day like you had, you might as well spend it shopping I suppose!

im here, how did i miss this one?

am i too late for the game? did i already miss a question?

I'm here with my lawnmower............where are the grass skirts?????? :rolleyes1
nice marv, really classy and nice

Thanks Glenn! I know we will find just the house we are supposed to have. We just might have to be patient.

Well, I can't think of a bad time to go shopping! ;)

Dan! I wondered where you were - oh yes, getting your haircut for a very good cause! I did close the entries, but I haven't posted an answer yet - just about to in my next update or so - hurry and answer and the rules committee will add your answers to the mix! There's a chapter link for it.

(feels so powerful to be on the rules committee :goodvibes)

Happy Monday! I am happy it's Monday and work is over, because Jim is on his way home tonight!:yay:
ahh no offence.. but Mondays SUCK! I can see how you would like it though with Jim's homecoming.. but they still suck LOL

I was realizing that our arrival day's activities won't give anything away, so I think we'll get this party started! Some of you have submitted answers to the game - thanks for playing! The winner gets King/Queen for a day, and maybe a little something else. :rolleyes1 It is a really close match so far! (but of course the answers are pretty much yes or no.:goodvibes Remember there are bonus points for creative answers)
oh if i get queen can I have the day off from work.. especially on Monday!

We're in Hawaii!!!! :yay::yay::yay:

Our Travel day, Monday, March 5th dawned really cold, 22 deg, but no snow!

I was afraid we wouldn't hear the alarm clock at 3am, so I set 3 alarms! Michelle told me she did the same, and had me call her to be sure she was up!:rotfl2:
HA I do the exact same thing LOL

And then there were the gate lice, whose boarding number hadn't been called, but they were crowding the area so the ones who were called couldn't get through. I just don't understand that mentatility. :confused3
LOVE that term! ugg they piss me off too

I had upgraded when I checked in the day before to an extra leg room seat, and then didn't get a seat assignment. The gentleman who assigned me a seat here in podunkville said he was giving me a nice window seat. Well, it was an exit seat on a 777 my lucky # (just 1 not all 3 LOL) with a big door but no window! I really love to watch us fly in to somewhere new. Im the same way She even bought me a drink for being a military wife!:goodvibesTHAT is worth it all!!!!

Before we knew it, we were landing in Honolulu!!! ALOHA!!!

Just so you don't think the tax payers are paying for 5 star resorts, here are our accomodations - I AM NOT complaining - it was clean and comfortable and FREE! We were staying at Hale Alii, which is a hotel with laundry facilities, a microwave and fridge and a lanai with a computer station, and a BBQ grill and deck.
hey now for some of the dirt holes (some literally some figurativly) our military has had to sleep in before. A temp home like that IS 5 star.. and I think they all should have regular rooms that are 5 star like!!! but maybe im just byass

The Bathroom was so small you had to step outside the door to use the hair dryer! :rotfl2:
HA we used to have a bathroom like that in military housing.

Once we got unloaded and into our rooms, Jim had to go back to work
all work no play?

As soon as I kicked off my shoes, Michelle called and said Jesse wanted to go to the pool, and did I want to have a drink to get vacation started? Well, it was 5 O'clock in Oregon by then, so why not?
THAT MY GIRL!!! :thumbsup2

and over to the shopette ( you are going to learn all our lingo here)
WOOHOO I may not know Starboard vs port side on the ship but boy do i know me some military talk/abreviations.
It is like a convenience store.
Ok maybe I will learn some new stuff too cuz the Marine Corps calls it a 7day store LOL

We relaxed on the lounge chairs and the tone was set for the vacation - it started to rain.:umbrella: We moved the chairs back under the gazebo and continued to enjoy our drinks.Atta girl!!!

Next: The first Mai Tai is the best Mai Tai!

On Waikiki, it's Hale Koa! We had heard that the best Mai Tais on the island were here, so we had to find out! :drinking1
Im with Kara.. are there ever BAD Mai Tais? really...? maybe empt ones.?

We hopped into the car and headed downtown. With no traffic it takes about 15 min to get to Waikiki,
was that Hawaii time..? lol

and found our way to the KoKo Cafe. There was a long line at the podium out in the hall for seating. It was all senior citizens. We went up to the front to see if we could look at the menu, and the lady at the front of the line was glaring at us!
my thought is.. old people get mad about being cut in front of cuz they are thinking there time is a ticking.. too morbid? LOL sorry :(

 Wayne piped up with, "Don't worry, we're just looking at a menu - you're next!"
I like Wayne!

Jim didn't get to take the taste test, because he was our DD, but he was willing to take our word for it! Cheers!
Oh he is just like E.. not even a sip when he's a DD... good for them.. more fun for us!

We wandered around exploring the hotel a bit, looked in the gift shops and then decided it was time to call it a night. An employee had told us that we should wait near the taxi line for a "Caboosie" So Jim asked the valet about the "caboosie" He waived us over to the left - another valet came over and asked if we needed a cab. Wayne asked if this was the caboosie line, and the guy waived us off
maybe the "CABOOSIE" is the ride you take when you get back to your room after a few of those world famous Mai Tais :rolleyes1

Next up- Buckets and Buckets

Hi everyone! I'm back from a week of wonderful glorious sunshine to find us driving home in a snowstorm. :headache: I will be so glad to be living where it's warm - okay HOT!:cool1:
ahh Sunsine ive been wondering where our has been in Cali...

I'll be back to get on with our tour, going to go out and grocery shop right now - We took in a Padres/DBacks game - perfect day! We had 4th row seats at a Suns/Spurs game, thanks to the new boss :yay:
how fun! Go Padres!

We did some house hunting, and learned that investors are scooping things up so fast and driving the prices up enough that we will probably just look at new construction - so that decision is yet to be made. Had a great week though. Hope yours was as well! See you Real Soon!
aww man well im sure you will get something perfect for you guys!

With Hawaii being 2 hrs behind us on that day, I woke up at 3:45 am the next day - wide awake. That did not make me happy -
oh that is NO BUENO!

complete with the Star Spangled Banner, which plays every morning at 8am, along with Revele. At that time, anyone outside must stop walking and talking - if you are in uniform, you must stand at attention. If you are driving, you must stop your car. Since I was in my jammies, I just snuck back inside ;)
I am always amazed by the joy I feel when Im on base and that happens.

Eventually, Michelle called and asked if I wanted to go to the comissary, which would be the grocery store and to the BX,(Base Exchange)
and the Marines call it a PX (Post Exchange). We also call it a commissary.. actually I call it the place you never venture to on payday!

which would be the everything else store to AF folk. Shopping at a discount - no discount.. Just tax free!.. hmm maybe discount sounds better LMAO. Not sure about yours but our PX's/BX's always were stocked with Name brand crap.. so your paying the full price of name brand stuff and just not paying the tax.. still way to expensive for my blood (and we wonder why our lower ranks were always in debt.. hello they are buying Guess, Abracrombi and Coach. Sorry end rant, off my box:

We were in shopping deprived heaven!!! (you have to understand - we have 4 stores here - Ross, WalMart, KMart and Fred Meyer - like an upscale Walmart) no TARGET??? omg what about the new area in Arizona whats that shopping like? (thats always the 1st thing I look for when we move LOL)

During all this time, the rain was pouring down! We saw a little break in the rain and ventured outside to a tent where they were selling Hawaiin plate lunch - pulled pork with Hui Hui sauce, macaroni salad, sticky rice, and tossed salad. Yum!
sounds delish

We finished our shopping and made our way outside. It was raining so hard you could only see about 10 feet in front of you. We ducked into the MWR tour office (MORALE, WELFARE AND RECREATION)thats what our is called too.
to inquire about luaus in the area, and to ask about where to meet our tour on Thursday. this

NEXT: Kidnapping

I'm glad the military stuff is not boring you. Thanks for the feedback!
not me I feel right at home!

Cant wait to read more.. I will try and be better I promise, just feels like I am always running like a chicken with my head cut off... had I wont the lottery last week I would have more time sitting at my beach house with Sven my personal massuse and Wolfgang my chef while, Melinda the nanny takes care of the boys, while Gustav give E a workout! LMAO oh if only:rotfl2:

Hi there :) I just found your report from someone else's TR on the cruise board, so I had to check it out. I would love to go to Hawaii - hopefully some day :) It is unfortunate that the beginning of your trip was so rain filled, I hope it got better for you!

DREA! Welcome back - I know how it is to be so busy when you have kiddos at home! When you catch up, it's in a big way! :cool1:

You had me :rotfl: at some of your comments - the one about old people - Ha!

If you are the queen, I'll come down there and work for you :goodvibes Well, maybe not - I don't even know what you do!:rotfl2:

"Caboosie" - :lmao: might be true...you know how it is with TDY's :rolleyes1

aww man well im sure you will get something perfect for you guys!

Thanks! I know it will all work out.

I'm glad the military stuff is not boring you. Thanks for the feedback!
not me I feel right at home!

It's fun to hear the differences for you. I did notice all of the name brand stuff - not as much "regular" items as there used to be 30 years ago! I still felt like the prices that were there were better than some of the stores - and I found a bunch of clothes for the grandkids at really good prices - but they were'nt name brands.

Cant wait to read more.. Oh, that would be the life! I think we all dreamed on that one, and then our hopes were dashed, and we had to go to work the next day. :sad2:

Hi there :) I just found your report from someone else's TR on the cruise board, so I had to check it out. I would love to go to Hawaii - hopefully some day :) It is unfortunate that the beginning of your trip was so rain filled, I hope it got better for you!

Hi and Welcome! :yay: I hope you enjoy the TR and that you do get to go to Hawaii. I am definitely wanting to go back again when it's not the rainy season!

Let's see - we had finished our shopping, drove the Ark back to the hotel and brought our bags in to the hotel and put away the groceries. The boys were home and we had a few hours until dinner time. I wanted to check out the time for our Thurs tour - we hadn't gotten the answer at the Navy MWR - the tour was booked at the Air Force MWR - and Jim wanted to look for a shaker cup for his protein shakes , so more shopping was in order

About that time, we realized that it might be nice for Wayne and Michelle if we took Jesse with us :rolleyes1 Jim called Wayne and said, "Send Jesse down here with the car keys- we'll take him out exploring with us. Jesse was knocking on our door in about 2 minutes. :lmao:

We headed out to Hickham Air Field, which is connected to Pearl Harbor - and over to the MWR office. We got the information we were looking for, and then went over to the BX - to see how it compared. It was pretty small, but they had a large electronics section upstairs. Jim and Jesse checked that out while I found the kitchen items and a cup that sort of worked. I got a corkscrew for my wine also.

Then we stopped in the food court for a snack. Jesse was really shy for a little while, but we finally convinced him to eat a slice of pizza. He is a 16 yr old boy - we knew he had to be hungry. Jim and I each had a scoop of frozen yogurt

We drove around the base and checked out a bunker from WWII
IMGP3484.jpg

IMGP3486.jpg

We got near a little bay, and there was a Navy boat moving really fast - I couldn't get a pic on first try because it was moving so fast. Further along the road, it slowed down enough to get a shot
IMGP3488.jpg

This picnic area looks almost under water :goodvibes

IMGP3489.jpg

Water was even standing in the sand

IMGP3490.jpg

I still had to jump out of the car and put my feet in the water

IMGP3492.jpg

So our errands done, we started back home. Just as we drove up, Michelle called Jesse to ask where we were - I said, tell her we kidnapped you! :lmao:
We made plans to head out for dinner

NEXT: IT MUST BE THE BOOZE AND AULANI

Inspite of all the rain it sounds like y'all were making the best of your time there. :goodvibes

Did it ever clear up and let the sun shine?

Even with the rain the beach looks beautiful! And I love the photo of you, walking along the beach. :thumbsup2

We returned poor kidnapped Jesse to his parents and we all discussed where we wanted to have dinner. The boys had heard from several other guys that Dixie Grill just up the road had great food and happy hour! :drinking1 so Dixie Grill it was!

We drove up and it looked promising, cuz usually "hole in the wall" places are great!
IMGP3496.jpg

It was a BBQ and crab shack, and advertised crab on the sign, so it sounded promising.

We went inside, and it had that rustic, "down home" feel to it, and it was indeed happy hour! :thumbsup2 We were given a basket of popcorn to munch while we perused the menu.

IMGP3494.jpg

Can you see the size of the drink on the table next to Jim? That is my Mai Tai! With it being happy hour, there were $4 appys, and $2 beer. I wanted a Mai Tai, and I had a choice of a small one for $6 or a "large size" for $8. Jim said I might as well get a larger one for $2 more. So before I know it, the server brings out this 1/2 gallon mug, stopping to ring a large bell, and a bunch of people start yelling "WHOA- OOO" When she delivered my drink, I asked what the bell was about - "Well, darlin' it's for you and your drink!" :rotfl2: My face was a little

I was happy to see a couple of minutes later that they brought Michelle a $2 beer the same size as my Mai Tai! I said, "Oh, good! Your drink is as big as mine - High five!" She laughed and said we were going to get along great! :goodvibes

IMGP3493.jpg

I think Someone forgot to tell Wayne it was happy hour! :rotfl2:

Our appys came out - Jim and I got peel and eat shrimp - they brought out a big net bag filled with cooked shrimp - it was like boil in a bag, I guess. I think there was also a huge plate of onion rings. We barely made a dent in our shrimp, and they were bringing out our entree, which Jim and I were sharing. Okay, here's where our thinking process broke down.

We ordered Dungeoness Crab - it comes from the Oregon coast, and is sweet and delicious - what were we thinking? Wanting fresh Oregon crab when we are in Hawaii?:confused3:rotfl: The crab was a whole boiled crab, with a side of cole slaw and boiled potatoes. It was not fresh. In fact, it was mushy and stale tasting. I'm guessing either it was freezer burned or caught during mating season or both. Very disappointing, but the Mai Tai was good - :thumbsup2

IMGP3495.jpg

We started wondering why this place was so highly recommended:confused3 We decided it must be the booze! :lmao: Or maybe we should have ordered BBQ from a place named Dixie Grill:confused3

Michelle insisted we stay and finish our drinks since we had them. :goodvibes The Mai Tai really wasn't any more alcohol than a small one, so it was all good. Jesse and Wayne don't sit still long, so they were outside waiting for us, while the 3 of us had a nice conversation over our drinks - Jim's being Iced Tea.

So far, the winner in the Mai Tai category was still Hale Koa from the night before.

Our next stop of the evening was to head further up the coast and check out AULANI!!!:yay:

NEXT: This Must be Disney Heaven :cloud9:

I had to :lmao: when I saw the size of your drink and you described how the server rang a bell to announce it! :rotfl2:
Sounds like a Disney Kitchen Sink! ;)

Sorry about the crab - we would not know what to do with a whole crab in the first place.

Can't wait to hear all about Disney Heaven. Tom has mentioned that in 2014 we "might" even hop over to Hawaii for a week.
I hope he sticks to his "decision" (not that I don't tell him about how nice it must be, ALL the time!)
