This was our first trip to WDW outside of the summer season and all I can say is that Christmas at WDW, and especially while staying at VWL, is spectacular! :thumbsup2

I’ll try to keep this focused on the DVC aspect of our trip, and not make too many mentions of bad weather, heavy crowds, etc. Our trip was from December 23-30..

Check-in: We checked in at 7:30 a.m. and our room wasn’t ready. No surprise there. We checked back a few times during the day and the room was ready at 4:15, which we had planned for. Our requests (non-smoking, upper floor) were met.

We received a 15th Anniversary DVC pin at check-in. It’s a big pin, about 2-3” wide so I can’t imagine actually wearing it. Still, it was another nice memento and an unexpected bonus.

Room cleanliness: Excellent. No unclean dishes, no mildew, no leftover anything from the previous guests. And the maid had created a Mickey Head from three towels and laid them on the master bed for our arrival. We give Mousekeeping an A+ :thumbsup2

Room maintenance: Very Good. No noticeable wear and tear on the furnishings. Had a bad switch on one of the bedroom lamps and the handle on the sliding door was loose. Both addressed quickly with a call to maintenance. I’d give room condition an A- at worst. :thumbsup2

Transportation: Outstanding. Considering how many people Disney had to transport during the time we visited they were simply superb. The boat to MK ran often and we had a 10 minute wait at the longest. Twice it was pulling up just as we got to the dock. The buses ran very smoothly too and our longest wait was 20 minutes once. Most times it was less than 10 minutes waiting for transportation both to and from the parks. We were expecting some longer waits and were very pleased by the expediency of the transportation. Even sharing with FW for EPCOT and MGM and Grand Floridian for AK, everything went as well as possible. Fortunately, the AK bus didn’t stop at Blizzard Beach which always adds 10 minutes or more to the trip. All in all, we’d give the transportation an A+.:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

DIS Meet: I was able to meet up with Happy Birthday Cat after Candlelight Processional one night. It was a short meeting, but very glad to have the chance to meet such a nice member of the DIS family. And always nice to put a face with a name. HBC…a real pleasure shaking your hand. :)

Roaring Fork: This is the counter service food area at WL. This was our first chance to see it after it has been renovated with new menus. All I can say is that they took a good thing and made it even better! By clearing out the space in the food service area, putting windows in the dining area and expanding the outside seating, they really made it more user friendly. And the food menu additions were excellent while hanging onto some of my families favorites such as the personal pizza and chicken fingers. We’ve said it a thousand times, but we really wish that every DVC resort had access to something like this. Specifically, BWV needs something like this instead of just the Spoodle’s pizza window or the food kiosks on the Boardwalk. Great job Disney on the Roaring Fork re-work. :thumbsup2

Parks/Crowds: Yes, they were crazy-crowded, but thanks to the good people on these boards we were prepared for that and mostly did a lot of sight seeing. We didn’t leave our villa before noon on any day and were able to visit the Grand Floridian and BWV to see the decorations. Mostly just took in the sights and went at a leisurely pace. Watched parades and went on very few rides. Had really good meals. Especially notable was Le Cellier for the CP package which was a nice treat for the family. And eating at Liberty Tree Tavern on Christmas Day in MK was just perfect! We also enjoyed a day at Sea World which was properly adorned and a lot of fun.

Parks/Cleanliness: Based on some threads I’ve read here recently, I took special note of park and restroom cleanliness. I must say that I didn’t see any trash in the parks and all restrooms were in very clean condition. Maybe they had increased staff for the traffic but I thought the parks were in great shape from a cleanliness and decorative viewpoint. :thumbsup2

All in all, we had a wonderful Christmas at WDW. We hadn't stayed at VWL for a couple of years and realized how much we have missed it. Again, I must thank everyone who provided advice on how to cope with Christmas at WDW, and wish all of you a wonderful 2007! :)

thanks :) Glad you had a good time and things are still as wonderful as we remembered from our "home" away from home.

I have to tell you. I am sooo envious you got to spend Christmas at the WL.

It is on our someday list.

Nice report; we did VKL a couple of years ago, at Christmas; yes very nice, they do know how to do Christmas. Again, thanks for your report, and two thumbs up for anyone also thinking tha VKL might be the place to stay for future stays during the Christmas holidays.

Don't let it fall off that list. You've got 35 more years to make it! :)

I have to admit that we ran into one lady at the pool who was on her cell phone talking loudly so everyone around her could hear. She was having a miserable time because nobody told her that the weather could be so bad, the parks would be so crowded that they were turning people away a few times during the week due to capacity, and that the Christmas Parade was pre-recorded. So she was having a very un-magical vacation. We felt sorry for anyone who was making their first trip to WDW and wasn't prepared for the crowds and weather changes.

I'm glad to read that you had a wonderful VWL Christmastime vacation. We also had a Le Cellier Candlelight Processional package (earlier in December) and it was the best meal of our trip!

We also loved our holiday stay at VWL 12/10-12/15 and like you thought cleanliness, trasnportation and food at VWL were all top notch.

you are so brave to go then. the crowds would make me go crazy. too many people!!!

but who knows one day I just might.:happytv: :rotfl: :lmao:

yea - some people don't understand that a trip to WDW you need to do your homework first.

I have 2 groups of first timer going this year and boy they are sick of me telling them to check this and that... I also got them books to read.

but if you don't do your homework first - your trip won't be the magical vacation that WDW can be.

sounds like she needs to get a new travel agent.

of course there are also the people who don't listen. my nephew coach was going to WDW for the first time over Christmas this year. He refused to reconsider another time.

Hi Granny and welcome home . I have been waiting for your report! :yay:

It sounds like you had a wonderful time at "Our beloved Wilderness Lodge". How did you like the Candelight Processional and the Osborn Family lights?

I am sorry you did not have great weather while there. We have run into some pretty awful weather there in Dec, but it is a trade-off, right? And what better way to stay out of the bad weather than at WL/VWL?

As I mentioned, we will be at VWL for Christmas next year. We have not spent Christmas day at WDW for about 10 years, so I can imagine it is much more crowded now. We will take your good advice and CHILL!

Welcome home, we missed you!

Hi Granny,

Great trip report.....I agree ....there is no place like VWL at Christmastime.
We haven't actually spent Christmas Day there, but, early December in the past and New Years two years ago (that was our last stay at VWL and we're headed back in just 12 days.......can't wait!!!!!!!) Unfortunately, by the time we get there (13th) all the Christmas decorations will be long gone. Our last few stays have been at BWV and SSR. Glad to hear mousekeeping is up to par and room conditions appear to be good. I think VWL just had a rehab last year, not sure though. When we were at WDW in October we had dinner at Artist Point one evening and enjoyed it tremendously. We also walked through the "new" Roaring Forks and I agree, they did a nice job. While I love the Christmas decorations and ambiance of the holidays at WDW I really can't tolerate the crowd levels, so I think it will be awhile before we venture back during the Christmas week at all. In 2005 we were there 12/10 thru 12/17 and the crowd level was very good until about 12/15, then it started to get crazy. So, when making our reservations for this trip we decided to wait until mid January.....now hopefully, the weather will hold up and not get cold. Sorry to hear you had some bad weather....was it mainly rainy and cool or just a day or two? I may be doing a mini DisMeet myself this trip.......awhile back I talked to DVCGrammy on the boards and she and her family will also be there the same time we are.....we talked briefly about getting together at Roaring Forks for a cocoa or coffee. As a matter of fact, I think I'll PM her right now while I'm thinking of it.

Thanks for the kind words in your post. :) We thought the Candlelight Processional was tremendous and enjoyed it on a cool but dry evening. Gary Sinise did a very nice job...it was his last narration of the season and he commented on how much he enjoys doing it. He was also very gracious in recognizing the orchestra, singers and even the stage production people.

Osborne Family lights? Awesome! :thumbsup2 Having never seen them before, I understand that this is the first year that they've "danced" in time with music. While they were pretty amazing by themselves, the "dancing" part was really something! And they were pumping "snow" onto the street there on a cold night, so it was really quite special.

I'm not quite sure how it is in this day and age that people can be unprepared for weather. I know not everyone has access to the internet, but surely they know someone who could check the 10 day forecast for them. When we went two years ago at Christmastime - we checked and rechecked up until time to leave. The forecasts kept changing, but we were prepared for a big "cool down" and brought clothes accordingly. I was amazed at the number of people who were in shorts and tank tops when the high was around 40 and young children without coats. The Weather Channel even predicts all across the nation for five days or so. So it just seems that being totally unprepared is really unnecessary!

It was a pleasure meeting you as well Granny. I'm still here at the BWV packing up and getting ready to head home tomorrow. It was great to finally meet a fellow Diser who I have shared so many ideas with for so many years. I just wish I had your daughters explain to my children why being at WDW is more fun than being home for Christmas. My kids still want to come down the day after Christmas next year. Happy New Year to all.

Great report Granny. I've been "on the fence" about going down next December over Christmas, but now you've convinced me to go! I've got my 11-month window marked on my calendar and I'm going to go for it. :thumbsup2

Thanks so much for the great report! It sounds like you had a very magical vacation. We love the VWL, and it is especially wonderful when all decorated for Christmas. Glad everything went so well for you!
