VRBO does not stand behind "their" listings. It's no different than an ad in the paper, caveat emptor. If you read the fine print they take no responsibility for anything. So treat those just as if you were seeing them on Craiglist or some other non-official site. FlipKey is similar, but I haven't heard as many horror stories. Frankly, those sites (including Homeaway) are the the last ones I check.
AirBNB (and I have no relation with them, except as a very satisified customer) is great. They actually stand behind the quality of the listing, and the pictures and descriptions I have seen are better. Unfortunately, VRBO has a lot of listings, so you may not be able to find what you want on AirBNB. I've had good luck with local property management companies, too.
