If you wanted to renew your vowels at sea what is the procedure to get the Captain to meet you somewhere on the ship to do this?:love1:

The legalities of the wedding license must be taken care of before your Disney ship leaves her home port. Since our senior officers are not able to perform legal ceremonies, you will be legally married on the ship on Embarkation Day during your scheduled meet-and-greet with your onboard ceremony coordinator, before your Disney Cruise Line ship leaves its home port. You, the couple, will be responsible for obtaining and bringing the appropriate marriage license application with you to your meet-and-greet. Couples are also welcome to take care of the civil ceremony back home prior to sailing. If the couple is already legally married prior to their sailing, the civil ceremony is omitted from the scheduled meet-and-greet.

What !?!

Based on many TV shows and movies growing up, including Star Trek and Gilligan's Island, I thought any captain of any ship, boat or spaceship of any size could marry a couple.;)

But back to reality It looks like they have a real officiant marry you while the ship is still at the dock, maybe as a group and then you have the fancy ceremony after you leave port.

Renewing vows could be a private affair as well... It could be as simple as you each preparing your vows and saying them in a special place with special people, and then celebrating afterward. Maybe having a friend film or take pictures. Just an option :)

But seriously renewing your vows at sea privately together seems very romantic! Great idea! Then maybe celebrate with dinner or something at Palo/Remy!

A long time ago, when people would go to sea sometimes for years at a time, some captains (it was country of origin dependent) were given the ability to marry people on their ships. This was done because if you're in the middle of a 2+ year trip around the world as part of your job, and you happen to meet someone you want to take along with you, and you live in a somewhat repressed time period where children born out of wedlock face a difficult life ahead of them, and you're in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with no land in sight for several weeks, and you need someone to make your relationship legal in the eyes of god and man, who do you turn to? The captain is the ruler of his ship, so the captain is the person given the ability to perform such a religious/governmental ceremony. However, no one does that sort of sailing anymore and the right has been extinguished, except in very specific cases.

If you want any official participation by DCL (participation by an officer, flowers, cake, use of a private room, etc.), you'll have to work through Disney. They see Vow Renewals as being the same as weddings, so the cost structure is the same for both.

Since a vow renewal is not official in the eyes of the law by any means, you don't need a license or an officiant - you're not actually renewing anything to anyone but each other. Pick a quiet spot, say some meaningful words, then go to eat at Palo or Remy. Maybe make a private photo appointment.

An alternative would be to plan something during a shore excursion....there are companies in several of the ports that arrange weddings and vow renewals....

I don't think it was a typo, but I clicked for the same reason.
Yes, I agree because she used the same word twice.

It's kind of like isle...I see someone type that in place of aisle every.single.day...

Basically what ot comes down to is what country will represent you as being married in their country. Since the majority of marriages at sea are in international waters, you can't claim married in the US for example. It becomes a question of legality. I think the only line I know of is Cunard which is why they shifted the QM homeport to Bermuda I think so the capt can legally marry someone.
In DCL'S case you are married at the pier by a notary and your actual ceremony is at a designated time and day. After the ship leaves.
