I'm definately thinking of switching to Vonage for our phone service. It would save us almost $40 a month over our current Comcast service. Does anyone here use Vonage? Are there any signiificant problems with the service? Does anyone have a code or referral link that they could pm me with?

Thanks! :flower:

I've been with Vonage since Dec04, and so far I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever. The voice clarity has been great (actually better than my landline used to be) and really just had no issues at all.

It helps too that I have Roadrunner from Time Warner Cable and they're cable up-time has been awesome. Since Dec04, I've only had one drop due to a storm. Other than that time, roadrunner has always been up.

Billing is fine, no problems on that end either. We got our router within 7 days of ordering the service and I got it hooked up within 15 minutes. I have 4 computers + the phone hooked up to the router and I don't experience a drop in speed, even when I'm downloading large files or when DH is playing multi-player games online.
If you need a referral, PM me your email address and I'll send you one.

I do not have vonage--but there was an article in the paper here in Connecticut stating that there is a problem dialing 911 with this service that because it is broadband the 911 system does not recognize the call and people in Connecticut have had problems using the vonage and dialing 911. Just thought I would let you know

There was no 911 with Vonage when we first had it. Now we have it and all seems fine. Not sure if 911 will have an address come up with the #. When Vonage was able to offer 911 we had to confirm our address with them. So, not sure.

We have had Vonage for about 4 years now. We have moved alot and not having to change our # was a great advantage!! We love it and have never had any problems with it! Love having the same bill every month and we have it debited right out of our checking account every month. It's great and we love it!

I read the article regarding the 911 issue. I believe the issue was that to use the 911 system you have actually go into the vonage web page and configure your information.

I work as a dispatcher for the fire dept and we have had some issues with all the VOIP providers, not just Vonage. In most cases we get 911 calls for places nowhere near us (I'm in Ontario, Canada and we have gotten calls from Arizona and Texas). Usually we take the information and try to pass it along but it takes some time, and we tell the caller to hang up and try to call back on a landline or a cell phone. Even if your provider has a so-called 911 service, its a middle man or answering service and you are usually responsible for the extra sign up and providing accurate information. Your call does not go through the 911 system where we automatically get your address and phone number (in most cases). Read the fine print on this subject very carefully. It might be worth still keeping a landline connected in your house for local calls and for emergencies and using the VOIP for long distance stuff.

If you have young kids, or might have a situation where you need help and can't speak (and who can predict that!) I would carefully consider what is important to you, saving $$ or possibly saving your life. The 911 system was designed for a reason and circumventing that system means you may not get the help you need in a timely fashion.

I'm not knocking the VOIP systems, I just don't think they have adequately addressed the problem of not being connected to the 911 system.

$40/month for phone and internet service?? How exactly does this hookup work? Sounds awesome. I'm paying $75/month for phone and $80/month for cable and internet service combined. I live in a somewhat rural area. Will that affect connection in anyway?

We had it for awhile. While it was nice to have a local number to call dh's family we ended up dropping it. If someone was surfing the web it would interfere with the call. We only pay .03 per minute for long distance so it's a lot of talking to get to $40.

I have Vonage and no problems here. Love that the bill is only $27.95 versus $60.00 with Verizon.

As far as 911 goes, my son knows our address, as do I, so it's not really an issue. Plus I have thin walls, so our neighbors would hear if there was an "incident." I also have the landline phone plugged in (service is disconnected), but that works to dial 911 as well. FYI - ANY phone that is plugged into a jack that is connected to a pole will allow you to dial 911, even if there is no service on that phone (same goes for cell phones).

We also use Skype. We are telling everyone we know about it. One friend now uses it to call his nephew in Japan! It's free, and very good sound quality.

We've been considering Vonage as well. My husband has a former co-worker he still chats with occasionally that he was supposed to ask for a referral but despite me bugging him about it, he hasn't done. If someone could PM me one here I would greatly appreciate it! :flower:

Thanks!
