Volunteering at Give Kids the World.

Hi everybody,

Last year I stayed at Give Kids the World for my sister's wish trip, and had a really amazing time so would love to volunteer after a family holiday next year.

I will be 18 at the time and my family will have returned home to the UK if all goes to plan, but the only issue is finding somewhere to stay. I will not be driving so it ideally needs to be within walking distance of the village, and somewhere relatively safe/cheap!

Does anybody know of anywhere that might be appropriate e.g. a nearby hostel, or even know a family that would be willing to host me for a few days? If anybody could even point me vaguely in the right direction to find something I would be appreciative.

I would recommend staying in a nicer area and using Uber or Lyft to get to GKTW Village. It's not located in a very nice area so I wouldn't recommend walking anywhere near there. Maybe calling the Village and asking if they have any advice?

I'm sorry I can't give you more specific advice. I think what you're doing is awesome, though. I volunteered a few months ago and it was a blast. Good luck!

There's a Howard Johnson maybe 1.5 miles from GKTW, and a few other no-name motels a little further away, but I wouldn't consider any of them 'walking distance' at that point. Also, most of the lodging down in that area of 192 is sketchy at best, I don't think the road that leads to GKTW from 192 has sidewalks on all of it, and people around here drive like they're deranged.

Volunteer Services at GKTW might be able to get you in touch with regular local volunteers who'd be willing to give you rides from wherever you stay? I volunteer over there pretty regularly and I've picked up out-of-town volunteers from hotels before.

But I agree with the others. There isn't really much in walking distance and the area isn't the greatest.

My family and I have volunteered a few times and it is great to do. I hope your sister is doing well.
