Tom Corless over at WDW today is reporting that there has been a Volcano Resort being discussed in the MK area for about a year now, offers a couple different locations ...

Just wondering if anyone else had heard of this (first time I had read it)

Also think it would be interesting given that we have heard a bunch about DVC expansion at Contemp Resort ...

Am I allowed to link the story ???

Yeah not buying this one. There were rumors of fire mountain being revived for MK but those were shot down.

Would Disney really do an volcano hotel or even ride right now, what with Universal opening up a whole new volcano park? Just doesn't seem to pass the sniff test.

Does not make very much sense. I wonder if this rumor comes out of the fact the other rumor was discounted.

that being said, you already have the Polynesian near MK, would you really want another tropical type resort in same general area?

The original concept for the MK resort area had the poly, contemporary, Tahitian, and Asian resorts. So it's not out of the question to have similar themed resorts.

Water park not park ;) no matter what Universal claims it is :)

I don't know why I'm still bothered by people arguing over the status of Volcano Bay. But the literal definition of a theme park is: an amusement park in which landscaping, buildings, and attractions are based on one or more specific themes, as jungle wildlife, fairytales, or the Old West.

If you guys want to make up your own definition that is fine, it still satisfies the requirements of the definition of a theme park.

Sorry. This must be a new pet peeve to add to my ever growing list.

Anyway...I'm kind of surprised that Disney hasn't built more hotels in the MK area. I know there were plans at one time to have a lot more. Did the hotels expand and use up the available space by building their DVCs?

Then Disney should call their water parks theme parks.

To me there is a clear difference between the two. I don't wear a swimsuit to a theme park.

There are probably plenty of pads left around the lagoon to build new resorts. I was under the impression that the entire resort had several occupancy issues over the last decade, and so it made very little sense for them to build new rooms that would be underbooked as well. That having been said, with them considering a Star Wars resort in or around DHS to tie into the new land and be billed as an "experience", I would not be surprised if they were also looking at cloning the idea at other parks with different themes/IP.

In recent years they've had an occupancy issue in the regard that they've had trouble filling rooms. As much as I'd like to see new resorts especially in the MK area, I'm not sure of the likelihood at the moment

At least the volcano ride - with a Moana theme, like from the movie - makes some sense to me .... this one really seems out there

Though, the idea of gondola's seemed "out there" when the rumor first broke

But even with the gondolas we had permit evidence to suggest something was happening.

I don't see them doing a volcano ride or resort around MK at this time. With the money they just spend at AK, the money they are spending at HS and the money they say they are going to spend in Epcot in a few years. If they build any new resorts I think HS area will be where they will go and try to tie it into the new Gondola system.

That's true - just saying the idea of godola's sounded pretty crazy (at least it did to me, when I first heard it) so just b/c something seems crazy doesn't mean it can't happen

It's kinda fun to do the impossible and all that

They might not have an occupancy trouble if the rooms aren't $500 + a night.

But yeah, I've heard all the arguments about the higher cost hotels still being able to make money with empty rooms.

Though to me, I'd rather charge $300-400 a night and have completely full rooms than 1/3 full at $500+

The first pad that WDWNT mentioned between the Contemporary and the TTC was ruled unsuitable to build on. I believe that it was determined that to stabilize the building the supports would have to be deeper than the ones on Spaceships Earth.

Marni1971 over at WDWMagic has confirmed that this is still the case and it's a big bone of contention in the company as it's the perfect pad with MK views and allows a monorail resort to be built without expanding the monorail line. Unless they're correct on the in-park idea (which I don't think they are as that area doesn't provide an easy public entrance which will be required - it can't be theme park entrance only), I think this is wrong.

Believe me you're preaching to the choir here. I'm in agreement 100%. Their economics are so out of whack in my book

I've never seen anything about Tahitian, since that's so close to the poly theme. It was a Persian (could have been backed by the Iranians when they were a free and progressive nation as they were in the early 70s) hotel that was in the only plans I've ever seen for the expansion past the original. Here's the plans/drawing I've seen in a number of WDW history books I've read:

Mainly - I thought you in particular might really enjoy the site if its not already known to you, could well be:)

Ah yes sorry I go to the two mixed up Persian is what I meant to say.

My favorite aspect of the Persian resort is that (at least in one plan) would have had a second monorail look for it that would have gone through Tomorrowland - I think that would have been neat
