Probably a newbie question, but ran a search and didn't see anything.

Does anyone else have trouble with VMK using too much computer memory? When I play it progressively uses more and more memory until the lag becomes terrible (more than 1gb sometimes).

I have to log out/close my browser/log back in. Then its back to normal for a while.

I see this on all three computers in my house.

Anyone else see this/know how to fix it?

Hi,

I ended up buying more memory for my computer and went from1 gig RAM to 2.5 Gig Ram. It has helped.

Bug

It's memory leak. The same thing happens with Toontown. The only remedy for it is to log out and log back in.

Thanks everyone. Glad to know its not just me.

Adding memory is probably the best way to extend the time between log off/on's I guess.

Hopefully they'll clean up the memory leaks eventually though. :thumbsup2

I clean out my temp files after every few games without logging out. It seems to help somewhat.

Oh. And my computer only has 384 MB of total physical memory. Which is why I can't stay logged in for hours and hours at a time.

It is also why the Shockwave "too many castmember..." errors are getting more and more frequent. I used to get those when I had 8 characters showing at once, but now it pops up during a session where I never had more than 1 character on.

Has any one else noticed that characters you have logged off on do not disappear right away anymore?

It's not only VMK that's using your RAM, so the best thing to do is clear up as much as RAM as you can before logging in and if you aren't like the other VMK addicts/no-lifers who are logged in all day, you should have no problem on 1 GB of RAM for a while.

Yep, my computers do the same thing. I even added memory and increased my virtual memory and I still have to shut down and reboot the computer after playing for awhile or the lag gets to be too much to manage. :confused3

I've noticed this too. DD found my character almost 30 minutes after I logged off once. Being new I thought it was just how VMK works. :confused3

Before I log off now I go into a room open only to myself. I don't want to be standing in someones room or public area staring off into nowhere for a long time.

Wow!! I never knew this!! I'm going to try logging out/logging back in next time my pirate games start lagging really bad.

How do you find out how much memory your computer has?

I noticed this when I had my made in the park character on to trade some things to him trying to empty my pockets a little and after I logged him out he was still there a half hour later. I found if I minimize the sign-in window after logging off a character their avatar remains in the game for a long time. But if you close that window immediately after signing off the avatar disappears immediately. This sometimes happens with just one character also when you sign off. My brother has told me I was still on his list after signing out 20 minutes or so before that. If you let the window up or have it open but minimized your character will stay in vmk for a long time. I have experimented with this and closing the window completely puts your mini me to bed for the night.

I usually don't bother with the sign off process, just close the window altogether (usually Pal). I wonder how that affects it.:confused3

For me, log off/on doesn't solve the memory problem by itself. I have to close and re-open the browser (I've tried several browsers). I do log off first, but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have to.

Closing the window does seem to make your character go away, but there is a condition to this. If you have multiple windows open with VMK running, you have to close them all. I suspect that this might actually be the more broad condition of multiple windows open running Shockwave.

Being a quest-a-holic, I drag many of my clones through the quests. I have learned (for me anyway) that after playing 4 characters, I totally close out the window I was using for VMK. Then open one fresh for the next four. That at least avoids the "character memory" error message. (Yes I too, will be sure to put them in one of their own locked rooms before logging them out since I dont want friends who know them.. to think I am being rude by not answering them.)

Then when going to trade from the clones back to main.. I have one window for main, and the second window for the clones. Again, I bring the clones into my room to trade, then log them out and log in the next. Well of course that leaves my room getting filled with clones as they never leave LOL.

So again, after each 4 clones, I will shut down that VMK window, and within 7 seconds, I see all 4 clones disappear! So funny to watch! But sadly necessary to avoid that "character memory" message that is nasty to fix.
