Vittles A Go-Go: Hicks on Holiday - Update 2/14/09, pg 18 COMPLETE!

Hi,

I am loving your dining report and am going to check out your trip report I can definatley understand why you would be excited for the free dining.

Jay and I just got home from WDW this afternoon ... and of course the first thing I had to do once the laundry was started was come on over to the DIS. And now you've done gone and started a vittle re-cap...

Excellent.

I look forward to reading about the rest of your food journey ... especially now that months of sauceless noodles and vacuum sealed tuna fish loom on our Disney-less vacation horizon.

BTW - I blame Norway for everything that didn't go as planned on our trip. Intrigued? Some day I'll tell you all about it. ;)

DisneyMom5, as I always say, "A warped sense of humor is better than none at all"!

Don't I know it! :rotfl:

Love reading your reviews. Please include as much Gluten Free as you can. Thanks.

Thanks! I will mention all of the GF as they occur.
Wish there were more so that it would be more helpful. We are blessed that they can tolerate occasional wheat.

Great thread! I am heading over to the trip report now!

Thanks! Come on over, we love visitors. (AS long as they're not REVENUERS!)

HEY!! We were sitting right next to your at Akershus. Errr...we would have been sitting right next to you if you would have been at that table about a year and a half ago.

Wow. Let's share the moment, shall we. :grouphug:
I think it would be fun to go together. H and John could play. LOL
Though you and I are both such planners...too many cooks in the kitchen, eh?

Loving your food report and your trip report.

We're POP repeaters too. Two trips under our belt and thinking of staying there again. I agree that they really should have child size burgers. My youngest loves a burger with just cheese on it.

We did the Princess breakfast last trip too. I loved the cheese! I can still taste it. Last year for Halloween I insisted my DD 7 be Belle so we could reuse the costume on our trip. I always try to get 2 uses out of the costumes. So we drove from Baton Rouge, LA and hauled the costume, shoes and crown with us. Guess what? She wouldn't even let us take it out of the truck. Thinks she's too old for dressing up. Oh well we still got a good picture with Belle just not in matching dresses.

Keep it coming!:cool1:

Vanessa

I think my 13 would have dressed as a princess if she thought she could get away with it. As it was, I was amazed at the amount of older girls in costumes!
Thanks for reading!

Hi,

I am loving your dining report and am going to check out your trip report I can definatley understand why you would be excited for the free dining.

Come on over, all are welcome! Yeah, Free Dining is almost equally exciting as just being able to book a trip to WDW. Icing on the cake.

Wow. I am extremely flattered that you are back only a short time, and make an appearance here.

Tell me about the Disney-less horizon. I am sick of my own cooking. Blah.
My MIL and FIL want to go to a nice restaurant for her birthday, and I was like :cheer2: . Just want some good food! LOL

That Norway. Vikings are not to be trusted! LOL

Anybody familiar with Veggie Tales?
"We married Vikings, whataya know the terrors of the sea,
Vikings, where ever they go, pillaging happily,
They're Vikings, let there be no ambiguity,
This is the life of a Viking wife,
Pillaging, plundering all their life
When married we...the terrors of the sea."
:lmao:

Looking forward to you finishing your 72 old reports, and starting some new ones! :thumbsup2

I haven't been in the mood to write this week, due to health and personal issues, but I will soon. There's no rush, right?

[If Brenda can take a year, so can I. LOL]

Thanks for reading all!

DisneyMom5, tell me true, would you have gotten mad at me for this? My oldest grandson, over 16 years old, called me and asked me where I had been. I told him I was out winning awards and he wanted to know what for. I have greatly censored myself all these years to conform to his mother's very narrow views of prim and proper but I felt that he had reached the age of reason so I told him the truth. "Grandma won awards for being a 'skinny *****' and the first was much harder to earn than the second." Grandson thought it funny (and a bit shocking cause I have hidden my true self all these years) but dd just about came unglued. Sil would have thought it funny.

I met a family at SS who were looking extremely perplexed and I offered to help, thinking they needed directions, I found that they were trying to figure out what the mom could eat as she had Celiac. She was overjoyed to find out that the chefs at the TS places would fix something special and it was possible to get GF buns etc at the CS. Disney goes above and beyond to make it a special experience for ALL!

we love visitors. (AS long as they're not REVENUERS!)
PM me and I will give you some hints on how to keep your still under wraps. I am an expert in hiding things. I have long hidden Christmas presents in the one place that no one in my family has ever looked - where I keep the cleaning supplies. :rotfl:

I love Veggie Tales. One of my granddaughters used to think that the color red was called "Bob". I am a woman of both profound and profane tastes. :rotfl:

Your report is easy reading. Good writing (especially when from the heart and experience) always is.

Ummmm...I could hear my MIL saying that to my dd13. They would get a good laugh. My kids understand there are words we don't say because they are rude. But they have heard many of them (not all, and not necessarily from us!). I think they are less affected, and less intrigued by them because of it.

[DISCLAIMER - I am NOT recommending swearing in front of little kids, NOR am I recommending allowing little kids to swear.]

No problems with hiding the still, John and I are not handy, so we let other people do the brewing. LOL

My kids used to call the veggie tales Bob and Cucumber. We always thought it was funny they could say cucumber but not Larry. :rotfl:

Going to try to update now, wish me luck!

We had been looking forward to this meal for two years. It was the first ADR I made, just to be sure I got it.

In 8/2005 we had an excellent lunch here, and we hoped to have a repeat this time.

[I must apologize in advance, I have NO pictures of this meal. I guess we were too starving to think about it!]

Because I wanted to do the Princess Breakfast, I scheduled this one for Dinner hour.
They suggested I take an early time due to the size of our party (13) so we got a 4:10 pm ADR.

We arrived at Le Cellier plenty early.
It appeared that many people were still finishing up their late lunches.
As an average meal takes 2 hours, this is not hard to imagine.

We found a corner to stand in and wait, as it was too hot to stay outside, and checked in.
While we were waiting, we saw many walk up parties turned away.

Word to the wise, if you even THINK you might want to try Le Cellier, pick a date and make your ADRs WAY in advance.

The waitstaff came forward, and announced that they liked to start each seating with a tradition. Then they did a lovely rendition of O Canada.

Then the CM at the desk stepped forward to say that their computer system was down, so it would be a few more minutes before they started serving.

So the waitstaff decided to improvise, and did "Canadian Charades" for us.
It was hilarious, and really served to lighten the mood.
Hats off to the ingenious waiter who came up with it!

They finally began seating, but we still had a few minute wait.
In between the Princess Breakfast and Le Cellier, we had only had some ice cream or chips with some snack credits at the Sunshine Seasons food court.

So, we were really hungry at this point.

We finally are seated, given kid's menus and crayons, and our waitress showed up.
She was good, but a little hyper, and told us several times over her spiel about CALGARY.
Yup, I can remember her home province, even though I can't remember her name. :sad2:

Did you know Calgary is home to the largest Stampede in Canada? That actually means Rodeo.

But I digress.

My immediate family had scoured the menus, with the exception of John, and had an idea of what we wanted.
John always finds meat and potatoes, so I wasn't worried about him.
The only stressful thing was deciding on the kid's food choices, and trying to direct the Bionic SIL and kids to good food.

Here is what we ordered:

Appetizers -
John - Prince Edward Mussels, chowder style with potato and bacon

I was shocked that he ordered this, as he doesn't usually get things in shells.
He wasn't super impressed, but did eat it and said it was ok. I tried it also, and the soup type stuff it comes in is really yummy, but the mussels are mussels, and not my fav thing to begin with.

Sarah and Bionic SIL - we both ordered the shrimp cocktail.
I had had this last time, and it was ok, but I couldn't decide what to get this time.
I don't like how they come with the sauce mixed on them.
Well, this time was WORSE, because the shrimp were MUSHY! Blech.
SIL wouldn't eat hers.
In hindsight, I should have sent them back, and gotten something different, but it was very busy in there and you know it would have taken longer to get them, etc., etc.
As it was, we knew we would have enough food anyway.

Mom - She got the mixed greens with pecan shallot dressing.
This is what I should have gotten. It looked fresh and delicious, and Mom seemed to enjoy it.

Disneygirl - Beef Barley Soup.
She has been waiting 2 years to get this soup again. It is the best soup she has ever tasted. And it did not disappoint!

Pocohantas Jr., the Chef, Danger Boy, and Bitsy all had the Cheese Soup.
They all seemed to like it, though P jr. thought it was a bit too rich.

The rest of the kids did not have a separate appy.

Next up: Le Cellier - The Main Course

DisneyMom5, we enjoyed our last Le Cellier experience better than the first. Sounds like you found more to like than not so hooray!

BTW, I was an English major and since I teach kids how to read I am a firm advocate in using erudite, rather than profane words but sometimes, if age appropriate, certain words just are necessary to convey the intent. :lmao: I am the one who carefully taught my redneck grandsons different words to express their emotions in a way that their mother might approve of. Their dad is the one who taught them the other words. :scared1:

I am with you in having others brew your drinks for you however I still think I make a better batch of iced tea than any restaurant, other than DW, ever has. My grandparents brewed and rolled their own. Self sufficient folks they were. :woohoo:

I have done my Lone Ranger run for the week, to the dump, to the dump, to the dump, dump, dump!:rolleyes1

Loving my anniversary present I got myself. The cordless leaf blower is not powerful enough to actually do leaves from the bushes but it is fantastic for a quick and dustless sweeping of porches, sidewalks and even the garage! I love my power tools!!

Did the one CM at Le Cellier do the song in French? Everything sounds more beautiful in French. Merde'!

Slightly Goofy/Linda

Great food reports, I love how the boys couldn't take their eyes off of the princesses :rotfl2:

No, just English. But I was so impressed with the one CM that was switching back and forth between French and English to assist a French speaking guest. I love that about WDW. :goodvibes

Great food reports, I love how the boys couldn't take their eyes off of the princesses :rotfl2:

They are a funny bunch! ;)

Thanks for reading!

Well, the appetizer course was a 50/50 success. Now it was time for the main course.

In hindsight, this went pretty well, but I should have stuck my nose into everyone else's business when ordering, considering I knew the menu by heart after two years of constantly stalking it.

So what does a Hick eat when the restaurant is fancy and the food is free?

John - John ordered the NY strip, with roasted potatoes.
Absolutely NO surprise here.
He must have liked it, because he about licked the plate clean. :rotfl:

Me and the Chef (my son, not the actual chef)- I knew I wanted the filet, because I had had it in '05.
But I had had the lunch version, without bbq sauce.
I was a little hesitant about bbq sauce on such a fine cut of meat.
I KNEW I didn't want the Mushroom Filet, as that's not my thing.
So I decided to trust the chef (the actual chef, not my son), and get the Maple BBQ Filet on cream cheese mashed potatoes.
The Chef (ds11) didn't know what to order, so I told him to trust me and ordered him the same.
After tasting it, he proclaimed it "Love at First Bite!!!" LOL
I was pleased that my kids are starting to appreciate good food.
The sauce on the filet was mild and very subtle.
I was VERY pleased with the outcome and wish I had one of them right now. Mmmmmm....

Disneygirl and Mom - Prime Rib Disneygirl is a real carnivore like her dad.
Last time she had picked out a prime rib/french dip type sandwich, which was on the lunch menu, but no longer.
I told her that the meat in that sandwich was prime rib, so she decided to try the actual thing.
Mom loves good prime rib, and decided to try it also.
It came with roasted potatoes and some sort of green stuff.
The also licked their plates clean. :thumbsup2

Bionic SIL decided to try the Mushroom Filet.
Either she didn't read the menu over well, or she wasn't clear on what risotto was, because although she loved the meat, she didn't care for the risotto.

Poch jr. - she, for some strange reason, ordered the grilled pork chop. :confused3
She didn't want the cabbage it came on, so they asked what she wanted substituted (that's service!) and gave her mashed potatoes.
I wish I could have helped her order, but I was busy with my own kids.
She really didn't care for any of it.

**It's sad when you love a place so much, and you bring someone new and they don't like it, but you know it's just cause they ordered poorly. :sad2: **

Sarah's Soapbox --Right now on the DDP, the kids have the option of ordering a pre-set kids meal,
which they can choose between several sides,
but their dessert is apples or fruit cup,
OR they can choose from entree choices in which they can choose ice cream.
This, is a PAIN!
If one child wants the pizza, and another wants the steak, then the pizza kid gets upset that they don't get dessert.
Sigh.

Anyway, here's what they got --

Dangerboy - He decided to get the kid's steak with fries.
If you are not on the DDP, there is an additional charge for kid's steak, but the DDP waves this.
He liked this very much.

The Inquisitor - He got one of the pre-plated meals, choosing cheese pizza with chicken (? who came up with that),
veggies and dip, and apples with brown sugar.
He didn't complain about anything, so I think it ended up being a big success.

Princess K - She also picked a pre-plated meal of Macaroni with Beef Sauce and Cheese,
steamed carrots and green beans, and a fruit cup.
She didn't eat a lot of it, but seemed to like it.

Bitsy - she ordered off the kid's menu, and got a hot dog, no bun, with french fries.
This was pretty much gone by the time I glanced over at her.
So I call it a success.

Stitch Jr. - No secret here, this is one of the pickiest children I have ever, ever met.
He got the preplated kid's meal of cheese pizza (NO chicken)
with veggies and dip and apples w/ brown sugar.
I think he ate some of his pizza. :confused3

So, for the main course, there was more success than failure. :thumbsup2

I never talked to the chef about food allergies, but was able to pick pretty safe GF foods by myself (as we are ok with trace).
And nuts are pretty easy to avoid in kid's meals.

Now, for a bonus, I will throw in dessert for free! :woohoo:

John and the Chef had the Chocolate Moose/Mousse.
Chef shared with the other kids at his table, as he was full after inhaling that filet.
This worked out good as several of them did not get dessert.
It was a light chocolate mousse, covered with chocolate crumbs and decorated to look like a moose head.
They both seemed to enjoy it.

Me, Mom, and Disneygirl had the creme brulee.
My first experience with this dessert was at Le Cellier in '05.
At the time they had a duo of maple and vanilla creme brulee.
This time it was just vanilla, but it came with a lovely dollop of raspberry sauce, and a crispy rolled cookie.
Mmmmmmm....
Everyone loved this.

Dangerboy and Bitsy had ice cream sundaes.
No complaints here.

Bionic SIL and Poch Jr asked what the sorbet of the day was. It turned out to be Mandarin orange, and it was delicious!

We were all so stuffed that we didn't finish all the desserts,
but we did taste quite a few of them!

So dessert was big success all around!
Thankful that we ended on a good note, we finished up our meal at Le Cellier.

[This is the only place I actually made note of the cost. $260 for my family alone. :scared1:
I think the waitstaff at these fancier places make out pretty good.
I would think it doesn't take anymore effort to serve a $30 filet than it does to serve a $10 burger.
Not that I am complaining.
They worked very hard.
It's too bad they are not including the tip in the DDP next year, as I think the staff will not come out as well.]

We highly recommend this restaurant, both for lunch and dinner, and were pleased that our expectations were met once again.
I recommend researching the menu in advance,
and getting your ADRs early,
because they are booked months in advance
and VERY rarely, if ever, accept walk-ups.

Thanks for reading!

Next up: That Wacky Guy from in the Sky....Cosmic Ray....!!!

DisneyMom5, I do believe that it is a requirement to be an English Major to be on the DIS. :lmao:

I also do not believe that the censors on the DIS know French. Merde'!!!!

I am off on my day. Tuesdays are grueling.

Hope I survive. :scared1:

Oh my land, what a blonde moment! Of course it is. LOL

I hearby apologize to all Canadians present.

She was telling us about Alberta, and her home in or around Calgary, and it was not so much the info, which we always enjoy, but the fact that she told us several times. LOL

Ok, now that we've all had our geography lesson for today....

Thanks for reading and being kind about my senility. :goodvibes

Might I add, in my defense, that before she even mentioned about the Stampede, I said "Isn't that area known for its cattle?"

I DID pay attention in school. Really.
:rolleyes1

After tasting it, he proclaimed it "Love at First Bite!!!" LOL
Awww that's so sweet :goodvibes

I totally agree about the kids meal desserts, why can't they have pizza and ice cream? Surely it doesn't cost anymore to serve pizza as mac & cheese :confused3

Great report Sarah your family obviously had a wonderful meal :)

I am sorry I have not been by in the past couple of days but life gets complicated sometimes. It does not take much to complicate mine though. :rotfl:

I had enough treats for about 350 people and still had to raid my grandkids stash of candy that I keep for them. It was a warm evening and everyone had a good time though. The grownups scarfed down the peanut butter cookies. Life was good.:woohoo:

I simply cannot believe that Disney, in all its wisdom, has not provided better food for the children on their DP. At the prices they charge for their food they can well afford it too. I say that all the children should stage a peaceful protest en masse down Main Street which would attract media attention to the situation!!:cheer2:

DisneyMom5, the further you get away from your school days the more you forget. It is odd the things that you remember though. My brain is selective and remembers what it wants. Unfortunately it is not usually something that will earn me money. :rotfl2: I am font of useless information and great to have on your trivia team though. :teacher: I am with you on my lack of geographic knowledge.

I am loving this report and just imagining your kids and their personalities. If we should ever be at DW again may I please stalk you? Just watching your family would be more than enough for me. Makes me wish I had had one. :dance3:

Slightly Goofy/Linda (off on another day, thinking of buying a new refrigerator even though I do not NEED one, not my usual thing either)

Thanks! We did enjoy it. The TS meals weren't so bad...the hardest meals to get them variety were the CS, but even those have improved over what people were getting this time last year. So maybe there is hope?

We had a lot of trick or treaters also! I was worried I would run out, but when the rain started around 6:30, it did help to cut down the numbers from that point on. Note to self: Next year buy more candy!

You can stalk us any time! :rotfl:
Actually, more grandmas is a good thing. Though, ahem, might I mention you are BARELY old enough to be my mother. :rolleyes1
I just happened to be "old" when I had my kids, especially the last one!
Man, the doctors hate to see me coming!
I am the AMA's worst nightmare on paper -- over 35, many pregnancies, 2 c-sections...Yikes! LOL

Have a great day!

Love your reviews!! :) Sounds like you had a wonderful time! And I thought I had it rough with 3 picky eaters!! ;)

DisneyMom5, I agree with you on grandmas. I am a surrogate mom/grandma to many. That is why I love Halloween cause so many of them come by and a few who do not know where I live are so surprised (hopefully happily so) to see me sitting there. Tickles me to pieces.

I think 'older' parents make better parents sometimes. I know I would have been a whole lot different than I was when I was younger.

I joke that if we ever got broke we could play tic tac toe on my stomach cause I have so many surgical scars. (Yeah, like my stomach would ever be FLAT enough for that)

I have a hubby to take bowling today while I wash the car, do the shopping and then get back in time to take him to his favorite place to eat. Tomorrow I get to go get a load of mulch and shovel it all, taking a break to fix his lunch and dinner. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
