We found out friends will be in Orlando at the same time as we would. Is there any problem with them coming to spend time with us at our cabin? Do we need to notify the front gate prior?

1) No problem, but they can't use the pool(s).
. . . on busy days, they do check for room keys/bands
. . . if not staying at the resort, entry will be denied
2) And, yes, call the guard shack to tell them about the guests(s).

Thank you! No swimming - was just thinking maybe we'd host them for a cookout. In all my visits to WDW, we've never met up with friends so I was at a loss!

Sounds good, but don't stop there with your friends . . .
. . . tour the resort
. . . rent a pontoon boat for a lake "cruise"
. . . rent some bikes
. . . play park games
. . . join/attend other Fort activities
. . . attend the evening (FREE) Chip-n-Dale campfire-Singalong-movie

You bet! We can't wait to show them around so they'll stay there with us next time ;)
