We are travelling to WDW in late January with a 4 yr old and almost 2 year old. I know we'll have at least one day to explore DTD and maybe visit a few of the other resorts. Is this worth doing? We're staying at POP but I've stayed at AKL before and def want to take the kids there, especially if we end up skipping AK. (not decided yet.) But what about the others? I've heard it's fun to visit Fort Wilderness and maybe do the campfire/smores?? Trying to keep our "down day" low key and inexpensive. Maybe ride the monorail just for fun??? (I think my kids would like that?) This is their first trip and my first trip in about 6 years. I've never scheduled a break day so this is new. Ideas????

Yes you can visit other resorts. A suggestion (assuming you have another adult going) is renting a bike at WL and taking it to FW. Our girls really liked it.

I do this often. The camp ground is GREAT for a low key something extra to do. You can visit the horses they use in the parades there and for a low cost fun thing, rent a kayak there.
FW lodge is fun to visit and Boardwalk/Beach club resort area is lovely to stroll around.

Take a boat ride from DTD to Port Orleans and walk the grounds there. It's very beautiful and open. Then take the boat ride back for a free fun thing to do.

Have a great time!

The Boardwalk Inn/Boardwalk Villas is a great resort to visit because everynight they have a Magician, Juggler, Mime and other acts that perfrom from 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM at random locations along the Boardwalk.

I do this all the time and love it. Just remember if you don't have a car, you'll have to go to a park first, then bus/boat/monorail it where you want to go. For instance, if you're staying at Pop and want to go to the Grand Floridian, take a bus to the Magic Kingdom and and either take the monorail or take a resort boat over. We did this last year with our four-year-old niece and honestly, she had such a good time with the boats and monorail and such, it was the cheapest time filler we've ever done. We each picked a favorite resort, where we'd like to eat, and she picked a pool she'd like to swim in for next time we go (oddly she went for the Sorcerer Mickey pool at All Star movies), but it was great. She also liked looking at the decorated campsites at Fort Wilderness. Some of this depends on whether you have a car or not as well. We also enjoyed a fantastic meal at O'Hana that we really didn't plan for. These kinds of days at Disney can be the most fun and relaxing IMHO. :beach:

thanks for the tips - we'll definitely visit some of the other resorts. (will also give us an idea where we might want to stay next time...)
Love the bike idea too. Will see if DH wants to go for a little spin!

If you are interested in doing DTD, take the water taxi down to POR on Wednesday through Saturday night and see Yee-hah Bob. Very entertaining and good for the youngsters as well as the older crowd.

Do the monorail loop; GF, CR, and Poly.

Take the water taxi from DHS to the BC/YC/BW/Swan/Dolphin. My favorite is to go to the BW and get an ice cream cone and sit outside on one of the benches and enjoy the nice weather, before returning home to the cold weather!
