Visiting Catholic Church while on Trip

It's completely appropriate to wear a hat in church. In fact it wasn't that long ago that women were required to have their heads covered in a catholic church My grandma was thrilled when the pope said they no longer had to wear hats, because she never liked wearing them.

My mom used to tell me about this! If she forgot a hat or didn't have one, her parents would make her put a kleenex on her head in place of a hat. Glad they've done away with that rule!

Actually one thing I remember from that Mass, which was on Easter Sunday, was that a lot of women were wearing these crazy looking huge fancy hats.. I thought it was funny... and at the same time kind of disrespectful to be wearing a hat in church..

Women's hats in church are totally appropriate and used to be required as a sign of respect. In many European (and others too I'm sure) cathedrals, you still have to put on a head covering.

We'll be there for Easter and my friend is a practicing Catholic, so I researched a church she could go to for the Sat Vigil...
I wound up with Corpus Christ Catholic Church.
I emailed them for info and they were very friendly.

Yep I remember those days.

George Carlin has a whole routine on religions and the various rules on hats. Those inclined can find the video online easily enough.

As is often the case with comedy, those easily offended should avoid it.

There is also Holy Family that is not that far. But trust me, you want to take her to the Shrine.

There was this one dude . . . I think his name was Paul; he didn't think it was all that disrespectful!
1Cor 11:5-6 said:
But any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled brings shame upon her head, for it is one and the same thing as if she had had her head shaved. For if a woman does not have her head veiled, she may as well have her hair cut off. But if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should wear a veil.
Of course, the same guy said that long hair on a man was a "disgrace," so take from that what you will. :wave2:

Back in the "hat wearing" era, I had a chapel veil for when I visited Catholic churches with friends. Most of the Catholic families had spare chapel veils for guests who didn't have head coverings. They essentially were a circle of lace with a small lace edging and were bobby-pinned in place. Not the most comfortable things, but they did the trick!

When I was little, everyone wore hats to church. Catholic and non Catholic alike.

I have been to Mary, Queen of the Universe a couple of times and loved my experience. It does, however, draw in mostly tourists as it is not a parish church.

We've been to Mass at the Poly (back when they did that--maybe 2001?), Holy Family and Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine. We like the Shrine but a few years ago we wanted to go to a smaller, quieter church. We heard about Corpus Christi in Celebration. We didn't have a car so we called a cab. We had a very nice cab driver who was directionally impaired! :scared1: An hour after we entered the cab, and $60 later he STILL had not found Corpus Christi. He kept calling his base and stating loudly "CORPUS CHRISTI CHUUUURRRCH!" He has a Jamacian accent and he just kept repeating and repeating!!!! We never did find it and ended up at the Shrine anyway. That was the most expensive Mass we have ever been too!!! :scared1:

We've taken our car ever since!! :rotfl2:

Our family does not care for the Mary Queen Shrine, its very overwhelming, and they are constantly asking for money or for you to visit the gift shop.

We have been going to Holy Family the last several years and its a beautiful church, reminds us of ours at home, and is much more comfortable.

I absolutely LOVE Corpus Christi in Celebration. When I have a Sunday free, I always wind up there.

I do not care for Mary Queen of the Universe at all. Yes, it's a gorgeous shrine, but it does not feel like a church. It's ALL tourists, there really isn't a parish community. Whereas Corpus Christi feels like a church and the community is extremely welcoming. I love going to their 5:30pm Sunday night mass, as they have an adult choir singing contemporary christian songs every week.

It's not very hard to find either... It's right on Celebration Blvd, past the town center a few block.

I have had good luck over the years in contacting parishes before my trip and arranging for a member of the parish to pick me up and drop me off.

(Caveat - I don't do this at Disney, simply because I always have a car, and the parish I go to is about 35 miles from WDW.)

I'm happy to hear about this church, we think we might try it this vacation. Last summer we were tied up in traffic FOREVER getting back from Holy Family after Saturday evening mass!! Its always nice to experience a new church :thumbsup2

You're giving away your age Brianna. I remember when ladies were required to wear a hat in church.

Okay, it wasn't really so long ago....chapel veils were required. :littleangel:

I have an app on my phone called Catholic Mass Times. When I type in Pop's address, it shows the closest church is Corpus Christi Catholic Church located at 1050 Celebration Ave in Celebration, FL. It shows it as 2.7 miles away. Next closest one is Mary Queen of The Universe, about 3.7 miles away. Here's the web site for Corpus Christi: http://www.celebrationcatholic.org/

This is a very nice church. Went there last June.
