Does anyone know what kind of offence would STOP a person being able to get a visa to enter the US?

My friend's daughter and her boyfriend were hoping to take a trip to Florida but he applied for a visa and was refused.....he says that it was because of a minor traffic offence.......

We have always entered US on a visa waiver........and when I mentioned this to my friend (she asked me the above question cos she knows we have been to the Us quite often-and our son worked over there for a year) she said that she realised this was the case, although she has never been to US, but doesn't like to ask him WHY he applied for a visa.

To be completely honest my friend and her husband don't approve much of the boyfriend - they think he's a bit shifty - but are staying out of it in the hope that the relationship will eventually peter out.

As far as I know, if you have ever been arrested, you can be refused a VISA and/or entry to the USA. If this boy committed a minor traffic offence, I doubt very much whether he woud have been arrested for it and should, therefore, have no problem gaining entry on the Visa waiver programme or gaining a Visa. The mere fact that he applied for a Visa suggests that he knew he may not be admitted under the VWP so, therefore, suggests the 'minor' traffic offence was not so minor. All supposition on my part though. I have no idea what could cause him to actually be refused a Visa, as I don't know on what basis the decision is made.

Hi

Could one of you lovely UK CB mods move this over to TP please :teeth:

Thanks.

I don't know the details of offenses that would warrant not getting a visa, but I know the US are very hot on drug related crime and violent crime (especially against the police).

I had a client who was refused a visa due to a 'minor traffic offence' it was actually an unpaid parking fine he had incurred on a hire car and had though he wouldn't be traceable once he returned to the UK

It all sounds a bit dodgy to be honest!

There's a number of reasons he might been turned down. Does he work ? showing that you have enough for your trip could one reason.

Have a look at the U S Embassy website and check Visa Refusal

Think Carol may have highlighted the reason for this. You wouldnt get stopped for a UK traffic offence i think. There may be something outstanding from a previous trip and they do stop you for that until you sort it

reading this reckon i may have to apply for a visa.
a compliant was made that i assulted someone the police came out to my house and took me to the station so i ould make a statement, the guy hit me and i naturally hit him back and about 3 hours after the incident he decided to make the complaint, when i gave them my statement and said what time it occured they where under the impression it had happened at the time the guy rang them, the result was we where both spoken to by the police about our future behaviour and rhat was it.
i thought that was the end of it but have just found out the other week that my name is still on police files, i take it i would have to apply for a visa because of this

If you wasnt arrested then you should be ok. Alot of the time you are merely requested to appear at the station for a talking to like that unless you refuse.
If you were arrested then an assault against the person would by the US law require a visa.

Cochise , when they came they just said they had to respond to the complaint , and for me to go with them and make my statement, they never said they where arresting me, but with my name on there files i am just a bit concerned, might just because a complaint was made against me.
anywayt i have sent a dat 1 form away to see what it actually says on it, will let you know

rpbert1 if you weren't arrested then theres no need for a Visa.

"Under United States visa law people who have been arrested are not eligible to travel visa free under the Visa Waiver Program(VWP); they are required to apply for visas before traveling. If the arrest resulted in a conviction, the individual may require a special restricted visa in order to travel."

It sounds like you were asked to go to the police station voluntarily and there for you can still use the VWP.

Hi,

DH has 3 points on his licence, don't think this will effect entry but do we need to tell car hire?

Thanks

Jen

Unless your husband appeared in court - if it was just a fixed ticket then he's fine.
