Hi,

Under what circumstance do you require a visa to travel to the US nowadays?

We all have machine readable passports and no criminal records.

For some reason, I just got jittery, but I assume we'll be OK on the visa waiver programme.

Thanks.

You will be fine until Oct 2006 if your machine readable passport has a laminated photo, but if a digital photo (issued since about 2000) then you will be fine til the passport expires, or so the US are saying at the moment.

The new requirement for digital photos only applies to passports issued after 26 October 2005. Check out the UK passport agency for more details:
http://www.ukpa.gov.uk/press_160605.asp

Now there has been a bit of confusion about this as in Oct the UKPA were saying this -

British citizens with machine-readable passports but without a digital photo will still be able to visit the USA visa free until the 26 October 2006 as their passport was issued before the 26 October 2005 deadline.

from here. But now they have omitted the bit about non digital passports only being valid til Oct 2006 from their press release!

Still a bit confusing!
