There's nothing wrong with just having a fun place for kids to play, but don't pass yourself off as educational. Real game developers don't get away with it, why should these guys?
I'll admit that I probably wouldn't have known the name of the dude who wasn't a Beach Boy if I didn't complete the quest (wait, what was his name again?), but the trivia they're putting out there is pretty useless. Learning about ice cream and father's day is fun, but we've passed by some perfect opportunities to bring real information into the game. What about Flag Day? Hopefully Independence Day will bring a quest about American history, but since it's now the end-of-beta day for VFK, they'll probably pass on this one too.
Fun facts do not equal history, especially when many of the items are disputable- take today's "first movie star" question for example. These are basic recall questions that require a google search since there is no in-game information source. Skimming for information and researching are skills that might be learned by completing the quests, but most people aren't coming away with any better understanding of fads or ice cream.
The bird game is just as bad. It's basically a fancy set of flashcards- there's no real understanding attached. You're not learning anything about these birds, you're just connecting an image with its name. Again, it might be a good exercise, but its not generating knowledge. (Sidenote:
these images that were so graciously distributed by VFK are public domain- they don't own them, so shouldn't be giving permission for their use. I seriously object to that fansite watermarking them as their own, but i digress...)
The environment they created is just a mishmash of time periods and settings- and I'm sure there are plenty of inaccuracies mixed in there too. Just because they chose a historic setting, doesn't mean that anyone is learning anything. You can go to Colonial Williamsburg or Plimoth Plantation and leave with no further understanding of the time period than when you entered (I sure have!). They had a good idea at one point. It seems like they've strayed away from it trying to please everyone, and it's created a serious mess.
The game concept had much potential. Sure, VFK has come a long way since it started, but I don't see them making this truly an educational game. If they want to be able to survive on the market (educational or not), they need some consultants in there real quick. The excuses that work for their beta population are laughable to anyone outside of our situation.
Honestly, it seems like the Disboards are a sort of change agent for this game. Whenever serious concerns were raised here, they got their acts together and tried to fix the issues. The VFK-specific fansites seem to ignore any real problems with the game- I can't imagine what it would be like if those forums were the only form of feedback for the developers.
