Ok, DS14 needs to fly home. I secured air travel but am having trouble getting him to the airport. I can't reach the adults he is staying with and neither can he. (We just won't go there right now!) I left them a message saying he was coming home to be treated for sun poisoning. I am not sure he could last another 48 hours of waiting for treatment at this point. (A family at the next camp site looked at him and said if it was their son they would bring him home becuase he is starting to get sick. I thanked them this morning for watching him yesterday becuase there was no way to get him home until tonight.) So now I need to get him from the campground to the airport. I found a cab company that said it would $50 but I have no idea if that is a good rate or not. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have no idea what the going rate is on a cab ride but it is at least a half hour drive to the airport, plus with the holiday weekend, it might be more expensive. I thought I read on your other thread that you gave the other parents a medical release form. If your son needs to be seen right away, there is a Patient First just up the road from where they are staying.

Yes they have a med release form but they are not at the sampsite currently. They do not think he is that bad. They keep leaving him alone. I just found out that the couple at the next campsite dressed the burn yesterday. They are actually the only adults I have talked to and they said that he should come home. I have left a message for the parents saying I was bringing him home and they have yet to return my call. At this point they may return and he may have already left!

Around here, a cab to the airport is $45, and it's a 20 minute ride. All the cab companies here cost the same exact amount.

$50 is probably right. If the KOA campground is where I remember, it's at least 30 min to the airport. I'm sorry--I know how I'd feel if I were in this situation. Just not something you ever think will happen.

Who cares how much it costs? If he urgently needs to come home, the ends justify the means!

I'm not sure what the current rate is for cabs in the area but I do know that it's about 30 to 45 minutes to the airport depending on traffic. And with the holiday weekend I'm sure there will be quite a bit. If he needs to come home I would say the cost is worth it.

Do you know when the other adults will be back? There are several medical offices right near the camp ground along with the hospital less then 15 minutes away. Did he talk to the people at the campground offices? I would hope that they would be able to help him get the treatment he needs or at least point him in the right direction.

I'm very sorry that the adults that were in charge are not there for him right now.

You should call the office yourself. I found this KOA site near Va Beach.

Maybe they can help you get him there.

The cost isn't really the issue it is making sure they don't over charge him because he is a kid. I can honestly say I have never taken a cab anywhere so I know nothing about cab rates and what is normal verses not normal. I wouldn't have even thought about it except the airlines lady said to be cautious. I also am not sure how much cash he has left so I need to make sure he has enough with him to pay for it.

Can you contact the cab company yourself & pay for it with a credit card? If they overcharge you or give your DS bad service you could always sic the cc company on them.

Try what mlynn suggested.

From what little I've read in this thread, this situation is appalling. If I were closer I'd drive to that KOA myself & get your DS to the airport. What airport is he flying out of and is he well enough to travel as a sick unaccompanied minor child (will the airline allow him)?

Prayers,
agnes!

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. What time is his flight?

I finally got to talk to a parent with him. He is going to put him on a trolley to Norfolk. What I couldn't get him to commit to was riding with him. GRRRR There are several trolley changes and I would hate for him to become confused and end up the wrong place! He is flying Southwest and his flight is at 7:10. They are going to have a wheel chair assist him getting to and from terminals. He should be ok to fly. He isn't throwing up yet just really nausous. They are suppossed to be giving him some Benedryl for the itchyness. He isn't going to check bags he is just taking his backpack with a change of clothes and we are going to get the rest of his stuff this week when the family returns home.
He is actually afraid to ride in a cab for some reason. He worries constantly about money so I am sure that is what part of the issue is. He wanted to come home but didn't want us to have to "waste money" on a ticket. He is going to grow up to be one of those people that never spends money on anything I think!!
Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas and prayers.

Just spoke with them again. They are on the way to the airport and it sounds like the dad is going to go the whole way with him!! I pray he does. I also spoke with the parent of another teen with them. He was horrified about the whole situation. He had no idea either that there would be so little supervision. The dad with him said he isn't as bad as the other people said he was. I think he was trying to convince me that he was really keeping an eye on things when he knows I am not real happy at the moment! I can't wait for him to get here!

Good luck with everything. Norfolk isn't that big an airport, so he should be able to get around okay. The trollies are just like riding a bus. I wish you could talk him into a cab, but hopefully it'll work out okay.

Nick just texted me and said that the dad just told him what bus to catch and left him on his own!!! I just spoke with them 10 mins ago and he said he was riding with him. GRRRR Must calm down before I see these parents again.....:headache:
Nick says he is ok. I am going to talk with him the rest of the way. He will never ever travel out of state with these people again.

Why was he with them? On vacation, for the holidays, related to some group he is in??

Sending:grouphug:

He was on vacation with his friend's family. Since they were also taking another boy with them that we knew I felt a little more comfortable with it. It will not be a mistake I make again! In fact I am not sure the other boy will ever travel with them again either after talking with his dad today. I know the other boys family alot better then the one he is with. The three boys have been good friends for 3 years now and have stayed between each of homes often. This is the first time they ever traveled together though out of state.

I'm not sure why you expect the Dad to accompany your son home and cut short his vacation:confused3 You should have taken the 1st flight out toi get hom and fly back with him. JMHO

I think she just wants the dad to make sure the kid gets to the airport okay. If they weren't camping, the dad would have his car there, and could just drive him. The whole thing sounds like one of those situations that you'd never envision happening, so she's just trying to get her kid home.

Chager, sent you a PM in case I case I can help. You and your son are in my thoughts. Please keep us updated.
