How does first choice upgraded seats compare to virgin economy?
I have compared first choices prices with Virgin and virgin are a few hundred cheaper in economy however FC premier seating is cheaper than virgin pe.

Would you choose virgins or FC Premier seating?

First Choices new standard seating is bigger than Virgins economy, of course you don't get downtown check in, big baggage allowance etc but their premier seating is even better!

first choice economy - 33" pitch, leather seats, personal seat back tv, choice of 4 course meal, snacks etc

virgin economy - on line check in, twilight check in etc, 31" pitch, free meals, drinks etc

first choice premier - 36" pitch, air filled leather seats, 9" seat back tv with the on-demand facility, priority check in, complimentary drinks, real china for food etc

virgin premium - 38" pitch, priority boarding etc, free drinks, snacks etc, real china!

between the two, FC's economy is better but Virgins premium is better than Fc's!

of course, one goes to Sanford, the other to MCO, and you get through sanford quicker but its further out! six of one, half a dozen of the other.

If you're likely to make use of frequent flyer points, online or twilight check in, more baggage etc. go with Virgin.

Hi, thank you for your reply, I think I will definitely consider FC premier seating. I don't mind which airport we fly into and we live less than 10 minutes from Manchester Airport so don't really need the extras like online check in etc as it is easy enough for us to get to the Airport early.

I don't think we will book virgins PE as I want to spend more on the hotel for this trip.

Hi

For the record have just flown to and from West Coast USA with Virgin (10 hours+ in economy seats). Seemed to be plenty of room and the entertainment was amazing. There were individual seat back TV's with on demand entertainment i.e. you choose what you want to watch and when. Programs can be paused, fast forwarded/rewound etc and included 52 different movies and a wide choice of TV programs. (Three back to back films and your most of the way to Orlando). You can also select your seats on-line several months in advance.

Cheers

Hi, you don't get the entertainment system on the Manchester to orlando route.

Not all Virgin Aircraft have the new updated entertainment systems yet, I am pretty sure the new Airbus A600 planes have it, but certainly the jumbo's we flew on in August didn't have.

We flew PE with Virgin on our return flight, just get the impression the level of service etc is slightly better if you are seated upstairs.

Virgins flights from manchester to MCO do have the Video on Demand. Well i know my plane did, and so did my friends. I would defo go with Virgin, its a safe bet, and you won't be dissapointed!

I might be the odd one out here but-
I am a big fan on FC planes we have flown with them twice since they updated their planes and have flown with virgin many many times and I have to say I think FC economy are better than virgin economy, the seats seem to be bigger and are definitely more comfortable, the tv was great and you get to pause rewind etc.

If FC weren't so expensive (they are always more expensive on the flights I look for to Orlando) I would probably fly with them instead of virgin.

I agree, they certainly do seem dearer than a lot of longhaul scheduled services (not just to Orlando!) but they are getting rave reviews, service seems to have been great so far

We flew with FC last August to the Caribbean and upgraded to the premier class. It was definitely worth the money. I think Virgin Premier class beats FC but only just. The only thing I didn't like about FC premier is that the seating was 2-3-2 which meant there was a risk of not getting seated together which did happen to some and people were very upset about it. Apart from that I would definitely fly with them again and would recommend them. I would especially choose them over Virgin if flying economy class.

Also, when we flew, from Gatwick I think it was, you could check-in the evening before but you had to pay. I think we paid £20 which made it £5 per person.

Don't forget that Virgin have just announced a brand-new and improved PE service. It includes a bigger seat and extras such as an upgraded meal service.

Virgin Atlantic, the pioneer of the Premium Economy cabin, is to reinvent the product in a £12m revamp which includes a new wider seat – the largest in its class - and additional services to woo business and leisure passengers alike. The new seat, which is currently being rolled out across the fleet, combines a 38” seat pitch with a width of 21”, which is wider than BA Clubworld and around 3” wider than other airlines’ Premium Economy products.

The leather seat features enhanced ergonomics for improved comfort. It also features a dual position footrest, lumbar support, adjustable headrest with wings, and a redesigned tray table. All seats provide passengers with lap top power.

Virgin Atlantic’s Premium Economy passengers benefit from many dedicated services when they travel on Premium Economy which include a dedicated check in, a separate cabin, priority boarding, priority duty free and quicker baggage reclaim and a dedicated toilet on the majority of aircraft. They also receive a pre-departure drink and post dinner liqueur.

The new additional services include dedicated cabin crew, a redesigned meal service and dedicated amenity kit. They will also receive a soft fleece blanket and a fruitbowl service, where passengers can help themselves to fruit throughout the flight.

Steve Ridgway, chief executive of Virgin Atlantic, commented:

“Virgin Atlantic invented Premium Economy back in 1992 and in recent years our competitors have attempted to imitate the product. After successfully winning market share with the introduction of the Upper Class Suite, we are now focusing on the Premium Economy battleground which is worth nearly half a billion pounds per year. We are confident that this new product will ensure we remain the market leader offering passengers more than any other airline.”

Last year Virgin Atlantic flew around half a million passengers in Premium Economy and between 2000 and 2005 the number of passengers flying in the cabin each year increased by 56%. All indications are that this market is set to grow even more.

Joe Ferry, Head of Design for Virgin Atlantic, commented:

“Passengers are changing the way they travel, with many leisure passengers opting for a more business class-orientated service for which Premium Economy fits the bill. We have extended that business class feel further by taking the knowledge from designing our multi award winning Upper Class Suite and integrating it into enhanced design and comfort for the new Premium Economy seat.”

Due to Premium Economy’s popularity Virgin Atlantic has increased the number of Premium Economy seats on its fleet by one third in the past 18 months. Currently there are 58 Premium Economy seats on aircraft based at Gatwick. The number of Premium Economy seats on aircraft operating from Heathrow ranges from 28 to 38. The configuration of seats on the Upper Deck of the Boeing 747 is 2 – 2 with the configuration of 2-3-2 on the lower deck of 747 aircraft and on all Airbus aircraft.

Virgin Atlantic was the first airline to come up with the concept of a Premium Economy class. It was first introduced in 1992 as Mid Class, a service aimed at the cost conscious business traveller who for budgetary reasons travelled economy but still required extra space in which to work or relax. The product was rebranded as Premium Economy in November 1994. Today it is favoured by business and leisure passengers alike who want more flexibility, space and comfort. This month Virgin Atlantic won the Best Premium Economy Award at the Business Traveller Awards.

I guess it will all come down to price, we got virgin PE for next year for £195 supplement for each way which I thought was very good. If we can get a similar price again then we would choice Virgin.

If I go with FC i would definitely go with the premier class as the economy is more expensive than virgin premier.

That's still over twice the price of FC premium.

I haven't flown either airline yet but I would choose FC out of the two as their product in both Economy and PE looks better.

Virgin (economy) are cheaper if you are booking way in advance but around the 3-4 month mark First Choice (and all charter) prices start to drop right down.

What about flight delays with both?

I'm sure they both have a pretty good record of being on time. Virgin have however experienced a few delays recently.

Hi
Does anyone know what the luggage allowance for FC PE is ?

Thx

From our experience of travelling all over with various airlines I would definately chose Virgin over First Choice. We travelled with First Choice in September this year and it was by some distance our worst ariline experience ever. On the way out the plane was swapped for a small one and we had to refuel in Bangor, the toilets blocked after 4 hours so no one could use them. Then on the way back a 5 hour delay in the tiny ramshackle Sanford Airport.

When we complained both at the airport and in writing on our return their answer was simple - Tough. The weren't interested. Far from being First Choice they would be our last.

Our experience with Virgin both to Orlando from Manchester (2 to 3 trips per year for the past 5 years) and other various trips to the US with them has been almost exclusively positive.

To us there would be no competition - Virgin all the way.
