NEW BAGGAGE POLICY - EFFECTIVE 23RD SEPTEMBER 2009

From 23 September 2009, we will be changing our checked-in baggage policy. We will be moving to a 'Piece Policy' for the whole of the network.

NEW BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE:
Number of Bags:
Destination:
(to and from) USA, Caribbean, Kenya, Nigeria
2 x 23 kilos - Economy 2 x 23 kilos - Premium Economy 3 x 23 kilos - Upper Class
All other International destinations
1 x 23 kilos - Economy 2 x 23 kilos - Premium Economy 3 x 23 kilos - Upper Class

EXCESS BAGGAGE CHARGES:
Destination:
(to and from) Economy Premium Economy Upper Class
Bags weighing anything above 23 kilos up to a maximum of 32 kilos. GBP35/USD50 - Economy GBP35/USD50 - Premium Economy GBP35/USD50 - Upper Class

Additional bags over free allowance up to 23 kilos. GBP90/USD150 - Economy GBP90/USD150 - Premium Economy GBP90/USD150 - Upper Class

If the additional bag weighs more than 23 kilos, but up to 32 kilos, excess charges will also apply. Bags weighing over 32 kilos will not be accepted and should be carried as freight or cargo.

For passengers travelling from a Virgin Atlantic to another Virgin Atlantic fights, the most generous allowance will apply.

Passengers transferring to/from another airline should adhere to each airline's allowance when travelling.

That means less shopping coming home for me :sad2:
Regards
Julie

Your shopping and belongings for a holiday weigh more than 46 kg per person?!?!

I never even check luggage. Heck everything I take fits into an everyday backpack....

I think that 46 kg for Economy and PE passengers is very generous, plus I imagine that most UC passengers don't reach anywhere near their 69 kg allowance!

What you actually mean is less shoes & bags for me to try and cram into the suitcases :) Y3 trainers I assume will be the exception, in my case especially.

well thats what my cases do, infact up until that date PE is 32kgs x2 each and we have often worried that our luggage is going to go over that-been close to the bone a few times as well.....:rotfl:

One year on the return journey one of my cases weighed 31.9kg!! I now pack suitcase scales in my case when ever we travel so I can check before we get to the airport!!

Be careful at DTD virgin check in, we bought some scales to take and we measured a case at just under 23kgs, check in measured at a kilo over but rounded it down to 23, we measured on our home scales on getting back home and they measured exactly the same as the scale we took with us. VA's couldn't have been calibrated correctly.

Sadly this seems to be the way with a lot of airlines, that's why we always carry a handheld weighing device around with us. You would be suprised what some companies try to get away with! :sad2:

same here netty lol!!

Is this the same if the flight was booked....say last year?? :confused3

I hope not!! Iv got a ton of wedding stuff to take this October and booked when the allowance was more!!

With 4 of us going we are allowed 8x23kg. I can't remember a time when we have actually used more than 6 - maybe we aren't spending enough time in the malls.

If your flight was booked before this september 23rd then you are still entitled to the original luggage allowance, your ok so dont worry :goodvibes

well you lot need to shop more!! :lmao:

We're flying PE this trip and we travel with 3 kids :dance3:- the one year old will be in a pram. So for us, having paid for 5 seats we are allowed 10 suitcases of 23kg each.
We would like to take 2 suitcases of up to 32kg each so that we can physically travel through the airports and the hotel transfers. This was our expectation when booking many months ago.
Even though we are 'allowed' a higher total baggage allowance there's no way we could manage any where near that number of smaller suitcases and 3 kids! :scared1: If we were travelling as as a couple we could easily manange 2 suitcases each.

We feel a bit miffed.

Are you saying that you are only allowed 23kgs x2 each? and you would like 32kgs x 2? if you booked months ago then your allowance is still 32kgs x2 each-apologies if i have read it wrong...

For this trip you will still be able to take cases up to 32kg with no extra charge. The baggage handlers have been lobbying for ages to have the maximum weight for each piece reduced to 23kg so, although I can see your point, unfortunately they won't agree with you. You can still take 32kg in future but you will have to pay excess baggage charges for it.

Thanks for those responses. I'll give Virgin Atlantic a call to check that we are definitely ok with an upper limit of 32kg per piece of luggage. If so, we'll be able to take two bigger suitcases to cater for all 5 of us. :)

If you use a luggage trolley at the airport and hotel you would have only one thing to push, rather than two big suitcases or several small suitcases to pull :)
