Virgin Atlantic new seat plus programme.

I've got two flights booked with VA in 2013 so I just called them to ask how much "seat plus" would cost me

For my flight to Vancouver - £179

For my flight to Orlando £149

Both of these prices are one way and according to the agent I spoke to, are not determined by date, but are determined by destination

So for a return flight to Orlando .... £298 ..... Urm hello :(

Nearly £300 no way. Seems no one else has read your comment though as they are still saying £99

Only Samantha has said £99 and that was in reply to my question to her asking if she would pay that, no-one else has mentioned £99 only in quotes from VA's website.

Wayne I'm just saying some one has rang been told its by destination and has reported back so now we all know. Personally if you can afford an extra £300 for an empty seat then good for you as £300 is a big deal to us.

Would be interesting to see a fare breakdown for a round trip of £298 for one of those spare plus seats and compare it against a paying passenger fare which looks like this for a flight in early December to Orlando for £493.70.....

£168.00 Fare
£213.00 Operating Airline Fuel & Insurance Surcharge
£3.20 USA Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service Fee
£4.40 USA Immigration Service Fee
£3.50 USA Customs User Fee
£65.00 UK Air Passenger Duty
£11.20 UK Passenger Service Charge
£21.00 USA Transportation Tax
£1.60 September 11th Security Fee
£2.80 USA Passenger Facility Charge
£493.70 Total.

Also, I wonder if you can you claim an extra meal, wine and brandy for the spare seat that you've paid for?
:scratchin

I don't get who will have priority with this new system. :confused3 Will my family of 4 with seats in the middle row of 4 get moved for a couple paying for 2 extra empty seats or a family of 3 paying for 1 extra seat?

I know I won't be happy if we are split into two groups of 2 and then see empty seats in the middle 4. :(

Just ring them and ask how much. If previous post is correct then its £149 not £99 for the Orlando route.

Rang today - it is 149 for the seat - they said it was a fixed price and I could purchase now as I wondered if it might drop the nearer you got to your flying date. They said not. Anyway - I didn't buy it!!

We won't know for sure until it gets underway, but I can't see many couples paying an extra £600 for 2 spare seats when you could probably upgrade for a similar amount.

When airlines are desperate for as much revenue as they can get in difficult times, I would think that Virgin would have to decide whether the irritation caused by splitting a family of four into 2 x 2 would be worth the additional cash to sell as 3 + 1 when they have just a little spare capacity. My guess is that they might, but it's a scenario not likely to happen often.

I also wonder, if Virgin do not find this a worthwhile exercise if they will follow BA (and all the others!) and charge for pre booking rather than just continue with the free seat 'requests'.

I would probably pay £99, doubt I would £149 but then again I would pay 3 x £50pp for Delta Economy comfort for 5" extra legroom, the extra seat would be just as welcome as that. Glad I am not flying VA to have the choice, I wouldn't know what to do :rotfl:
