Has anyone ever done a vinyl tile backsplash? I'm thinking of trying it in my kitchen and it seems cheaper (and easier!) than regular tile. I was also thinking about painting a backsplash instead.... has anyone done this? I would think vinyl would stand up to splatters better than paint would... trying to revamp the kitchen, and not spend a ton of $$$$$

This is the tile I'm thinking of trying. http://www.lowes.com/pd_45598-79508...s=p_product_price|0&Ntt=vinyl+tile&facetInfo=

I found this DIY how-to online: http://www.hgtv.com/kitchens/clever-kitchen-ideas-easy-backsplash/index.html

If you decide to use Vinyl tile clean the areas let the area dry then paint it and let that dry for a few days then tile. That area of the Kitchen will likley have oil from cooking and the tiles will not stick
However... you could also buy a small tile saw from Harbor freight tools for around 40.00 and put ceramic tiles up yourself with much better results-- yes it is a lot more time consuming, work and the costs will be higher from buying the adhesive, trowels, grout, grout float.... Point is do not limit yourself due to what may seem to be a lower cost (and not by as much as you may think) as you may be unhappy with the VT and end up putting up ceramic anyway...

I used vinyl tile on my kitchen floor then grouted them. It looks like real tile with the grout and people come in and thought it was tile. Not sure about keeping them clean with the grease. I have a friend who is a desinger and says that you can get a new peel n stick metal type back splas which is inexpensive.

As someone who sold a house 2 years ago and redid the kitchen, I would highly recommend you use ceramic tile or glass. You can find cheap nice looking tile at lowes/home depot. Glass tiles will be more money. Ceramic tiles are worth the money and investment. Are also easy to install. We also rented a tile cutter for $50 for 24 hours which was all we need it for. We also painted the wall and tiled right over that. No other work required:goodvibes

I would measure your kitchen counters and go talk to someone in your local hardware store about doing a tile backsplash and get a good idea of the cost that way.

Tile is really cheap and not that hard to lay for such a small area like a back splash. I would not use vinyl.

I would advise against it - vinyl stick on tiles are not really meant for kitchen mess - the glue comes unstuck very easily when it gets wet (from sad experience with vinyl tiles on our floor.)

If you want to paint, a cool thing to do might be to put up a large piece of glass on your wall. Paint the back of the glass, and then mount it like a mirror.

Thanks for everyone's insight!! We are vegetarians that don't really 'cook' all that much (we eat raw food a LOT), so splatters don't worry me. I just finished the kitchen- it looks GREAT! PP's were right- the tiles did fall down. I did research online on some waterproof/flame-retardant glue and went with a bathroom tile glue from Lowes. The vinyl is sticking just right now!! If I can find my computer cord I'll put up pictures! Here is a picture of the 'before' (a few Christmas' ago)....

WOW I really like the look of this! We have an area that needs covering and this would be just perfect for it. Thanks for the idea and the pictures!

Congrats on eating well. I keep trying to improve! :goodvibes

Thanks! It wasn't that difficult- a lot of measuring and cutting. Scissors and an exacto knife worked just fine (though my hand is a bit tired haha). I spent $39 on this project and have half the box of tiles left. Maybe time to re-do my downstairs bathroom floor to match??? Ok maybe not yet :rotfl2:

That looks nice!

I think they might make some sort of vinyl sealer. For the times you do cook something. It is sort of just a clear very thin liquid you paint on. Like what you would do w/ tile.

HEHE....I couldn't really either!! :lmao: I was like "ok... I need to be creative....what can I do...." and then this is what happened! I actually emailed my DH on Friday and said "uh oh, duck and cover... I'm getting creative..."

:rotfl2:

:goodvibes I like this!! Now I want to do something similar!! Our house still needs finishing touches like the backsplash in the kitchen. Our home use to have contact paper as a backsplash when we moved in!! :scared1:
