Vintage resort pics?

ART4.jpg

This is the "World" map that hung in every guest room both in the Poly and the Contemp. It measured approx 4 x 5 feet, and appears to be vinyl bonded onto masonite. During the rehab of the Contemp (about 1985 and/or 1986), the maps were ripped off the walls and thrown into trash piles. Many were destroyed or ruined, and they were sold off as scrap masonite for $5.00 each!
Years ago I saw one on eBay for $10,000 but it didn't get a bid. I wonder if it would today?

Notice the locations of the Venetian, Asian and Persian Hotels that were never built.

A friend of mine's husband came across the maintenance guys destroying these/tossing them into the trash and asked for one - they gave it to him - no problem. It's one of her favorite Disney pieces - still hanging in her home.

Great pics!

These pics are really great! This is my kind of thread.
I have none to share though as I didn't go to WDW as a kid.:sad1:

Just stayed at the Contemporary though and love to see how much it has changed and then again, how much it hasn't! Love that.

One question about the pics of kids and people in the water-They used to let you swim? It all seemed off limits when we were there this past week.
I overheard someone on the monorail say it's because of the danger of crocs!

Yes they used to let you swim. It would be gators not crocs but I think more than gators it's a bacteria problem.

I hope some one will post more pics soon. I would but I didn't go for the 1st time until 1986 and I was 22 years old. We took pics will a disc camera. Does anyone remember those? I don't think they lasted too long. They didn't take good pics.I was expecting my 1st child at the time and all I wanted to do was stay in the room because I was too hot! We stayed at a large Travelodge just outside of WDW. No photos of that either.

Here is my first time at Disney World circa 1978. I was 3 at the time and we stayed at Poly. The wife and I are taking my kids for the first time in September and staying there. For my wifes first time to Disney (I think 1981) they stayed at Poly too. Kind of a family tradition, if anyone is going for the first time, we stay at Poly.

Anyway, on to the pictures.

Only one of Poly. I'm the little guy.

Oh those totally bring back memories!! Especially since when you stayed at FW (pre-FW pool) you could use the pool at CR and Poly, and because Poly had that slide, that's where we always went.

Yes they used to let you swim. It would be gators not crocs but I think more than gators it's a bacteria problem.

yes, you could swim off the beach at FW, Poly and I think CR. I don't think they ever mentioned that there were gators there, since it was man made...why would there be gators? They had nice little sandy beach areas. I know I have pics somewhere from the early 80's of my mom and my youngest brother sitting on the beach at FW with him digging in the sand and my dad would go out on the mini speed boats with me and my other brothers.

I can only dig up pics of the resorts back to 1984...I actually had only stayed at a Disney resort the first time in 1983...every time we went to Disney in the early days, from 1971 to 1983, we stayed at a Ramada or Holiday Inn out on 192 (we was po' back then!) The first time I stayed AT Disney, I felt like royalty...I wanted to tell everyone I passed that I was staying at the Contemporary. With a rare few exceptions, I've stayed on property ever since.

Here's Contemporary, 1984:

Here's some from our first family trip in 1990 where we stayed at the CBR which was still fairly new. The little guy in the photo, our son is now almost 23!!!

The view from our building in South Trinidad towards Old Port Royale; our room was a preferred view (corner) in mid -November and cost a little over $100 a night.

The only pictures I have from inside our CBR room are these two:

They installed the mini-bars while we were staying there but we were watching our money so didn't indulge. :rolleyes1

And yes, even back then people left Disney animals etc. in the windows of their rooms.

Here's a picture of the bedding:

And here are some pictures from 1992 when we stayed at the Poly in a room overlooking the monorail.

My dad went to WDW when it opened in 1971. He doesn't have any pictures, though. I'm hoping I'll come across some at his parents' house next month. My mother also went to WDW in the 70s... she might have some pictures.

My mother stayed in a camper at Fort Wilderness and my father stayed in a pop-up camper in his sister's backyard (they drove all the way from Oklahoma!), so probably not many resort pictures. I love this thread, though!

Love the CBR pics. DH and I stayed there in 89 or possibly 88. The first time we stayed, the resort was open but only half completed, so it had a lot of construction going and I can't even remember if the main food court area was complete yet or not! So it was very early. Then we stayed again at CBR for our honeymoon in 91. So those pics bring back memories!

I guess we are straying away from the vintage resorts, and I promise to get back on track as soon as I find my picutres of the Vacation Villas where Saratoga now sits, but I thought you might like to see what the tickets looked like in 1989.

Hey, I still have one of these tickets from the late 80's when I took my sisters to Disney. It still has one day left on it, do you think it's still valid? I mean, could I ever use it for my daughter, she's 6? Its a child's ticket, but it does say non transferable, but I thought Disney tickets never expire? Obviously my siser isn't a kid anymore, but I'd love to use it for my daughter. Any thoughts?

To my knowledge, as long as the ticket does not have an expiration date, it can still be used. You may have to turn that ticket in and get the newer kind with the magnetic swipe on the back.

Kimall, I love your pictures! Your son was so cute!! :goodvibes

Yes, I used one a few years ago. They had to go get a giant binder with pictures of all old tickets and look through it to find my ticket and some code, which they entered into the computer and it issued me a modern 1-day ticket.

I love seeing all the old pics. I have that same ticket I wish I could put my stuff on the computer:sad2:. I'm just not real good at it:confused3. I'll have to keep trying:goodvibes. Keep them coming this is fun.

I have many resort pictures over the years even when guests were permitted to swim in the lakes at CR as well as Poly! How things have changed but stayed the same!! Poly used to be much smaller as well. The one that has changed probably the most over the years is Shades of Green. It had a few different themes altogether over the years.

I have pics from the campground and when Shades of Green was the golf resort and still owned by Disney. We stay at Shades of Green alot when we go. I have pics going down the slide in to the lake at the campground. I love that things changed but at the same time like everyone else I miss the old ways.:sad1:
