Vintage resort pics?

OMG! This thread is awesome. And has successfully distracted me for about 1/2 hour while I should've been doing homework! Oh well, this is great! I wish there were more pics of GF, though. I grew up staying there and it just IS Disney World to me. Those pictures from 1990 look so old but that doesn't sound like that long ago! OK, I think I'm getting old...

I'll try to dig up some pictures from my first trips as a little kid in the early 90's!

Oh my gosh!! That's just what I remember it looking like from my first trip there as a kid! I loved the overhead cable cars!!

I had been posting these on my most recent pre-trip report and someone suggested that I post them over here. Most of the pics I have are of the parks, but I had scanned a few of the resorts. When I was a kid we always stayed at the the Poly. I wish I could afford to stay there these days too.

From 1979 my brother and I with a few tiki statues -

From 1981 at the Poly pool. They used to have the characters waterski up to the resort. Somewhere I have a pic of Goofy on waterskis. I'll have to look for it. In the second one you can see that there is no GF on the other side of the lake.

From 1981 - A shot of the Contemporary - you can see lots of people swimming in the lake behind us.

More from 1981 - The beach at the Poly. Swimming was still allowed here then - you can see the lifeguard stand.

And the pool in 1979

I have more, but I'll have to wait until my new power cord arrives before I can use my computer again.

I've heard various reasons for no swimming in the lake, but I don't think any have ever been confirmed:

bacteria/microorganisms
gators
people going out too far with boat traffic

According to the Birnbaum guides, the reason for not allowing swimming is because of the significant amount of boat traffic on both lakes.

OMG I think that is the SAME peter pan, my friend and I drooled over when we were visiting disney. we were there about Feb 1979/80

I should dig up my old picture and see. we were teenagers and being silly..peter pan was so cute!!

That is just too funny! As soon as I can power my laptop at home up again I can post pics again. I'm hating being without a computer at home. I feel so lost.

Caribbean Beach Resort - June 1994

Eating pringles from the in room cash "snack bar/fridge" and calling Mom to say we got there ok!



I don't think the resort has changed much in 15 years!
