Villas at the Disneyland Hotel

So the general public can book DVC rooms? I thought the only way non-DVC members could stay at DVC properties was by buying nights from DVC members.

Go ahead and slam me for not having paid attention... :-)
I'm just as confused as you are!

I hope we can choose not to stay in the villas if they are open to non-DVC people, I don't really care for the look of the new villas and would prefer to stay in the regular hotel.

The article says so but I am not sure about it.
It would seem to me that only DVC members can book but Magic Keys too.

Other places are saying the same, including MiceChat. Super interesting because I hadn't heard about the general public being able to reserve but I may not have been paying attention either.

Edited to add: now that I think about it, Disney World has some type of Villas that are available to the general public at certain resorts there. I thought the whole Disneyland Hotel wing was going to be DVC dedicated but that makes sense now.

I'm even surprised that Magic Key holders can book rooms in the DVC building, much less the general public. Again, I thought these properties were only for DVC members. Has that market gotten softer so Disney is widening the audience??

The general public has always been able to book DVC properties based on the number of undeclared shares that are available. Anyone can book and Old Key West or Saratoga or Riviera accommodation, for example, for cash.

You have always been able to book villas at WDW even if you don't own DVC. They are readily available on the WDW website, so DL would be no different.
Renting the points however is far cheaper than paying via Disney.

For everyone confused: Disney appear to be renting the DVC villas out as cash initially prior to sales. This is because there is a lot of inventory which the company owns. This will diminish over time as new DVC owners buy into the resort. Disney usually will retain a 2% interest in the property after selling out. The same thing can be seen with Riviera in WDW which Disney offers to cash guests as the property is not sold out to members.

This strategy is a way for Disney to make more money from cash guests before declaring it and offering it up to existing members' points (which won't earn Disney anything extra)

Agree. We booked the Riviera a few years back for five nights.

Yup, the rooms also become available to cash bookings when owners do exchange outs for non dvc properties with their points.

I totally don't understand DVC. Is it kind of like condos that people own, and they rent them out to non DVC people? Are they a good deal if you buy points to use them?

It’s a timeshare, but it works on a points system instead of owning a week at a specific resort.

You also have the fixed week option (in addition to the points system) at resorts such as Aulani, Villas at the Grand Floridian, Polynesian Villas & Bungalows, Copper Creek, and Riviera.

Correct, but you can exchange out your fixed week for the value of the points on the contract and use it at a different time of year or a different resort.
