What do I need to do to run movies and music from my pc onto my tv. They are right next to each other and I have a laptop if that matters. Thanks guys.

A lot depends on what kind of television (really, what kind of output ports there are in the television) and what kind of input ports and software you have on the PC. What may also be important is where does the television signal come from? PCs are generally not designed to display television broadcasts from a television so it is not a straight-forward plug-this-in-here thing. (As a matter of fact, it would be easier for me to put my computer screen image onto the television than vice versa.)

I have a few options. Instead of Windows XP, I have Windows MCE on my laptop. I could buy a special tuner card for my laptop, which would allow me to put the cable signal directly into the laptop, and from there I could tune (unscrambled) channels. I also have "Firewire" input to my laptop, so I can hook that up to my HD cable box, which happens to have a Firewire output port. I also have a DVD burner so I could burn the program onto DVD if it isn't copy protected, and then run the DVD on my laptop.

You probably have to get a graphic card that has an S-Video out, if you don't already have one.

I also have Windows media center and it seems pretty easy to hook up the computer to the TV:

Right now I actually have my computer connected wirelessly to the X-Box 360 downstairs. I have to be careful about what I download because my boyfriend can watch my video files and play my music at any time. :)

OY! I read the OP's message backwards. I thought the OP was trying to route video from the television to the computer, not the other way around. Routing video from the computer to the television is actually a lot easier, but still not clear-cut. You still need compatible ports, as Lora indicates. Luckily, many of the newest televisions come with ports compatible with video ports on many of the newest computers, either Firewire, DVI or HDMI.

A lot does have to do with your TV. We just bought a new TV a few weeks ago. This TV has a memory card slot imbedded in it. We can take our memory card from our digital camera to display directly on our TV.

But I know there is a way to get things from PC to TV. We've attempted it before.

I have a multy media video card ( ATI all in wonder )in my pc it has a rf in ( cable ) and audio & Video in & out I can youse this to watch TV on my computer and use my tv as a computer monitor ( I used my pc to play DVD movies and watched them on my TV ) .realy good software came with the card .I dont think you can do this without a card .

alright I got the music and almost got the video. I don't have an S-video slot on my tv and i thought I did. So the guy at radio shack says I need to get a connector that will go from s-video to the regular plugs on my tv and that will do it. I'll head out there to check in a bit.

I am the technology coordinator for a school district and while it does depend on what kind of TV you have, most likely you will need something like an AverKey:

It will convert your PC signal so that your TV can read it. We use tons of these in our classrooms. They run roughly about $100 and you should be able to buy one at Radio Shack or somewhere similar.

Best of luck!
