viewing PM's need to download something?

I am being asked to install something to view pm's now. Why?

You shouldn't have to download anything to see new "Conversations." Note PMs (messages) are now called "Conversations" and if you have a new one just click on the Inbox next to your name.

It was an ad...ugh thank God I didn't act on it

Unfortunately, I saw the stupid ad front and center and thought it was part of the changes - because I actually did have a new PM to see. . . I clicked and downloaded so I hope I didn't put something dangerous on my computer

I'm glad I didn't download anything, it just didn't seem right. But the message is front and center and sure makes it seem like you have to in order to view private messages. Why??

P.S. Now I am seeing the message to download something to view new messages at the bottom of the screen.
